The Estonian Academy of Arts is a place for exchanging knowledge between people with very heterogeneous

experiences. Therefore it is proposed an inspiring and stimulating spatial solution, which underlines the

valuable communication between those: the students, the professors, the teachers and the public.

According to the four faculties - Fine Arts, Design, Art Culture and Architecture, the Estonian Art Academy

is Organized through four interlocking volumes, each one representing one faculty. The four corresponding

canted inner voids shall encourage an intense interaction, exchange and cooperation between the faculties

and all users. At the same time they offer an exciting itinerary through the building and connect all levels,

creating variable conditions, both from inside and out. On the entrance level they merge into one connecting

and generous atrium. As the sections make clear, visitors gain a sens of the building´s internal dynamic by

means of intersecting sight lines and gradual transitions from one void to another.

The EAA can be interpreted as a densified campus model: The faculties, each with its own courtyard, are

“pushed” into each other to form a new compact and urban version of the otherwise classic model of free

standing objects. The four faculties are orientated towards “their” atrium (square), assembling their rooms

around the void. The architecture´s appearance oscillates between the solid and the hollow. When entering

from the city, the visitor experiences the core of the building as a void - a public space. Emerging from one

common origin - the connecting, generous atrium space, stretches into four inclined volumes, tentacle-like,

into the depths and heights of the building. The atrium receives a microclimate. It acts as a temperature buffer between the outside and the inside.

MOCAPEMUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART . SHENZHEN . 2nd PRIZE

The proposal for the new Museum of Contemporary Art and Planning Exhibition in Shenzhen is based on a

three-fold spatial concept. Firstly the MOCAPE becomes a meeting place for art and urban architecture with

an intense and international atmosphere. Secondly the proposal is based on transformability. We suggest a

rich spatial structure, which allows the most open and flexible organisation for exhibitions and research for

the future of this significant cultural centre. Thirdly the proposal gives importance to a strong public attractor

situated in the centre of Shenzhen.

The proposal uses an urban model to organise the museum. The inside of the museum, as an infinite street

- the loop - is the continuation of the outside, the city. You can compare it with walking through the streets

of an art district, where you enter a gallery, return to the street after some meditating time and some further

steps and the thoughtful view into the nearby park you find another interesting exhibition.

The visitor´s movement becomes the leimotiv for the spatial organization of the museum. Circulation equals

exhibition. Similar to a discovery landscape, the visitor experiences contemporary art and urban architecture

(planning exhibition) parallel in time.

The continuous and interweaving loop allows a chronological experience as well as unexpected relations.

Important exhibition programs of both, the Contemporary Art and the Architectural Planning can be found

here. Special intermediates spaces act as intimate “Galleries” where the visitor can discover “private”

exhibition rooms, interactive workshop stations or digital and physical displays.

The transparent character of the interior allows unexpected views, establishes visual interfaces and

relationships and creates startling cross-views between different activities.

CREMATORIUMCREMATORIUM AND MORTUARY HOUSES . VILA NOVA DE GAIA

This project is situated in one suburban area of Porto, were there isn´t a strong identity.

The client premises for the Crematorium and Mortuary Houses was a building that was flexible and adaptable

to different religious ceremonies.

My principal idea for the Crematorium and Mortuary Houses was to develop a reference building that would

persuade people to have a more positive and natural atittude towards a hard happening in life; death. A

building inspired on organic and natural forms that express the sense of cycles and transitions in Nature. It

doesn´t have religious symbols but a strong symbology.

It is not closed to the city. The buildings adapts to the space but it doesn´t follows references of the area. The buildings adapts to the space but it doesn´t follows references of the area.

It is like a cell that is implanted in the center of the space and is connected to the territory through 3 paths.

This paths break and deform the skin of the cell. She moves and stabilizes when she finds equilibrium. The

centre of the cell is still a magnetic point of the whole.

The walls concave and convex, fragmented in precise points define exterior, interior and transition spaces.

The following project consists of an intervention in a peripheric area of Warsaw. The assignment was to

develop some urban solutions for the area, based on the American model of urban design. The objective was

to densify space, making local interventions and reinforcing its own diversities. The project was developed

based on two parallel approaches: the reinforcement of three areas of identity and six themathic stripes. They

cross themselves and reinforce the potential of the existing space. A new regular grid and new buildings were

added, intensifying diversities of the different areas of this space.
