Wishing you all the Hope,
Peace, Joy, and Love of
Christmas
Dear First Baptist Church Family,
Becky and I want to express our sincerest appreciation for my thirty-year anniversary celebration
at our church. The entire day of December 11 was a blessing to us and deeply appreciated by our
family and me. Thank you Roger Phillips and the Personnel Committee for your kind words
during the morning service. The plaque presented is stunning (and quite heavy!) and will serve to
forever remind us of this special day. I am grateful to Carol Hydrick and the Music Committee for
their hard work in organizing such a meaningful day. Gwen Mitchell and many who serve on the
Church Fellowship Committee provided a beautiful reception, which Betty Walker would have
certainly been proud of! The remembrances contained in the Contact and put together by Stacey
Grimm were humbling and deeply appreciated. There are so many others who worked together to
make it a joyous day of celebration. Many people at FBC have been supportive and active in our
ministry since we came thirty years ago; there is no way to adequately repay our appreciation.
At the reception a basket was filled with cards for us. We sat down and opened cards for two
hours and read every one, remembering with gratitude those who shared memories, thanks, bless-
ings, and gifts. We were really overwhelmed with joy and thankfulness. Some were from those
who are relatively new to First Baptist, and some were from friends who have walked alongside us
since we came to Burlington in 1986. All of these expressions of love and encouragement said a lot
about the hearts of the people of First Baptist. You are loving, patient, encouraging, dedicated and
forgiving! Ministers are not perfect and you have been willing to overlook the flaws and see the
positive; for that we say thank you.
Thirty years of ministry at one church can only happen with the love and support of a wonderful
spouse. Becky's support of my ministry and her friendship to you is significant. Her ministry
through children's choirs, handbells, adult choir, hospitality, teaching young adults and much
more, while all along the journey raising a great family , AND running a successful decorating
business, is quite remarkable. I am deeply grateful for all she has given to First Baptist and to me.
I was called by God clearly to the music ministry in 1981. I made a commitment to follow the Holy
Spirit in this calling to the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, and my ministry goal was to
serve the local church in music ministry. Bill Wheeler, chair of the search committee, and the
committee members had no idea that my service would last this long! We feel so blessed to be able
to serve Christ and fulfill this calling at First Baptist Burlington. THANK YOU for your partner-
ship in ministry over thirty years!
I am really excited about the opportunities ahead for the new year and look forward to the "gospel
opportunities" we will have together.
Merry Christ-mas and Happy Holidays to each of you, our dear “Church Family”!
Sincerely,
Joel Marshall
Minister of Music & Worship

meals to benefit this mission trip. Join us in the Fellowship Hall, after worship, on January 22. A meal will be
provided. Donations are welcome. Reservations are not needed.
All donations will go towards this trip...the more money received the more we can accomplish when we go...think
supplies for Back Yard Bible Study, Bibles, building materials, bunk beds, shoes and the like. Hope to see you
there!

2016 Committee Chairs
In an effort to help our committees work as
efficiently as possible, we are asking each of
our current 2016 committee chairs to call a
meeting of the 2017 members of your com-
mittee, to elect officers for the coming year,
and to select a regular meeting time for 2017.
These meetings are replacing the November
Committee Conference.
Please contact the church office at 336-226-
2433 or [email protected] with
the date of your meeting. Current, 2016, Com-
mittee Chairs are also responsible for turning in
the names of the 2017 officers and the 2017
meeting times. This information should be giv-
en to the church office no later than January 8,
2017.
FBC 2017 Resource Guides will be available in
the church office on Sunday, January 15. These
guides are available to all church members and
can be especially helpful to committee mem-
bers.
We appreciate all our committees for the work
they have done in 2016. Thank you to all those
who have agreed to serve in 2017. We look
forward to serving with you!
