Exercise #5: Playing Time with the Melody in the R.F.
Step 1: Comping the melody with the right foot and the Philly Joe beat
Using all the guidelines from the previous exercise, try playing the melody

out or interfere with your ride cymbal beat, as the bass drum can easily over-
whelm the ride cymbal.
As well as playing the melody in the foot, also play a cross stick on beat
four of each measure. This is the famous Philly Joe Beat that he used to greateffect in Miless band, usually behind piano solos. Try to fit all this activity into
one solid, swinging groove. Also, watch out for the quarter note triplets on the
bridge, as well as the bar of 2 at the end of the form.
