MOMENT FOR REFLECTIONWhen has the promise of Easter morning ever been more necessary that this morning? We are a beleaguered people: mindful of much suffering and death around us, weary with isolation and physical separation, uncertain of how long the oppression of pandemic illness will hold us in its grip. We are indeed a beleaguered people. And so perhaps, this Easter morning we can more readily see ourselves in the great story. For surely the first disciples of Jesus were also beleaguered folk: eye-witnesses to the death and destruction of Jesus; already haunted by shame and guilt and fear brought on by their own actions of betrayal, denial and abandonment, uncertain as the sun rose, how long the oppression of Rome and its violence would hold them in its icy grip. Yes. This morning, perhaps for the first time, we truly know them, what they might have been feeling, how desperate they must have been for Good News, and how utterly surprised they were to have been given it. Hold on, friends! Good News is coming. Messengers and angels, stones rolled away and tombs empty, the one who had died now is risen, and for us in our confusion and despair, comes even to us. Hear again, as if for the first time, the great Good News of our faith: Christ has died, Christ has risen, Christ will come again!

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Paul ShupeJohn 20:1-18

Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.

But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him,

“Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew, “Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples,

“I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.

A TIME OF SILENT PRAYER

THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.

GATHERING WORDS (responsively)One: We gather now at the table of Christ, seeking mercy, forgiveness, joy and peace. We remember that this is his table, and so we say, Come from the north and come from the south, come from the east and come from the west. Come regardless of age or race or sex or creed or orientation or identity. Come not because you must, but because you may.

Many: Come because it is our Lord’s table, and he bids us come.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION (responsively)

One: We remember that on the night He was betrayed, Jesus sat at table with His disciples, and when they had eaten, He took the bread, and He blessed it and broke it, and He gave it to them saying,

Many: “Take and eat. This is my body, broken for you. Eat of this bread as often as you will, and remember me.”

One: After they had shared the bread, he took a cup, and he blessed it, and he gave thanks to God, and he poured it out for them and said,

Many: “This is the cup of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sin. Whenever you drink of it, remember me.”

One: These are the gifts of God...

Many: ...for the people of God. Come, let us share the feast!

AppeAl for Unopened Boxed n95 MAsks for HeAltHcAre Workers

There is an urgent appeal from Boston area hospitals and Mayor Walsh for unopened boxes of N95 masks desperately needed by health care workers as they care for patients with COVID-19. I have been asked by Hancock folks who are health care providers in Boston hospitals to help with a local appeal for this PPE [Personal Protection Equipment]. There is a similar

drive in the Wellesley area.

Along with unopened boxes of N95 masks, commercial boxes of gloves or masks are also needed. Mayor Walsh’s appeal was on WHDH this week, reaching out particularly to building sites, construction sites, and anyone who uses protective gear; also singling out asbestos abatement and demolition companies.

If you have boxed N95 masks or other PPE or know of sources for such, please contact Daryl Battin (email: [email protected] or text 781-789-3763) or Amy Swanson ([email protected]) who have offered to collect these items (will pick up). Once collected, all items will be taken to an MGH doctor who will make sure collected PPE is (1) verified to be functioning at the standards required for health care workers, and then 2) distributed to hospitals with the most need (which can vary). This urgent appeal being done to protect front line health care workers as they care for patients with COVID-19. Your help most invaluable - thank you so very much!

HAncock conversAtions

We miss seeing each other – the informal chats we used to have after worship, or before committee meetings, or in myriad other ways. But thankfully we have tools to fight the impact of our physical isolation. This week we’re trying a new one: Hancock Conversations, a series of offerings that give us the opportunity to connect over topics of mutual interest.

These are one-hour conversations conducted through Zoom, the video/audio teleconferencing program that’s become very popular and is easy to use. In each case a Hancock member has agreed to host the conversation, but they don’t profess to be an expert, just someone who’s interested in talking with others about the topic involved.

So take a look at the initial set of offerings below, and if one interests you, please email [email protected] to sign up. We’ll confirm your registration and send you Zoom instructions. And if you need a Zoom tutorial, let us know.

If this works, we’d like to keep doing this for as long as we’re apart. So please consider hosting a conversation! Email us at [email protected] with your ideas and questions. What’s most important right now is that we just keep talking and connecting. Initial offerings:

"Small Talk." Light conversation. Small connections. No preparation needed. Drop in to say Hi to old friends and meet new ones. Share an experience, a thought, a wish, a deed. Who else has the same interest, cause or question? Where have you found a moment of joy or a burst of energy? Join in for all or a part of the conversation. Share your smile. Tuesday April 14, 4-5pm. Hosted by Barbara Shafer. Limit 20.

Favorite Movies. If you could take no more than five movie DVD’s with you on a long space journey or to a desert island, which would you choose? We’ll each share our choices and the reasons why. Thursday, April 16, 4-5 pm. Hosted by Charlie Wyman. Limit 10.

Introduction to Qigong. Experience the benefits of qigong. This is a mind-body-spirit practice that improves one's mental and physical health by integrating posture, movement, breathing technique, self-massage, sound, and focused intent. It's great for you at any time - but especially during a pandemic! No equipment necessary - just comfortable clothing and a chair for the sitting exercises. Saturday, April 18, 10-11 am. Hosted by Beth Schutt. Limit 10.

Favorite Cookbooks. What are your favorite cookbooks? Which ones do you go to time and again, and why? Share what you like about them and learn about others you might not know. Saturday, April 18, 11 am – noon. Hosted by Sally Wyman. Limit 10.

We welcome all who seek to know God.

We believe that, although we are many members, we are one body in Christ.

We have been called as well as challenged by God to respect and reconcile our differences.

We recognize and love each individual as a child of God.

We welcome, respect, support, and lovingly encourage people of every race, ethnicity, creed, class, gender, sexual orientation, age, and physical and mental

ability to join us on our journey of faith.

The faith journey indeed calls Hancock Members not to be silent in the face of prejudice, injustice, and exclusion, but to express our faith, in word and deed,

for justice and inclusiveness for all humanity.

As Paul wrote in Galatians, “In Christ there is no longer Jew or Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for all are one...”
