Photography Excursion During Week 7, the Year 11 and 12 General Design Photography class ventured away from the College for half a day of on-location photography. They visited the Gwelup Secret Garden and the Wanneroo Pines for landscape and still life subject matter.

In response to their main project for the semester, students had to plan a ‘Twisted Fairy Tale’ photoshoot that utilised symbolic props, as well as the landscape. The Secret Garden provided a very lush and enchanted backdrop, in contrast to the Wanneroo Pines, which was better suited as a setting for more dark and eerie shots.

Students will be using their excursion photos, as well as those taken in the studio at the College, to design a Netflix series thumbnail for a ‘Twisted Fairy Tale’. It was fantastic to see the creative ways in which students approached the subject matter. A range of their completed work will be on display later in the year at the College’s Creations Exhibition. Mrs Amy Richardson Head of Visual Art

Youth Leadership Academy Daniel Witherington 10MB has been offered the amazing opportunity of being accepted into the Knights of the Southern Cross Youth Leadership Academy this year. Daniel met with his mentor Peter Westneat and will be attending several workshops and team building events throughout the year. He will be learning leadership skills and working on faith formation and personal goals such as public speaking. He is looking forward to learning lots of new skills for future leadership opportunities and to help in the St Andrew’s Parish. Ms Debbie White Assistant Deputy Principal Year 10

Year 7 Social Sciences Waterwise Incursion On 18th March, the Water Corporation came to talk to the Year 7 cohort about Water in the World. Each student was able to engage with the session with the use of an interactive clicker. Students learned a great deal about water and the work of the Water Corporation and will be using some of what they have learnt in an upcoming assessment.

"I think Water Corporation is super interesting because it shows us how vast the system of sourcing healthy drinking water really is” Brendan Nguyen 7GB “The water corporation made a fun presentation which was most enjoyable. They told me many things I hadn't known before and it was very interesting! The speaker poured water on limestone and showed how it caught the water.” Keeno Uriarte 7GA Mrs Helen Gray Social Science Teacher

Geography Field Trip On Tuesday 23rd March, the Year 11 ATAR Geography class went to the Perth Hills Discovery Centre in Mundaring, to further their understanding of bushfires. It was a great day for students to get outside the classroom and engage in practical activities on bushfire risk, mitigation, impact and response. Below is a summary of two students’ thoughts of the day.

We started the day with a talk about how people could prepare themselves and their houses against bushfires. We were able to examine a building in the area and point out certain things that would be at risk during a bushfire. We were also able to see the different effects that prescribed burns had on the area and measured things such as the height of scorch marks on the trees, canopy cover and the depth of fuel load. We ended the day with a PowerPoint presentation that taught us about the Parkerville bushfire, and we got to see the equipment and try on the clothing the Bushfire Volunteers used. We all enjoyed such a knowledgeable day. Jess Rogers 11EB and Izzy Wood 11DB Miss Jessica Varady Geography Teacher

Being part of the Hurricanes is an amazing experience for students in all year groups and we learn new skills and bond with people of all ages. On Sunday 21st March, we took time out of our normal Sunday morning to practice a challenging stunt that will be used in

this year’s routine, when we compete in various competitions such as AASCF and Aussie Gold. It was a very hot day, but we managed to pull through and we were rewarded with a pizza lunch supplied by Mr Summers to end our training session. I am so proud of everyone in the team and I can’t wait for the many performances to come. Alicia Glynn 10EA Co-Captain, Hurricanes Cheerleading Team

Football Academy Freo Dockers - Girls AFL Carnival On Tuesday 23rd March, our Years 7 to 10 Female Football Academy classes attended the West Perth Freo Cup Carnival. The day was a great success with some great football being played and even better behaviour and sportsmanship from our teams.

Our Year 7 Girls team played in the Years 7/8 competition against schools predominately made up of Year 8 girls. Although they didn’t win a game, they managed to score in every game bar one. The hit out has prepared them well for the ACC Year 7 Carnival in Term 2, where they get to play against girls their age. Our Year 8 Girls team were joined by half the Year 9 class and also played up in the Year 9/10 competition. After losses to the two powerhouses Mater Dei and our other College team, they strung together 4 great wins for the day, playing with great enthusiasm and displaying good skills. The rest of the Year 9 class joined our Year 10 girls. They went through undefeated in the Year 9/10 competition. The girls played a sensational brand of football and were the champion school on the day, winning the West Perth Freo Dockers Cup. All our girls played the Irene McCormack way by handballing out of traffic to runners on the outside, finding space ahead of the ball and hitting targets with their kicks. All in all, a great day on the park. Mr Ken Dillon AFL Football Academy

ACC Swimming Carnival Our team fought valiantly at Monday’s ACC E Division Carnival, and their efforts were realised when we managed to remain in this division for another year. With a lack of depth in our swimming ranks exacerbated by the disappointing reluctance of capable swimmers to assist our cause, the performance of our committed team is all the more meritorious. Our small squad did their absolute best, and we certainly had some weary students by the time we boarded the bus to come home. Brodie Carpene led the way in the pool, and his terrific performances saw him awarded Age Champion for the Under 14 Boys. We also congratulate Olivia Chapman, Under 13 Girls, and team captains Noah Parry, Under 15 Boys, and Aleisha Carpene, Open Girls, who finished fourth in their respective age divisions.

It is really important to acknowledge the support that many of our students give to our swimming program. We have a core group of our squad who train with purpose and give of their best at all times. These students are the backbone of any sporting program and we are very appreciative of their efforts. We are also very fortunate to have Mr Carbone looking after this group and his dedication to the swim season is exceptional. He is the driving force behind our training program and was instrumental in the setup of our swimming events this term. I’m sure that I speak on behalf of all students and parents in thanking him for a job exceptionally well done.

Year 7 Lightning Carnival Our Year 7 students are looking forward to a day of sporting fun next Tuesday at the Year 7 CAS Lightning Carnival.
