TONIGHT’S GAMEThe Flyers drop the puck on the 2013-14 season tonight as they welcome the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Wells Fargo Center. TheFlyers are coming off a 23-22-3 season in 2012-13 and a 1-5-1 record over the course of the 2013 preseason. This is the first game forthe Flyers as a member of the NHL’s new Metropolitan Division, and marks the fourth division in which the Flyers have played in their46 years of existence, joining the West Division, Patrick Division and Atlantic Division. This is the first game in an 11-game month ofOctober for the Flyers, and the first of seven home games. They’ll head out on a two-game trip this weekend to Montreal and Carolinabefore returning home next Tuesday to host Florida.  SEASON/HOME OPENERSThe Flyers are opening the season at home for the second year in a row and for the 29th time in their history. They opened at home inboth the 2003-04 and 2005-06 seasons, but the last time the team opened at home in consecutive years was when there were threeconsecutive openers at home from 1999-2000 to 2001-02.   The Flyers opened at home in 16 out of 17 years from 1973-74 to 1989-90. They come into tonight’s game with a record of 21-17-7 on opening night, 26-13-6 in home openers, and are 15-10-3 in seasonopeners played on their home ice.  This is just the second time the Flyers have played a season-opening game against Toronto. The only other time was the 1973-74opener, also played at home, when the Flyers won 2-0 at the Spectrum.   VS. Brennan, born in Willingboro, New Jersey, played for the Philadelphia Little Flyers (ATJHL) in 2005-06. Brennan wasassigned to the AHL Toronto Marlies after training camp.  FLYERS FINAL ROSTERThe Flyers established a final roster of 19 players and two goaltenders prior to the Monday night NHL roster deadline. As part of theirfinal transactions, the Flyers assigned D Bruno Gervais and C Adam Hall to AHL Adirondack. On Monday, the Flyers recalled Halland also signed D Hal Gill to a one-year contract. Gill had attended training camp with the Flyers on a professional tryout.  The Flyers’ opening night roster includes C Scott Laughton, the team’s 2011 first-round draft pick. Laughton also made the Flyers outof training camp last year and played five games before being returned to Oshawa of the OHL.  INJURY UPDATE (with last game date)D Chris Pronger is on injured reserve, while D Marc-Andre Bourdon is an injured non-roster player.  RW Jakub Voracek is expectedto return tonight from a lower-body injury sustained in the preseason.  Meanwhile, Andrej Meszaros, Braydon Coburn, Max Talbot,Nicklas Grossmann, Zac Rinaldo, and Kimmo Timonen have all recovered from injuries that ended their seasons early lastyear. The Flyers lost a total of 264 man-games to injury last season.  MAN-GAMES LOST –LAST FOUR SEASONS2012-13: 264 (48-game season)2011-12: 4402010-11: 2402009-10: 205 NOTES OF THE NIGHT With the start of the season, Peter Laviolette will become just the second coach in Flyers history to coach a game in five differentseasons. Fred Shero coached the Flyers for 554 regular season games over seven full seasons, and only Shero and Mike Keenan,who coached the Flyers for 320 games over four full seasons, have been behind the bench for more games. No other head coachbesides Shero has been a part of five different Flyers seasons. Laviolette was hired on December 4, 2009 and starts the season with arecord of 145-95-29 in 269 games coached.  The Flyers held their training camp at the Wells Fargo Center this season for the first time, while their practice rink, The Virtua CenterFlyers Skate Zone in Voorhees, NJ, underwent renovations. The Flyers moved their camp to the National Olympic Training Center inLake Placid, NY for four days.  The Flyers posted a record of 1-6-1 in seven preseason games. Their preseason slate included their annual game at BudweiserGardens in London, Ontario, played this year against the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-3 shootout loss.  The next night, the Flyers playedwhat is believed to be the first split-squad set of games in team history when half the club won at Toronto 3-2 in a shootout while theother half dropped a 4-3 shootout decision at home vs. Washington. The Flyers also played the Capitals a second time to close out thepreseason and in between played the New Jersey Devils twice and the New York Rangers once.

The Flyers scored just 15 goals over their seven preseason games; those 15 goals were scored by 15 different players. The penalty killwas very solid during the preseason, allowing just three goals in 30 shorthanded situations (90 percent). The power play had the samenumbers but the other way around, only scoring three goals in 30 opportunities (10 percent).  The Flyers will enjoy seven home games over the course of October, beginning tonight, and will go on the road for just fourcontests. The first two come this weekend, when the Flyers will play back-to-back road games at Montreal on Saturday and at Carolinaon Sunday. The Flyers will have to play the two games just 22 hours apart, as the Sunday game at Carolina starts at 5pm. There is oneother back-to-back set on the calendar for October when the team hosts Phoenix on Friday, October 11 before going to Detroit thefollowing night. The final road game of the month is an up-and-back to Long Island to take on the New York Islanders.  The Flyers play their first game tonight as a member of the new Metropolitan Division. It is the fourth division in which the Flyers haveplayed, following the West Division, Patrick Division and Atlantic Division. All of the Flyers’ foes from their last division remain in thisnew group. After a 14-season hiatus, the Flyers will once again be a division rival of the Washington Capitals, who battled the Flyers inthe same division for 19 years –first in the old Patrick Division for 14 seasons from 1979-1993, and then in the Atlantic Division for fiveseasons from 1994-98. For the first time, the Flyers are divisional foes with the Carolina Hurricanes and the Columbus BlueJackets. The Flyers have only played 11 games against Columbus since the franchise joined the NHL in 2000.

Peter Laviolette enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Flyers.  He was named the 17th head coach in Flyers history on Dec. 4, 2009.   Laviolette has posted a regular season record of 145-95-29 as of the start of the 2013-14 season, including back-to-back 47-win seasons in2011-12 and 2010-11 –the most wins the Flyers have had in a two-season period since 1985-87. He led the Flyers to the second round of theplayoffs or further in three consecutive seasons (2009-10 through 2011-12), including a trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2010. Laviolette was selected to serve as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.  It will be Laviolette’s fourthOlympic Games and second as a coach.Prior to joining the Flyers, Laviolette spent parts of five seasons as head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes (2003-04 to 2008-09), where hecompiled a 167-122-34 record in 323 games and won the 2006 Stanley Cup.

PHANEUF SCORES TORONTO'S 19,000th GOAL Entering the 2013-14 season, the Toronto Maple Leafs franchise (including the St. Pats and Arenas) had scored 18,998 goals in 6,168games since the team was founded in 1917. On October 1, 2013 against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre, Captain Dion Phaneufscored the 19,000th goal in franchise history with the Leafs second goal in a 4-3 win. The Toronto franchise has now compiled 2,698wins, just two shy of 2,700 all-time wins. Randy Carlyle, 57, was named the 28th Head Coach in Toronto Maple Leafs history on March 2, 2012. Carlyle became the 16th individual tohave both played for the Maple Leafs and then taken on the reins as the team’s coach. The Sudbury, Ontario native played 94 games for theBlue and White from 1976 to 1978, registering two goals and 16 assists. In Carlyle’s first season (2012-13) coaching the Leafs, the teamcompiled a record of 26-17-5, finished fifth in the Eastern Conference and gained a playoff berth. Carlyle, a former James Norris Trophy winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins, most recently spent seven seasons as the Anaheim Ducks’ headcoach.
