WIDTH FABRIC WARP X FILL PRICE

• Only Fiber 104 / 1W70 low aspect line available.

• Marblehead Weaves use the best, most expensive yarns in warp and fill: Fiber 104 and 1W70. Competing fabrics use little or none of these.

• 3.77, 4.77, 5.77, 6.77, 8.77, 9.77, 10.77, 11.77use Fiber 104 or Honeywell 1W70.

• Other yarns not made in 1W70 / Fiber 104.

• Marbleheads are the finest most tightly wovenfabrics in the world.

• For use in highest quality mainsails of 2.5 / 1aspect ratio or less.

• In light through medium weights, Marbleheadsuse close to even denier ratios: 1 / 1.5. In heavierweights, the ratio becomes closer to 1 / 2. Fillyarns are larger for more highly loaded sails. Theresult is more even crimp, so yarns lock ontoeach other, and rely more on weave tightnessthan resin for bias durability.

• Marblehead weaves require half the resin to achieve a particular bias spec than most high aspect fabrics.

• New 3.77 with 220 denier fill for highest performance light weight sails.

FABRIC PROPERTIES

1W70Honeywell

During resin impregnation the fabric isimmersed in a bath of suspended resin.

The resin is absorbed into the yarns. The amount of resin determines the

firmness of the finished sailcloth.

In the pre-fatigued finish, a super-firm formula of resin is used, which, after curing,is beat up by the steel buttons of the buttonbreaker. The remaining resin is well bonded,

and the finish is tough and durable.

The finish is so durable that a more severeimpact flutter machine was necessary tosufficiently abuse flutter samples so as toshow a gap between initial and flutteredsample graph curves on some fabrics.

• Standard High Modulus weaves in softer finish.Silky smooth soft feel.

• Tightly woven fabrics, using Dacron 52, Fiber 104, and Honeywell 1W70, the best sailcloth fibers made.

• SoftCloths are pre-fatigued: finished with additional resin, and then mechanically floggedand softened to unseat any loose resin, so the remaining finish is well bonded and moredurable than other finishes.

• Most Tall Ships require big, 1000 denier yarnsin both directions for ultimate tear, UV, abrasion,and tensile strength. Highest tenacity 1W70yarns provide exceptional strength.

• So tightly woven they can be finished withoutresin for very soft feel.

• Please note: Softcloth has little resin, so it will perform differently than highly resinated fabrics.

• A low roach soft cloth mainsail will not only be easy to handle, but there also will be less finish breakdownbecause of the low resin content.

• As cruising boats tend to be lower aspect, we have used more balanced, lower aspect ratio fabrics for ourSoftCloth line. These fabrics have higher yarn counts per inch than high aspect fabrics, and thus rely lesson resin and more on weave tightness for durability.

• Radial weaves use very high warp counts toachieve warp strength. They have substantiallymore yarn in the warp than in the fill.

• Balanced constructions offer best bias resistance,and stability without puckering.

• Lightweight fabrics are proportionately strongeron the warp than heavier weights. This is becausethey have lighter fill yarns: During weaving thewarp is pulled through the loom with very hightension. This tension bends light fill yarns, leavingwarp yarns with lower crimp. But it is unable to bend heavy fills, leaving more warp crimp,resulting in higher stretch under load.

Coated Nylon Finishes ExplainedSolid, high viscosity (thick) Urethane coating is pumped onto the

fabric, and “squeegeed” by a coating blade to control the weight

and thickness. Light weight, small fiber mass spinnaker fabrics

must be coated to reduce porosity.

THE RESULT:

• A cohesive film seals the fabric,encapsulating the yarns.

• Coated fabrics have zero porosity,and arguably better performancebecause no wind passes through.

• Coated fabrics are easier to cut, as they are pulled down on vaccum tables better, and are flatter for cutting.

Stabilized Nylon Finishes ExplainedThe fabric is dipped through a solution of dissolved resin. The resinis then cured at high temperature. Very small resin particles areembedded in the weave, restricting its stretch. The resin weightadd-on is so slight, it is nearly undetectable.

THE RESULT:

• Full resin impregnation. Arguably better durability.

• Porosity is higher than coated fabrics: no film on the surface.

• No coating means more fibers can be woven for the same weight:Higher strength, lower stretch(depending upon firmness.)
