PLAY THE POSSIBILITIES San Jose Jazz Summer Jazz Camp is designed for middle and high school students with skill levels from intermediate and up. Led by camp director Wally Schnalle and many of the region’s best teaching artists, the two-week day camp is held at the state-of-the-art facilities of the Valley Christian Schools Conservatory of the Arts in San Jose.
Offering deep immersion into every aspect of jazz—from theory to performance—each student participates in both a small group and big band. One advanced ensemble will be selected to play on stage at the 30th Annual San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, August 9–11, 2019.

PETER ERSKINE—SPECIAL GUEST INSTRUCTORTwo-time Grammy Award-winner Peter Erskine has released 50 recordings as a bandleader and has appeared on 700 albums and film scores. In 2017 he was inducted into Modern Drummer’s Hall of Fame and has been voted Best Jazz Drummer ten times by their readers. Erskine was one of the defining drummers of the seminal jazz-fusion band Weather Report. He has appeared with artists like Steps Ahead, Joni Mitchell, Steely Dan, Diana Krall, the Brecker Brothers, the Yellowjackets, Pat Metheny & Gary Burton and John Scofield. He is Professor of Practice & Director of Drumset Studies at USC, and conducts master classes worldwide.
