Working to Keep You Cool

Page 2: Phoenix Arizona Cool Roof Council Presentation

What is the Arizona Cool Roof Council? The Arizona Cool Roof Council (ACRC) is a non-profit independent

organization that promotes the use of cool roofing materials in new and renovated roof systems. We are an educational resource for

roof designers, installers, and building owners.

We are not affiliated with nor do we promote any particular product or manufacturer other than those categorized by the EPA as “Energy Star” rated.

Our goalTo educate in the design of roofing systems, to reduce energy

consumption, and meet the guidelines set forth by Department of Energy, Environmental Protection Agency and Energy Star.

What is a Cool Roof ?A cool roof may be defined differently by different codes or programs, in simple terms, a cool roof reflects and emits the sun's heat back to the sky instead of transferring it to the building below. "Coolness" is measured by two properties, solar reflectance and thermal emittance. Both properties are measured from 0 to 1 and the higher the value, the "cooler" the roof. (www.crrc.org)

Solar ReflectanceSolar ReflectanceThe amount of solar radiation that is reflected away from a surface--ranging from Ultra-Violet to near Infrared. (www.crrc.org)

EmissivityEmissivityThe amount of absorbed energy, which is no longer classified as energy but is characterized by temperature (heat), that is radiated away from the surface. (www.crrc.org)

SRI ValueSRI Value(ASTM Standard E 1980)(ASTM Standard E 1980)

The combined value of reflectivity and emissivity and is a measure of the roof’s ability to reject solar heat, as shown by a small temperature rise

Materials that are very cool can achieve an SRI value greater than 100 and hot materials can have a negative number.

The highest SRI values are the coolest and most effective energy efficient roofing materials
