PHILIPPINES Hope & Health Aid RAWCS Project # 117/2010-11 Project of Rotary Club of Penrith ULTRASOUND DONATION & TRAINING October 21, 2013 at Lucena City, Quezon Province Philippines was a challenging but blessed day for 22 health practitioners in this region as they went through a rigorous training on the use of Ultrasound Machine in Focused Assessment Sonography in Trauma (FAST) designed to assist medical officers and nursing staff in remote areas of the province make bedside diagnosis where resources are limited. At end of day training, 10 health facilities went home with brand new equipment donated by DAK foundation throught RAWCS. (Read more on page 2) PHILIPPINES DISASTER RESPONSE November 8, 2013 was doomsday for the Philippines when Typhoon Haiyan, the strongest typhoon on record, hit parts of the country leaving nothing but devastation. RAWCS made its presence felt with various projects including sending container-load of relief goods, establishing potable water supply and rounding up funds to support local rotary clubs on the ground, which provide emergency relief goods, shelter and medical aid. RAWCS hand in hand with the French Disaster

Response Team in the Philippines

Donating Water Potabilization Unit Nov 2013 at Quinapondan Island

With logistic air transport support from the US Navy, the French Disaster Response Team along with RAWCS volunteer was able to reach this remote island to provide much-needed solution to lack of water after typhoon Haiyan struck the area.

Donating Medical Supplies Nov 2013 at Brgy San Joaquin Palo Leyte

Medical supplies were donated to Midwife Joy Abuyabor of Seventh Angel Family Health Care & Maternity for use in the interm health/maternity center that she manages

Roving Medical Missions November 2013 – French Disaster Team along with RAWCS Volunteer Dr Grace Maano went about various health centers in the disaster area providing free consultations, wound treatment, and medications.

Solar powered lights & battery charger Barugo Health Center, in Barugo town in Leyte had continually provided medical services using flashlights and candles after Typhoon Haiyan cut all power supplies hence they were very excited to receive this much-needed solar powered lights with solar battery chargers from benefactors through RAWCS.

The Benefits of having an Ultrasound

Machine in a Developing Country October 2013 at Candelaria, Quezon Province Philippines – the night after attending training, Dr Grace Santiago and her assistant Medical Officer was onduty… a lady with threatening miscarriage came to Emergency Department at such an unholy hour…. As they have just learned how to use the scanning machine, the machine was put to good use saving lives!

Oct 21, 2013: In coordination with Rotary Club of Lucena through PP Ed Munoz, Philippine Society of Ultrasound in Surgery through Dr Eric Talens and Quezon Integrated Provincial Health Office through the Provincial Health Director Dr Agripino Tullas, a training on FAST Ultrasound was successfully conducted at Quezon Medical Center in Lucena attended by 11 doctors and 11 nursing/radiology staff . At the end of the one-day intensive training session, 10 health facilities each received a brand new Ultrasound Machine

Post Typhoon Haiyan in November, RTR Hospital in Tacloban received various brand new medical equipment for their charity ward serving the constituents in the disaster-stricken city also from DAK foundation through RAWCS.

Post Disaster Restoration Programs in the Philippines In coordination with PP Maita Manglapus of Rotary Club of Mactan, restoration efforts in the Philippines continue: -reconstruction of Barugo Rural Health in Leyte -rebuilding of Taytayan Integrated School in Bogo, Northern Cebu and Astorga Elem School at Tunga Leyte -distribution of 200 boxes “classroom in a box” containing basic tools for teachers in public school areas -provision of 3500 school books and 1000 school packs for kids in Samar and Leyte Province

RAWCS Philippines Disaster response accomplishment Nov 13-20, 2014 along with French Disaster Team: 4 cities and 5 clinics visited 834 victims treated in Leyte 2 units of purification commissioning ( Quinapondan and Barugo ) 6 solar batteries donated to Barugo Leyte 8 tents, sleeping bags , 3 trunks filled with medicines, one box of food offered at the RTR hospital in Leyte Nov 15 up to present in coordination with Rotary Club of Mactan: $5,000 aud from RC Hall supported AFP medical center with medicines, equipment,generator $25,000 aud from DAK Foundation bought relief goods, medical supplies, equipment, generator, tents to Barugo, Tunga, CArigara, San Joaquin Palo, EVRMC and RTR Hospitals in Leyte $1,500 funding support and several boxes of relief goods sent from Australia from Care and Share Army Australia (CASA) sent to Barugo Leyte.
