• Not only has the advances in technology affected everyone in their everyday life, but it has greatly impacted photojournalists

• In this timeline I have highlighted 8 important aspects that have had an impact on photojournalists

This process was invented by Frederick Scott Archer

The process included multiple long and dangerous steps including:1. Clean the plate (pour collodion on a

tin plat)2. Silver nitrate bath (plates sits in here

for 3 minutes)3. Take the photo4. Developing (cover plate in developer

& rock gently for 10-15 seconds, water wash, put in fixer to develop)

CONTINUED....What was needed…

- Chemicals- Film Camera

- Mask- Gloves- Darkroom

• This process was very time consuming for a photojournalist and they had to be able to work quick, that is as soon as they took the image they had to go straight to the dark room to start the developing process

• This process was dangerous because of all the chemicals needed to be used, this is why a mask and gloves were needed for the safety of the photojournalist

• This process was discovered when people were trying to find an alternative to the wet plate process

• It was invented by Richard L. Maddox

• The process was much easier and required less equipment

• The plates were prepared in advance and they had more time to develop them

• This process made the job of a photojournalists a lot easier and gave them more time

• “They could be stored until exposure, and after exposure it can be brought back to the darkroom for development at leisure”

• This was invented by George Eastman, as well as the first kodak camera

• It took 100 photos and was sent back to the company where it was developed and sent back to the costumer

• He succeeded in bringing photography to the mainstream

• “The Eastman Kodak Company was the first of its kind to mass produce standardized photography equipment.”

• Photojournalists now had an easily transportable camera, which meant they could take photos from nearly anywhere

1935-KODACHROME FILM

• “Kodachrome is a brand name for a non substantive color reversal film”

• The 1st unsuccessful attempt was by John Capstaff, but it was successfully commercialized by Leopold Godowsky Jr. & Leopold Mannes

• It was one of the 1st successful color materials

• This opened a new door for photojournalists who before this solely developed their images in black and white

• Photojournalists could now make their images in color which was a huge step

1975-DIGITAL CAMERAS

• The first digital camera was invented by Steve Sasson, a Kodak engineer

• It was the size of a toaster, weighing almost 8 pounds and only had 0.1 megapixels

• “The photos took 23 seconds to write on a cassette tape and only had the capacity to take black and white photos”

• This digital camera was obviously not easy for a photojournalist to move around because of how much it weighed

• Despite being difficult to carry, this was the 1st time photojournalist were able to see the images they took right away instead of having to go through a long process just to develop them

1994-BLOGGING

http://www.doz.com/content/trends-in-blogging-2016

• The first blog was created by Justin Hall called Links.net, though it wasn’t officially termed blog

• “Weblog wasn’t officially coined until 1997 by Jorn Barger, of the blog Robot Wisdom and in 1998 was the 1st

known instance of a blog on a traditional news site”

• Blogging is extremely important in the work of a photojournalist

• It allows them to openly express photos that were not published, and everyone can see them

• This is such an advantage to the photojournalist who really want to get out great images and stories to the public

• The 1st camera phone was invented by Philippe Kahn

• “Kahn inserted the 1st

point, shoot, and share camera into a Motorola Startac.”

• He invented this phone because he was determined to send his family a photo of his newborn baby (photo on top left)

• Though the quality of camera phone till this day is not the best, this step was huge to photojournalists

• This meant they could take photos whenever and wherever they wanted it really made their jobs so much easier

• Benefits- No wires- Quick access to storage- Ability to share albums & photos with

one step- You’ll never have to worry about a full

SD card

• This has to be one of the biggest changes in history for a photojournalist

• They are able to shoot and send in an instant, this is a huge step from the beginning when it took hours or multiple steps to send just one photo
