The most prominent theme that has suraced over the early years o Photojournale website is the connectedness o

the human existence across our planet and the inter relationships we all share. It shows, with all encouragement and

perseverance, the similarities we share cross culturally, regardless o the geo political or geographic boundaries that

defne our interactions and physical planet.

The collection o photos selected in Connections Across A Human Planet has been drawn rom a number o stories.

These are our human stories, our commonalities, and our truths. The selection is not only drawn or their beauty

or their technical excellence, but out o the essence they capture, the story they tell, in a captured moment o time,

somewhere across our planet. I eel these stories and moments are universal and can be understood by everybody

    across the globe.

The connections we share are endemic truths. The photos in Connections Across A Human Planet share an immediacyo these truths. They are compassionate, energetic, sometimes un and celebratory, at other times conronting. However,

they do draw us into participating in rituals, emotions, needs and conicts that defne our humanity, wherever we are

    on our human planet.

This book would not have come to lie without some very special contributions. Lisa Hogben, Mike Fox, Erica McDonald

gave their time as photo editors in selecting the work presented in this book, assisted by Santanu Chakrabati. Peter

Barwick contributed on the art direction, cover design and digital pre press advice. Also a very special thanks or all

the contributing photographers without whom Photojournale Connections Across A Human Planet would have no

reason o being or we might miss seeing our inherent connectedness. You need to be celebrated. This book tells many

stories that are representative o a collective consciousness, an inherent inquisitiveness, artist eye, sense o story andadventure, exploration and human realism that are characteristics o the nature o the Photojournale photographers.

Further special thanks to Ami Vitale or her contribution o the books oreword and pictures o her experiences and

Igor Sherman and Yaniv Nadav or their inspiring work that makes the covers o this book.

In 2000, I had the rare opportunity to live in a remote village in the West Arican country o Guinea Bissau. The

experience set me on a very dierent path as a photographer rom the one I previously had as an editor in New York.I shared a mud hut and the daily responsibilities with women and their children in a remote village o Fulanis, once a

nomadic group o herders. Together we gathered water and frewood, collected cashews and mangoes and slowly they

introduced me to their intricate and complex society.

It was in this village o Dembel Jumpora, that I discovered a place that is rarely reported in mainstream press. It was not

the Arica o war and amines and plagues, nor was it the idealized world o saaris and exotic animals. Instead it was a

look into the simplicity and beauty o how the majority o people on this planet live. There, everyday is a struggle but

there was much to be learned. I was mesmerized by the magnifcence o the people who gave so much to open up my

eyes to the beauty, wonder and sadness o their lives. Through it all, I was reminded o how similar we all are despite

the distances between us. One memory in particular reminds me o this -- My last evening in the small village I satwith a group o children beneath a sea o stars talking into the night about my return home. One o the children , Alio,

innocently asked me i we had a moon in America. It seemed so symbolic and touching that he should eel like America

was separate world, and serves as a constant reminder that we are all tied together in an intricate web, whether we

    believe it or not.

This experience shaped who I am both as a human being and as a journalist. As I work to tell the stories rom ar away

places, it is my intention to highlight our surprising and subtle similarities more than just the obvious dierences between

    all o our cultures.

When I heard about the Photojournale project, it inspired me deeply. Rather than send a photographer rom anothercountry, history and culture, Photojournale has collected work rom residents o each country. These images give us a

glimpse into lives we might no otherwise see and emphasize not how dierent we are but rather our similarities. The

intentions seem to be to get past mere headlines to try to get a truer sense o who we all are. Perhaps now, more than

ever, the need to get beyond the stereotypes and dramatic images and instead allow people to tell their own stories in

    a humanistic way.

current era were to be evolved beyond war, beyond amine and were to be exploring

the outer reaches o the universe with abandon.

This Br ave New World that had been prophesised by some o the best creative minds in

literary felds has become astonishingly close to the reality o our world at the end o the

frst decade o the twenty frst century. From scientifc advancements as varied as cloning

living creatures and their body parts to wireless internet communications that can enable

ordinary people to hold conversations and collect inormation rom as ar away as the

moon, the world has advanced in technology in ways undreamt by those earlier authors.

Yet undamentally we as the human species have changed little in many thousands o

    years o development.

Love, hate, amine and plenty still dominate our all too human state. We eat, drink, sleep,

reproduce, regenerate and destroy in equal measure. We are as we are. A gregarious,

eclectic, murderous, compassionate and sometimes thinking species that believes,

perhaps erroneously that we have dominion over the earth and its creatures.

Yet we all share one thing, our nature as human beings and our infnite and incredible

    diversity.

The experience o contributing to and editing this frst oray into publishing by

Photojournale has been an unique experience. To a past generation this book, created

rom an electronic gathering o people who have never met nor in many cases evenspoken, I am sure, would seem like the making o a talisman, a magical convergence o art

and technology. Those earlier authors would have been awestruck by the concept. Yet

here it is - Connections Across A Human Planet a photographic journal describing who

we are, who we remain, how we love, how we fght and how we still retain our hope or

    better things- come what may.

All o the photographers whose work has been selec ted have created this book rom their

own humanity, rom pictures o their world and the world around them. We have been

connected through the space o microwaves and have seen through eyes that speak a

hundred dierent languages. We have compiled a snapshot o our times that all people who

look inside will see, somewhere, something o themselves projected. The photographers

o Connections Across A Human Planet have proved beyond a shadow o a doubt that

we acknowledge and celebrate our Brave new world, that has such people in it.

it was ascinating to observe how, in one or more ways, we are all connected belie

systems, personal goals, living conditions, employment challenges, interests, amily

environments, and outlook, on local and international aairs. I was delighted to be invited

to help edit this book which, I eel, is a frst s tep in eectively representing humanity as it

exists without religious, political, or geographic boundaries.

Md. Kabirul Islam sadly met his fate in a car accident in Bangladesh before seeing his work

published in this book. May he rest in peace.
