Annie Leibovitz 1949-2017

Annie Leibovitz is an American portrait photographer. Considered one of America's best portrait photographers, she developed her trademark use of bold colours and poses while at 'Rolling Stone’ and ‘Vanity Fair’. She photographed artists like John Lennon, Demi Moore, Caitlyn Jenner and various artists for Disney.

Leibovitz is much influenced by Richard Avedon.

Her family moved frequently with her father's duty assignments, and she took her first pictures when he was stationed in the Philippines during a war. She attended the San Francisco Art Institute and for several years, she continued to develop her photography skills.

History of work

Leibovitz started her career as a staff photographer, working for Rolling Stone magazine. In 1973 she was named a chief photographer of Rolling Stone, a job she would hold for 10 years. Leibovitz worked for the magazine until 1983

While working for Rolling Stone, Leibovitz became more aware of the other magazines and learned that she could work for magazines and still create personal work.

She was awarded The Royal Photographic Society's Centenary Medal and Honorary Fellowship in 2009. In the 1980s, Leibovitz's new style of lighting and use of bold colors and poses got her a position with Vanity Fair magazine.

This image inspires me because of its vibrancy. The colours on this image is bold and mature which is what makes it stand out. The over head lighting gives the image a glowy look which makes Adele seem like a Diva or a Goddess. The darkness of it may symbolise her maturity as an artist. Her lips contrast with the clothing which draws attention to the image.

This is another picture that is very vibrant and bright. The red outfit and the setting draws attention and it makes the image stand out. The outfit for the image is not the typical, appropriate outfit for a farm which also makes the image seem odd but beautiful.
