Dear Parents,

This week I’ve been focussing on the importance of feedback. It doesn’t matter who it is, receiving positive, constructive comment about a performance can truly enhance a person’s ongoing achievements.

Feedback is one of the easiest and most powerful tools we can use to motivate and cre-ate enthusiasm. The resulting behaviours can lead to a greater sense of self awareness and can be equated to using sign posts with feedback leading you to your ultimate goal more easily and faster.

I’m sure many of us find that if we tackle projects with enthu-siasm, it can be contagious and our partners in that project will also perform better. The impact and results of watching people complete projects with enthusi-asm, compared with others who approach a project lacking any energy is unmistakable.

Headmaster’s Message Rock Climbing

Last week Ryan Gaskon partici-pated in the QLD State Titles where he came 8th overall in his age group which is a fantastic result considering the 1st /2nd /3rd placements are all currently in the Australian Na-tional Youth Bouldering team.

He flew to Melbourne this week and has been climbing with the Australian Youth Climb-ing Coach, Will Hammersla (who has been coaching Ryan by correspondence since March) and then today Ryan joins the Australian Youth Climbing Team for a three day coaching camp before they depart overseas for the World Cup Titles. Ryan will stay in Melbourne to compete in the Victorian State Titles next weekend then he returns to Ballarat in early October for the Australian Youth Climbing championships.

We hope he is enjoying himself and will benefit immensely from exposure to different climbing facilities and expert coaching and interaction with the Austra-lian squad.

structive feedback can assist them - in determining how to achieve a goal; whether they’re heading in the right direction; if they’re using their time wisely; how they could assist others; and questioning if they have a good relationship with family, friends, teachers, coaches etc.

Before our students make the transition from school, I hope they remove the word ‘boring’ from their vocabulary. As they stride through life I hope they greet every task with enthusi-asm; the impact and results will be astonishing.

Sincerely,

Chris Tudor AM

Week 6 (Aug 24-Aug 28) of this term is Reading Week at St. Philip’s.

During this week students are encouraged to read works of literature (fiction or non-fiction), for relaxation and for enrichment. They will have the option of choosing a title from the College library shelves or bringing one of their own from home (and approved by their English teacher). The purpose of this exercise is to help our young learners to rediscover the magical world of the writ-ten word.

There will be no written work being pursued in the English classes of Years 7, 8 & 9 dur-ing the week. The set home-work will be related to further reading at home, and for this I solicit your cooperation. If you can read with your child/chil-dren at home, it will give them further encouragement, and you will also have strength-ened our resolve to make good readers of our students. Let us empower our children with this valuable tool, and provide them every opportu-nity during the week (and even thereafter) by encouraging the habit of reading.

Students are also invited to

Reading Week

They lie on the table, side by side The Holy Bible and the TV Guide.

One is well worn, but cherished with pride (Not the Bible, but the TV Guide)

One is used daily to help folks decide. (Not the Bible: it’s the TV Guide.)

As the pages are turned, what shall they see Oh, what does it matter?...turn on the TV.

Then confusion reigns, they can’t all agree on what they shall watch on the old TV.

So they open the book in which they confide (No, not the Bible.....it’s the TV Guide.)

The Word of God is seldom read. Maybe a verse ever they fall into bed.

Exhausted and sleepy and tired as can be... not from reading the Bible-from watching TV.

So then back to the table, side by side, lay the Holy Bible and the TV Guide.

No time for prayer....no time for the Word. The plan of salvation is seldom heard.

But forgiveness of sin so full and free is found in the Bible.....NOT on TV!

Wow what a term so far in Girls’ Boarding. We have welcomed 2 new exchanges Keziah and Jessica to the boarding house. They are both from South Africa and have gone into Year 11. We have also welcomed Paris to the boarding house, who has just moved from Western Austra-lia, and all new boarders have settled in really well. Over the weekends we have enjoyed camp fires with a range of delicious snacks, sports night in the stadium, fashion stakes, sushi making, and cupcake making for the RSPCA.

For the past two terms and this term the girls have been working extremely hard on producing amazing art for the art auction. On Friday 14 Au-gust, the night finally arrived. The Girls’ Boarding House Art Auction was in full action; live and silent auctions happening everywhere. It was great to see the school community and the boarding house combine to raise valuable money for the Alice Springs Women’s Shelter. In total we raised close to $1300 that will assist the Women’s Shelter in many ways. On behalf of the Girls’ Boarding House I would to thank everyone that came to the night, contributed art to the auction, assisted in setting up or in any way. I would like to personally congratulate these girls on their continued effort within the community with volunteering for the RDA, assisting with the Alice Springs

Boys’ Boarding News

It was another busy week-end in the boys’ boarding house. There was a big AFL match between Federal U18s and Westies U18s on Saturday afternoon. It was an elimination final match, with Dean Sullivan play-ing for Westies and Max Morgan, Josh Spry-Pilkington and Tyson Johnstone all playing for Federals. Feder-als ended up with bragging rights with a 30 point victory.

Max Morgan was named best on ground with an outstanding match in the forward line. Wayde Shad-forth will be playing for Fed-erals A-Grade side in their preliminary final this Satur-day. William Radovic played in a victorious Vikings U16 soccer side on Saturday and kept a clean sheet in goal.

On Sunday morning several boys volunteered to man the 3km drink station as part of the Running Festival (see above). It was a 6am start for the boys who did a great job handing out water to all the competitors. Kaylom John-son has almost completed his 40 hours of Community Service for the year as he sits on 37 hours.

Congratulations to Jacob Moore on being selected in the Alice Springs All Stars side to play against Adelaide United at Traeger Park.

The Alice Springs All Stars was a selection of the 16 most tal-ented footballers (soccer) that Alice Springs had to offer and Jacob made the side as one of the goalkeepers. He was also the youngest member of the side. The team played a full strength Adelaide United side, which are one of the top professional sides in the country, and includes Soc-ceroo goalkeeper Eugine Gale-kovic.

Adelaide United is also coached by Guillermo Amor who played more than 300 games for Barce-lona. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for Jacob and was an amazing experience for him.Adelaide United are coming to an end of their pre-season build up which has included games against Liverpool and Manches-ter City!

Tensions were high as the first round of the Annual Rock Tour Trophy was played out last Fri-day.

Staff captain, Nathan Bailey (partnering David Tudor) led the teams out against Jess Tieck and Stuart Berryman, with Tieck on fire, hitting all fairways and play-ing well. However, some handy putting from the experienced Bailey kept his pairing alive, while Tudor was consistent, and sunk an 18 foot putt for the staff to win the first pairing 3 and 2.

Leslie Tilbrook and James Tudor, had a hard-fought match with the youngsters Zed Brouwer and Nathan Gee. The staff gaveshots to the students on every hole, and the burglars won out, with Brouwer and Gee winning 4 and 2.

The 3rd pairing of Lyn Tieck and Kris Wheeler tried their hard-est against the student pairing of Joseph Worrall and Hayden Steinweg, however with Steinwig playing off a 32 handicap and birdying (net albatross) the par 5 6th, the experienced teachers could not match them losing 4 and 3.

The last pairing was a titanic struggle between the staff vice-captain Richard Worrall and his partner Stuart Todd, with Richard playing against his son George and new student recruit Jake Bailey, the younger Worrall had the better on his father early on, before capitulating in the last few holes. This battle came down to the last hole, before new staff recruit Todd, proved his worth by sinking a net eagle on the ninth to win two up.

With the scores locked in at two a piece at the end of round 1, Friday moves into Foursomes. The staff will be reinforced with new recruit Ramsay Wright, replacing new father of twins Stuart Todd.
