    ish universities and research institu-tions, as well as industry, offer excel-lent research, library and laboratoryfacilities for researchers and PhD stu-dents alike.

    This fact sheet aims to give you a gen-eral outline of the PhD opportunitiesavailable in Denmark. Prospective PhDstudents are often informed aboutpossible research positions throughtheir academic networks or by con-tacting potential research institutions/supervisors directly. You can find a listof universities, faculties or research in-

    stitutions at the end.

    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTSA Danish PhD-programme usually laststhree years. The general admissionrequirement is a Master-level degree,comparable to the Danish 2-year Mas-ters degree - the Candidatus degree.Some faculties also offer 4-year PhDpro-grammes for students who haveyet to complete a Masters degree.Admission also requires a positive as-sessment of your PhD project proposalfrom the institution at which you wish

    to do your research training.

    Furthermore, necessary funding for theentire programme needs to be in place.Funding may take the form of either ascholarship or the payment of tuition

    fees. Tuition fees normally cover su-pervision, training, office and labora-tory facilities, travel allowance andprinting of the dissertation.

    PROGRAMME REQUIREMENTSThe components of a PhD programmeare:

    an independent research projectunder guid-ance (the PhD project)Participation in research coursesand seminars corresponding tosix months of full-time study (30ECTS)

    Teaching and other kind of com-munication activities correspond-ing to three months of full-timework (15 ECTS)Mobility to ensure integrationin two or more active researchgroups and networks (mobilityabroad is given high priority)A PhD thesis (based on the PhDproject) and a public defence ofthe thesis

    PhD FellowshipsPhD fellowships are open to appli-cants who have a Candidatus degree(or the equivalent of a two year Dan-

    ish Masters degree) as well a minimumof 2 years of professional experience.These scholarships advertised by uni-versities, research institutions, busi-ness enterprises and by public andprivate foundations are awarded for aperiod of 6 months to 2 years.

    Industrial PhD FellowshipsIndustrial PhD fellowships are a unique,enterprise-oriented opportunity. Thepurpose of the Industrial PhD Fellow-ship Programmes is to pro-mote thepossibilities of technological and finan-cial development for Danish industry

    and trade. The programmes thereforealways relate to the needs of an enter-prise in the areas of research and de-velopment. The PhD project is imple-mented as an actual research projectcarried out by the Industrial PhD fellowin collaboration with a private enter-prise and a university. Industrial PhDFellowships usually have durations ofthree years.

    The programme is open for newly-edu-cated candidates as well as for youngprofessionals with an academic back-ground such as a technical/scientific

    degree, or a degree within in healthcare or social science.

    FUNDINGA Danish PhD programme can be fund-ed in a variety of ways:

    Independent PhD programmesMost universities and research institu-tions will let you enrol as an independ-ent PhD student provided the qualityof your PhD proposal is adequate, andits subject matter falls within the areaof interest of the available research su-pervisors. As an independent PhD stu-dent you are responsible for fundingyour own PhD studies (tuition fees, ac-

    commodation costs and living expens-es). In some cases however, universi-ties may offer full or partial tuition feewaivers. The tuition fees vary, but areusually between 10,000 and 16.000euros per year.

    PhD StudentshipsPhD studentships (sometimes alsocalled PhD scholarships or PhD fellow-ships) are three-year full time positionsadvertised by universities, research in-stitutions, business enterprises and bypublic and private foundations. In ad-dition to a workplace and free tuition,

    students will receive a monthly salary.In return, students on studentshipsusually have teaching obligations.

    Fellows are employed with a salarypaid by the enterprise for the durationof the Industrial PhD studies, and nor-mally divide their time equally between

    the university and the enterprise.

    residence permit allows you to stayin Denmark three years or more or canbe extended to three years. However,

    your family members must be able tosupport themselves and you must livetogether in Denmark.
