Overview

The SRHS Spirit Program consists of the following squads:

Varsity Cheer Squad

Junior Varsity Cheer Squad

Freshmen Cheer Squad

These squads will be chosen through a 4-day long tryout process. All squads are required to practice for the entire academic year and attend/support various sporting and school events throughout the academic year. SQUAD SIZE Cheer squad size may vary from year to year as determining conditions are continuously changing. ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS Student must have an overall UNWEIGHTED 2.0 GPA and 2.0 CITIZENSHIP at the end of the most recent grading period in order to participate in tryouts. Members accepted onto the squads must maintain the un-weighted 2.0 GPA and 2.0 Citizenship with no F’s or U’s on any following progress reports and semester grades. Failure to comply could result in probation and potential dismissal from the Spirit Program. HEALTH Cheerleading is a rigorous activity, which requires its participants to be in top physical and mental shape. Cheerleading is a performance-oriented activity and therefore full participation is expected. Students with serious health problems that are aggravated by exercise and/or which limit full participation for a substantial amount of time are highly recommended to reconsider participation. This policy has been enacted in order to protect both the potentially ill member as well as other squad members from injury. Ongoing injuries limiting participation will be assessed on an as-needed basis. All tryout participants are required to have a physical examination by his/her own physician prior to the start of tryouts. ****Please NOTE SIDELINE CHEER IS DIFFERENT THAN OUR COMPETITIVE CHEER, THEREFOR PHYSICAL DATES FOR SIDELINE IS PRIOR TO APRIL 1ST, COMPETITIVE MUST BE DATED AFTER June 10th)**** RISK Cheerleading incorporates acrobatic, tumbling, stunt, and precision movements that are very difficult. Moderate to severe injuries can occur in any activity involving motion at increased height or force. FINANCIAL CONCERNS Financial Information The Constitution of the State of California requires that we provide a public education to students free of charge. A student’s right to a free education is for all school/educational activities, whether curricular or extracurricular, and whether a student gets a grade for the activity or class. Subject to certain exceptions, a student’s right to a free public education means that we cannot require you or your students to purchase materials, supplies, equipment or uniforms for any school activity, nor can we require you or your student to pay security deposits for access, participation, materials, or equipment. We may require students to attend a fundraising event; however, if they are unable to raise funds for the event, this will not prevent them from participating in an educational activity. Students may be held responsible for paying the cost of school uniforms and equipment not returned and/or damaged. Scripps Ranch High School provides students the option of working to clear debts in lieu of

payment. For more information visit www.sandi.net/staff/studentfees. The SRHS Cheer squads rely on fundraising in order to continue and support an active program. We value the support of all of our SRHS Cheerleaders, their families, and the Scripps Ranch Community. TIME COMMITMENT Please be aware that dedication from each team member is necessary in order to have a successful practice, performance, game and year! The team cannot function properly without every member present. Please be aware of this when planning family events. Commitment includes practice hours, game hours, performance/appearance/promotion hours, community service, as well as fundraiser hours. The amount of time commitment each member dedicates to the squad will benefit her position on the team. The entire time commitment required from each member is one (1) full year. If you cannot commit to this, please reconsider participation.

Summer Practice: Practices generally run 3 times per week during the summer months

Summer Camp: Participation in cheer camp is voluntary. Camp takes place at a college campus for 3 - 4 days and provides the opportunity to learn skills and bond with other cheerleaders in a positive environment. The 2019 Summer Camp dates are: August 2nd to the 5th. The cost for camp will be $459 per participant, but no cheerleader will be denied participation because of lack of sufficient funds nor will not attending camp affect the position or status on the team. (at camp this year we will begin to learn our homecoming routine)

Football and Basketball Season: Football games are held every week (excluding one bye game) during September through November. Basketball games are generally Tuesday and Friday evenings. Members travel away for games as well. Members are also required to participate in post-season playoff games. * We have expanded to include many other ie; Volleyball, H2o Polo, Soccer, and any other sports in season…ultimately our GOAL is to promote ALL sports here at SRHS.

Fundraising Events: Fundraisers help to fund additional gear, senior gifts, banquet and other team related activities. Generally, members are encouraged to participate in fundraising events but they are not mandated to participate.

Promotional Events: Many times, the SRHS spirit squad is requested to make appearances throughout the community to help show their support. These events are based on the availability of the squad members.

OUTSIDE SPIRIT SQUAD COMMITMENTS ***Outside cheer commitments should not conflict with any members’ cheerleading duties.*** Please consult the team calendar BEFORE making personal appointments. Remember, the more the member puts into the squad, the more they will get out. Being a part of this program means making the spirit squad a priority behind FAMILY commitments and their academics. Participation in other commitments such as recreational/competitive teams or other sports cannot conflict with spirit squad commitments.
