relating the wisdom I’ve learned from some of the great philosophers of the past to my life in the present

What does Philosophy mean?Philosophy in the dictionary is defined as
the pursuit of wisdom and search for a
general understanding of values and
reality by chiefly speculative rather than
observational means.
To me philosophy means the study
of our behavior and it’s constant
questions about everything around
us including our existence, values,
society and religion. I think
Philosophy teaches a person how to
think, believe and understand more
deeply.
Rene descartes
I doubt, therefore I think; I think therefore I am
Method of doubt A process of finding out the truth.
It is concerned with eliminating everything that can possibly be doubted.
Descartes portrays a basket filled with apples, some which are good and
some that were rotten as in the bad ones. Instead of throwing them all away,
Descartes considers the best procedure and that was to empty the whole
basket and carefully inspect them one by one. The good apples were to be
Descartes true beliefs and the rotten ones were his false beliefs. The basket
itself was the mind, and the discarding of the apples was Descartes’s method
of doubt.
Method of doubt (continued)
Descartes method of doubt
leads to “Absolute
skepticism”
In which a person should
doubt that anything can be
known to include existence
and that things that do not
doubt can not exist.
ETHICS
We live in a world where we are constantly being categorized by our race and ethnicity
Aristotle who believed in the
“naturalistic ethical systems.”
viewed ethics differently from the
other philosophers.
There are so many things that we as
a society can do to get rid of these
ethical issues if not completely then
one step at a time. If we were to
replace negative thoughts with
thoughts of morality, compassion,
love, and respect. Then we would be
able to see less of these issues that
happen in our society today.
Ethics (contiued)
W
e study ethics in order to improve our lives
I
ts principal concern is the nature of human well-being.
Aristotle follows Socrates &
P
lato in taking the virtues to
be central to a well-lived life.
FEMINISM
FEMINISM Today the biggest issue in the United States is the
"ideal" body image for girls. If a women is slim she is
considered more beautiful and prettier.
Women are used as a sexual object on tv
commericials as a way of getting people to buy the
product.
Women are always left with the responsibility of the
children and the household chore. Some women in
some countries are not allowed to work or go to
school after the age of 18.
Because I am a women, I must make unusual effort to succeed. If I Fail, no one will say “she doesn’t have what it takes” They will say
“Women don’t have what it takes”. ~Clare Boothe Luce
Eastern Philosophy
Hinduism & Buddhism I like the ideas and teaching in buddhism, in how to live from
suffering. Being Hindu myself, I believe in my religion strongly,
in the reincarnation and praying to animals that are Gods. Like
Ganesh, who has a head of elephant.
Every religion has a special teaching, in which a person
learns something new about life, love and things in
general. Being a Hindu, I went to a catholic school for
twelve years of my life, learned the Christianity religion
and now I am learning about the Islamic religion, as my
significant other follows that religion. I am embracing
three religions, that I firmly believe and hold lot of respect
of.
