  • Kaikoura – Coast Road Rebuild (2016 – 2018) After the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake Heli Glenorchy played a major role in the Coast Road rebuild. The huge job in front of the NCTIR team involved helicopters sluicing the many massive slips daily, removing rocks, vegetation and loose dirt. The operation was carried out by many helicopters with underslung buckets. Additionally, for NCTIR we spent hours lifting equipment and personnel to steep remote sites as well as laying 300ft mesh with a hundred-foot long line, over-lapping this by 4 to 5 inches as it was placed. With our AS350 B3 helicopters Heli Glenorchy and our pilots moved approximately 25 million litres of water, with Kaikoura based pilot Russ Harris dropping 15 million litres alone. We were immensely proud to be involved in an operation such as this. After nearly two years in Kaikoura; Heli Glenorchy remained the one of the stalwarts of the NCTIR helicopter operation and finished up late in 2018.

Coronet Peak / Remarkables Ski Field – New Chair Lift Builds (2019 - 2020)

2019-20 has seen the installation of new chairlifts at Coronet Peak and Remarkables Ski Fields. Heli Glenorchy has been heavily involved with tower dis-assembly and concreting with the use of our concrete buckets under-slung on hundred-foot long lines. Each load weighs in at around 1150kg with the pilots running approximately 2 to 4 minute turn arounds from truck to placement. Timing and efficiency has been key in this operation when working with concrete delivery.

    Skyline / Heads Up Access – Stabilisation Work (2019 - 2020)

Heli Glenorchy is working with Skyline and Heads Up Access doing the stabilisation and rockfall fencing work in Queenstown. Due to this location being directly adjacent to an area heavily used by visitors, the work is carried out in the early morning. The terrain and vegetation on site demands the use of up to 200 foot long lines and extreme precision to lower drill and stabilization equipment into necessary sites.

  • Department of Conservation Since beginning our operations in 2015 we have become an ‘Approved Department of Conservation Operator’ and ‘Approved Contractor’. We are also approved on the DOC National Helicopter Panel. We regularly carry out conservation work with DOC staff including the major track re-supply events at the beginning and end of each track season. This includes the removal and installation of major bridges on several of the well-known walking tracks. Other work involves pest control, trapping and trap transportation, personnel movements and assisting with avalanche risk assessments. Heli Glenorchy has and continues to respond with the Department in emergency situations such as urgent people movement and retrieval type jobs.

Fire Fighting Heli Glenorchy has been FENZ audited, approved and boasts some of the best fire-fighting equipment in the country. Our B3 Squirrel helicopters have the capacity to carry 1200 litres of water per load and our AS355 has a front passenger seat transmit capabilities. We are one of only two companies in New Zealand with under-belly Simplex Fire-Bombing tanks available. These tanks have the capacity to carry 1200 litres of water, are foam injected and have the ability to drop using one or two doors. The tanks omit the use of the long line so are a perfect option over built up/residential areas. Travel time from the water source is faster and dumping is precise and efficient. The use of the tanks allows us to conduct crew transfers without having to remove buckets or long-lines. Additional to these we operate Cloudburst fire buckets. These buckets are collapsible and can be ferried internally to site. The pilot has the ability to control the water spread when dumping as well as the ability to spot dump. The Cloudburst buckets are fitted with foam injector units. Heli Glenorchy pilots, ground crew and operational staff are qualified in basic fire ground training and we have two qualified lead pilots.
