What expectations do youhave?
AbbreviationsUB = Universitetsbiblioteket
= University Library
Three main libraries on campus Breivika:
– KS-Library = Culture and Social
Sciences Library (Kultur og Samfunn)
– NH-Library = Science and Health Library
(Natur og Helse)
– PJ-Library = Psychology and Law
library (Psykologi og jus)
• As old as the university itself (Stortinget 1968)
• All disciplines covered
• The University Library is nowadays as geographically widespread as
UiT itself, with physical locations in Hammerfest, Alta, Narvik, Harstad,
Mellomveien (Dept. of Education), Folkeparken (Tromsø museum and
Dept. of Music and Drama), etc.
• Our physical locations originate from the need for students and faculty to
have physical books and journals to hand
• However…
– digital world > digital content
• Online (electronic) journals are prioritized since 1999
• E-books are prioritized since 2011
• Open Access promoted (Munin Conference, Septentrio Academic
Publishing, Publishing Fund, etc.)
What is the University Library (UB)?
The physical library
(KS-library)
• Printed books and journals
• Reference books
• Reading areas on all 3 levels

more than 30.000 e-journals and
more than 750.000 e-books. All in full text.
• The UB subscribes to Library PressDisplay, a full text
database containing more than 6000 newspapers from 100
countries in 60 languages.
• Norwegians newspapers: Atekst – Retriever
• Free access on campus and at the student homes.
Elsewhere: connect to the VPN (see UB’s homepage)
Interlibrary loansIf the library doesn’t have the document youneed:
– we will order it from another library(interlibrary loan)
– or you may ask the library to buy thebook (and reserve it in your name)
Where to search for
documents?
• Starting point: http://uit.no/ub
• Oria: Library search
(uit.oria.no) contains
information on books,
e-books, e-journals,
articles, theses etc.
Search tip 1
• Avoid general search words, like society, women or theory
unless you add more specific words to your search:
women and migration or
women and migration and education
• Use truncation mark *
wom* migra* educat*
Search tip 2
Combine search words with AND, OR or NOT
• prostitu* AND poverty*
• prostitu* OR trafficking* (synonym)
• prostitu* NOT wom* (omitting a term)
Search tip 3
• Phrase searcha phrase with a certain order, try quotation marks:
”martin luther king”
”contemporary postcolonial theory”
”fair trade coffee”

Search tip 4
