(PHILCAMSAT) was cited as Highly Commended during the Safety at Sea (SAS) Awards held last September 13, 2017 at the London International Shipping Week 2017. The Bosun’s Role & Responsibility Evaluation and Enhancement Program (BOSREEP), nominated for Best Crew Development and Training Programme, was specially designed by PHILCAMSAT to provide knowledge, skills and an understanding of leadership and teamwork at the Support Level. The program underscores competent leadership and effective teamwork as critical elements needed to satisfactorily perform support level duties on board, taking into consideration the individual differences arising from a mix of nationalities. Also among the night’s nominees was Capt. Rolando A. Sorongon, PTC Bayaning Marino Awardee at the 2017 Seafarer Awards, who was shortlisted for Master of the Year. As Master of Ugland Marine Management’s MV Fermita, Capt. Sorongan led his team in rescuing an Indonesian fishing boat off the coast of Indonesia last April 24, 2017. The heroic efforts of Capt. Sorongan and his team saved the lives of three fishermen. As part of the London International Shipping Week 2017, the Safety at Sea awards brought together key stakeholders of the global maritime industry - from ship masters and crew to ship owners and ship managers, as well as companies that support safe and efficient ship operations through training and technology. PTC Celebrates National Maritime Week 2017 In celebration of this year’s National Maritime Week, PTC’s Family and Crew Relations organized a series of activities honoring the hard work and sacrifices of all Global Maritime Professionals (GMPs) in bridging us to the world and delivering our needs. National Maritime Week is celebrated by virtue of Proclamation No. 1094, consolidating the celebration of the National Seafarers Day (NSD), National Maritime Day (NMD) and the National Maritime Week (NMW). This year’s festivities are anchored on the 2017 World Maritime Day theme “Connecting Ships, Ports and People,” which focuses on the many diverse factors involved in shipping and logistics. From September 25 to 29, 2017, photos showcasing how PTC GMPs connect ships, ports and people through the work that they do were exhibited at the lobby of First Maritime Place. GMPs were also treated to a weeklong fair featuring various booths from partner sponsors such as First Maritime Credit Corp., Constellation Travels Inc., PhilAm Life, SMART, EastWest HealthCare, RCBC and San Antonio Skills Development Center. PhilHealth and Pag- IBIG Helpdesks were available to accept membership applications, issue IDs and MDRs, and answer member inquiries. On September 27, GMPs and their families were given pointers on financial literacy at the “Balik Bayani OFW Talk” by Philam Life. The following day, the “Libreng Sakay for PTC GMPs” provided free shuttle transfers from First Maritime Place to the Buendia LRT Station. The week was capped off with a General Assembly for GMPs & Allottees where attendees received the latest updates from their PTC Family and learned advanced investment concepts on retirement from AXA Philippines. Project Balanghay Students Now Certified PTC GMPsTwo Project Balanghay students from Capitol University in Cagayan de Oro are now official PTC Global Maritime Professionals after successfully passing the application process for ratings last August. Cadets Jilgo Minguez and Cristian Edol, who graduated from the Maritime Senior High School Program earlier this year, are set to join Grindrod Shipping as Ordinary Seamen (OS). Other graduates of the program are also currently being interviewed by various PTC principals. Meanwhile, a batch of Balanghay students from the Muntinlupa National High School are presently undergoing their shipboard training with Archipelago Philippine Ferries Corp. after having completed a Crowd and Crisis Management course at PHILCAMSAT last August 30.

PTC CMET to Offer BS Marine Engineering Bridging ProgramIn response to the anticipated demand for engine officers, the Malayan Colleges of Laguna’s Mapúa-PTC College of Maritime Education and Training (CMET) is proud to announce that the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has approved the CMET Bridging Program for its BS Marine Engineering track.

Through the Bridging Program, graduates of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Electronics Communications Engineering can now pursue BS Marine Engineering (BS MarE) studies, thus addressing the increasing global demand for competent engineers onboard. By retrofitting land-based engineering programs to sea-based application, CMET hopes to produce more well-rounded Marine Engineers as BSME, BSEE and BSECE graduates possess competencies in design and development; production and operations; and electronics, instrumentation and automation; which complement the skills required for Ship Operations. The Bridging Program is expected to be implemented by 2018.

PTC Employees Volunteer for Servathon 2017PTC employees joined over 1,000 volunteers at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) last September 23 for the annual service marathon called Servathon.

Organized by Hands on Manila Foundation with the theme “Mobilizing Manila for Hope in Mindanao,” this year’s Servathon aimed to help provide basic necessities for the communities in Mindanao, particularly for victims of the Marawi siege currently in evacuation centers.

The volunteers were divided into nine groups consisting of 30 members each and were tasked to assemble different kits composed of soap and mobile learning games. The PTC contingent in particular was assigned to make bottled mosquito repellant to be included in sleeping kits for distribution to families in Marawi.

At the end of the program, the kits were turned over to the International Care Ministries (ICM) and the Community and Family Services International (CFSI) for immediate delivery to Mindanao.

Joining the Fight Against Hepatitis The Department of Health estimates that as much as 16% of Filipino adults suffer from chronic hepatitis B infection while approximately 1% of the estimated 100 million Filipinos have chronic hepatitis C. With these statistics in mind, the company’s Human Resources Department organized a seminar on Hepatitis, conducted by Dra. Faith Barsaga, Occupational Health Physician of Medicard, last August 31, 2017 at the Legaspi Room of First Maritime Place. As part of the continuing PTC Health & Wellness Lecture Series 2017, the seminar provided the employees and GMPs who attended the talk with an overview of the disease, as well as its causes, symptoms, treatment and prevention.

US Embassy NIV Officers Visit PTCPTC welcomed Mr. Stephen C. Heinemeier, Consular Officer of the Embassy of the United States, last September 6 together with members of the Embassy’s Nonimmigrant Visa (NIV) Unit. Mr. Heinemeier and his team met with executives of the PTC Group to gain a better understanding of the nuances of crew management in relation to a crew member’s travel and visa requirements.

Enhanced TEAM Portal Launched A new and enhanced PTC TEAM (Total Employee Access Management) Portal was launched to members of the PTC Group last September 13, 2017. Aside from providing easier access to necessary web-based work management systems, productivity tools and company information, the site also serves as a platform to educate employees on important topics relevant to the organization such as cyber security, business continuity, 5s and much more. Furthermore, TEAM Portal also seeks to provide an avenue for members of the PTC group to get to know more about their fellow employees, and be updated on the latest developments about the company and the communities that PTC serves.

PTC Holds Data Privacy and Governance WorkshopAligned with the recent move to set up Business Continuity Teams across the PTC Group, PTC is set to embark on the creation of a Data Governance Office (DGO) tasked with the overall management of the availability, usability, integrity, and security of data entrusted to the organization by its stakeholders. In preparation for this, the company’s Information Communications Technology (ICT) Department conducted a Data Privacy and Governance Workshop last August 31 at the Legaspi Room of First Maritime Place. In attendance were the nominated Data Trustees/Owners, Stewards and Custodians of various PTC Group affiliates and business units who will form the core of the PTC Data Protection Team. With the Philippine Data Protection Act of 2012 as its guide, the DGO will conduct a series of activities involving the conduct of a baseline Privacy Impact Assessment (PIA); formulating a privacy management program; ensuring compliance with DPA’s requirements to manage personal and third party risks and possible data breaches; running mandatory personnel training; and conducting PIAs for new and existing programs, systems, processes and projects.

John T. Essberger and Transocean Shipmanagement SSHEQ ConferenceJohn T. Essberger and Transocean Shipmanagement (TOS) held their Safety, Security, Health, Environment and Quality (SSHEQ) Seminar for their officers and crew from September 18 to 22, 2017 at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Manila. The conference was opened by Capt. Lennart Van Der Net, TOS Crew Operations Manager and was followed by sessions on Workplace Cultural Diversity, Safety Culture Development & Policies, Safe Cargo Operations, Occupational Health, ISO 14001 and Cyber Security among others. A health and wellness seminar was also conducted for the wives of TOS officers and crew on September 22. The last day of the conference was capped with a memorable Fellowship Night where Capt. Josef Stingl, TOS Managing Director, handed out service awards to longstanding TOS crewmembers.

ACM Homes Holds Occupational Safety and Health TrainingACM Homes organized a training on Construction Occupational Safety and Health for all its engineers and technical staff. The training was conducted by Safeways Consultancy and Safety Training for four consecutive Saturdays, from August 12 through September 2, 2017. The training program is in compliance with the mandated laws and standards of Occupational Safety and Health pursuant to the Philippine Labor Code of the Philippines and Department of Labor and Employment Order No.13 series of 1998.

PTC Bloodletting Activity PTC employees and GMPs rolled up their sleeves and served as heroes to thousands of their fellow Filipinos as they volunteered to be blood donors during the PTC Bloodletting Activity held last September 20 at the Ground Floor of First Maritime Place. A total of 65 individuals volunteered to take part in the activity with 35 volunteers being given the green light as blood donors. The blood donated by the PTC volunteers will help augment the 2,500 to 3,000 blood units needed by the Philippine Red Cross every day to meet the blood demand in the country.
