The Philippines continues to lag behind its Asian neighbours when it comes to embracing cloud computing, the findings of new research suggest.

According to market research carried out by the Microsoft Technology Centre, while adoption of the technology has grown by around 400 per cent over the past year in countries such as Australia and Singapore, in the Philippines, such growth is a lot less impressive.

Indeed, despite the many benefits of shifting IT operations to the cloud, concerns about security, as well as lower-than-average connectivity speeds are still deterring many Philippine firms from making the step.

Speaking to national news site GMA News, one business leader confirmed that poor connectivity is one of the main reasons why he remains reluctant to move away from the current policy of holding all data and software solutions in-house.

Moreover, according to Eduardo Francisco, president of FINEX, businesses of all sizes remain wary that any data they do put up on the cloud could be vulnerable to hackers, even if such fears are ill-founded.

"Most applications used by corporations are still very company-centric. Security issues forbid them to bring out data from comfortable zones," he told the site.

He added, however, that such concerns are also present in neighbouring countries such as Thailand and Sri Lanka, with the emphasis now on cloud computing providers to demonstrate their security credentials and IT leaders to step out of their comfort zones and embrace evolving technology.

Other Asia-Pacific countries fare differently. In Australia, the specialist technology news website CMO has reported that Australians are leading the way in embracing new technology.

Citing the findings of research carried out by Rackspace, the website notes that, in addition to being open to the idea of wearing internet-connected 'smart glasses' such as those being pioneered by Google, Australians are far more likely than people elsewhere in the world to embrace the cloud, with most keen to harness the benefits of technology in order to enjoy a better quality of life.
