Background

● The Philippines' aboriginal inhabitants arrived from the Asian mainland around 25,000 BC

● By the 14th century, extensive trade was being conducted with India, Indonesia, China, and

Japan.

Description of Rule ● Collaborated with the Nacionalista party

● In 1934 the U.S. Congress passed a legislation which provided a 10 year period of

transition for independence

● The Philippines Organic Act 1902 established legislature composed of a lower

house, the Philippine Assembly, which would be popularly elected, and an upper

house consisting of the Philippine Commission, which was to be appointed by the

president of the United States

● The act also provided for extending the United States Bill of Rights to Filipinos

● In addition it disestablished the Catholic Church as the state religion

● The US ruled from 1898 to 1935 and then again from 1936 to 1946

Key Individuals/Important Events

● During the annexation and war the Philippines was governed by its first president, Emilio Aguinaldo. He lived through it and until the Philippines finally gained independence.

● President Theodore Roosevelt was American president during the annexation. However, he granted political amnesty to the Filipinos.

● An additional key figure was Macario Sakay, who was a general in the Katipunan army, which was a liberal organization against their oppressors. Sakay became president in 1903 in the Republic of Katagalugan, an unrecognized state in the Philippines.

Impact of Colonialism

● Colonization of the Philippines led to an increased sense of patriotism among the natives, but temporarily withheld Philippine rule and sovereignty. The American effect, unlike the Spanish on the Philippines was rather positive: during years of colonization the country extremely modernized and gave it better chances of strong sovereignty after its independence in 1892. Prior to that spanish colonialism on the other hand impacted much of Philippine culture negatively and altered its language. Even though Tagalog maintains Filipino aspects Spanish dramatically influenced its development. As a result all in all, a language similar to Spanish is spoken and the nation is very modernized, but due to US leaving it, as become a struggle for becoming a first world.
