Types of photographs

• Aerial photograph – taken directly from above (vertical)

• Oblique photograph – taken from an angle from above

Oblique

Aerial photographs show a ‘bird’s eye view’ while oblique photographs show a 3d view.

• Satellite photograph– taken from space.• Can show a large area (e.g. the whole

Earth)• They can also zoom in to street level.

Interpreting physical features from photographs

Relief (the shape of the land):• Is the land sloping or flat?• If slopes, are they steep or gentle?• Are there hills / mountains / valleys? What size / shape are they?

River / coastal features:• Is there a river?• Is it long / wide / short / narrow?• Is there a lake?• Are there rivers flowing into the lake?• What is the coastline like? • Is it straight or are there bays and headlands?• Are there beaches? How long / wide are they?• Are there islands in the rivers / sea? Describe their size and shape

Interpreting human features from photographs

Farmland• Are the fields large / small?• Regular or irregular pattern?• What colour is the land? What does this suggest about what is

being grown?• How are the fields separated – hedges, roads, rivers?

Settlement• Small settlement – what is the shape? (Nucleated, linear,

dispersed)• Housing developments – what pattern is the housing (grid, cul-

de-sac etc)? How large / small are the houses? Do they have gardens / garages?

• Can you identify shops, schools, places of worship, tourist facilities?

Transport & communications• What roads are there (motorways, A roads, small rural roads)?• What transport links can be identified? (airports, railways, ports)
