Stacy at Chaplains’ Day Out
My Lucky Day
I was perusing the newspaper about six months ago and ran across an article about the
Wounded Warriors at Nebo (WWAN). I read the article because I was looking for a volun-
teer activity and interaction with wounded warriors seemed like a great fit for me. I must
also admit, I was curious about the name “Nebo”. I am so glad that article got my atten-
tion!!
I have now been involved with the planning and participation in R&R
weekends for several months and the experience has been wonderful.
Getting to know these warriors and their families has been a real bless-
ing to me. Watching these worthy heroes relax and enjoy the activities
that Fredericksburg can offer them is really wonderful.
I strongly encourage anyone interested to get involved in this great
ministry. The ladies on the board are some of the most passionate and
hard-working people I know. The rewards of working with them and
the wounded warriors are awesome.

Since writing the above, Stacy has accepted the responsibility of planning and implementing
Day Events. Check out our blog or facebook page for photos and more details on these day
events.
Bravo Command Outing (8/22)
The company I worked for (many years ago) would issue challenges to see which depart-
ment could operate for a specified time with the least number of accidents or similar things
specific to our department and/or job. In addition to recognition, the winner received a
prize. Likewise, the WTB (Warrior Transition Battalion) challenges the companies (A, B &
C) periodically. Challenges involve several items relative to their jobs with specific criteria
for each. The company excelling in meeting the criteria are rewarded. Company B (Bravo)
was the winner earlier this year. They requested a day out at Lazy U Ranch. Everything
finally came together on Friday, August 22.
Sharon, Susan & I arrived at 8 a.m. to find some
wounded warriors, case workers and staff already
there setting up tables and ice chests full of wa-
ter. They helped us unload the donuts and other
breakfast snacks. All the time more people were
arriving. We ended up with approximately 60 in-
cluding spouses and children. Appointments pre-
vented many from attending.
There was fishing, bean bag toss, kayaking, chess,
scrabble, dominoes and other board games. Or one
could just relax, watch the water or watch the grass grow. Lt. Johansen encouraged all the
warriors to participate in several activities. He said at the end of the day everyone partici-

pating in 5 activities would be put in a drawing for a prize to be announced at the time of
the drawing. (One night's lodging in Fredericksburg donated by WWAN.)
The WWAN Team loaded up and left about 2PM and the party was still going strong.
Chaplains’ Day Out (9/5)
Have you ever heard of Compassion Fatigue? We had not until Chaplain Ginsburg explained to us that chaplains, who
are on duty 24/7 ministering to the sick, wounded, troubled, etc. reach a saturation point just like anyone else. Therefore,
with Chaplain Ginsburg’s help we arranged a “day of play” at Craig Russell’s Lazy U Ranch on Friday, September 5.
Thirty one chaplains and family members attended.
The quiet outdoors nestled near Lake
Placid not only enabled some to sit quiet-
ly by the water and catch up on reading
scripture but also enabled some to kayak
and swim on that lazy stream of wa-
ter. Others enjoyed archery, washers, ball
toss, chess, scrabble and just plain visit-
ing. Lunch was provided by Seguin First
Baptist Church.
WWAN is a local faith based ministry located in Fredericksburg, Texas. We are not associated with the
Wounded Warrior Project or other wounded warrior organizations. We are an all volunteer organization
totally supported by donations. At times we interface with others such as Operation Home Front to meet
specific needs. Although we are under the auspices of the Methodist Church, the ministry has become
ecumenical. GOD’S people doing GOD’s work!! It doesn’t get any better than that.

you go, God is sending you. Wherever
you are, God has put you there.
He has a purpose in your being there.

He wants to do through you where you
are Believe this and go in His grace and
love and power.

Card Classes
Although the ministry took a vacation from R&R weekends and Day Events between May and September, card classes at
WFSC continued twice a month. Attendance was rather sparse at time but that didn’t stop us from making some fun and
pretty cards.
After class we have a light lunch and pass out cookies to all military personnel in the WFSC and Marine facility. I just wish
the ladies of the DAR Ephraim Andrews Chapter Fredericksburg, TX could see the soldiers’ faces light up when we tell
them the cookies are home made!! Many who initially refused will take one with a wonderful smile. THANK YOU LA-
DIES!! Incidentally, these ladies have been providing cookies twice a month for a year now and have asked to continue.
West End Pizza Fund Raiser (9/28)
The generosity of the people and businesses in this community never ceases to
amaze me. West End Pizza, for the second year in a row, organized and hosted a
fund raiser for WWAN. They had numerous items donated by local businesses to
be raffled off, tee shirts for sale and their delicious never ending pizza by dona-
tion. All proceeds going to the ministry. There was live entertainment and a sur-
prise visit from Ms. Texas who served in both Iraq and Afghanistan. GOD was
definitely there. He brought a young couple (he’s a wounded warrior) to Freder-
icksburg to celebrate her birthday. Having never heard of the ministry they
thought it a scam. When Sharon told them about WWAN they became very excit-
ed because they plan to move to Houston area and start an equestrian therapy pro-
gram for veterans. Coincidence? I don’t think so!! Thank you Hal and Janet De-
genhardt and all the businesses donating prizes and EVERYONE attending!!

Archery Tournament (9/20)
Dustin Jones recruited seven soldiers and his son Justin to come to Fredericksburg on Saturday September 20th for an
archery tournament sponsored by the Fredericksburg Archery Club. The
group enjoyed an evening BBQ and spent the night at Karl and Mary
Ranslaben's " White House." Several went for a night drive after dinner
and were treated to seeing some good wildlife. After a big breakfast Sun-
day morning, they went to the Kowert Ranch to participate in a 3D archery
tourney- for some their first competition. Dustin said it was a "great bunch
of people" and a "very laid back and fun tournament." He said it was per-
fect for the newbies. David Feller, archery club president, waived the en-
try fee and the club also treated the group to lunch afterwards. We had
given them money for lunch, so Dustin decided to donate that money back
to the club in the form of raffle tickets. Several of the soldiers won prizes-
that is a win-win-win scenario!!!!
Dustin has a giving spirit. He works with wounded warriors helping them
adjust to their new normal and reintegration. The warriors respond to him
because he's one of them and he won't take no for an answer. Keep up the
good work Dustin!!
Note of Thanks
It’s always nice getting notes of gratitude from ‘our’ wounded warriors. Notes like the following one remind us why we
do this. “We appreciate everything you have done for our family. We felt so peaceful and so relaxed with the warmness
of your hospitality. . . .This getaway meant lot to my family and me. God bless you all and thank you all for being so
kind and generous. . . .Sincerely, Jasmine, Johathan, Johathan Jr. and Jesenia Alvarez.”
Fishing Tournament (9/27)
It was drizzling and overcast but that didn't deter the wounded warriors that arrived at
Jenschke's lake on Saturday. This is the second year the Fritztown Bass Club has hosted a
fishing tournament at the lake for wounded warriors. When they arrived they were pre-
sented with gift bags full of lures, hooks and other fishing "stuff". After snacking on do-
nuts and kolaches they headed for the boats and serious fishing. Supposedly it was great
weather for fishing but someone forgot to let the fish know. Several were caught but noth-
ing over two pounds. That certainly didn't keep everyone from having fun. After several
hours on the water the fish were weighed in (for trophies) and lunch was served. Boy
Scout Troop 135 provided lunch (this was their second year also). After lunch there were
drawings for lots of gifts then our warriors had to load up and head back to Fort Sam. Fun
Day. Thank You Fritztown Bass Club and Troop 135 for your generosity!!
