Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of our
Members and Supporters ... thank you for another
year of support for the Riesling Trail.
Hello Member
and welcome to our Summer E-News | Along the Riesling Trail ...
Visit our website at http://rieslingtrail.com.au/ for up to date information of what's
happening on the Riesling Trail and around the Clare Valley.
From the Chairman
Riesling Trail Management Committee
Chairman’s report, AGM, 10th November, 2016
This year’s Chairman’s report is a mix of achievements and challenges.
We have maintained our membership which gives us a very good income base for on-
going maintenance and facilities along the Trail.
The number of Trail users is down a bit from 2015 but on a par with 2014. This may
be in part due to the much wetter year but also to failing batteries in the original
Trakers. These Trakers have now been replaced.
The heavy rainfall during the year has caused some damage to the Trail. This will be
repaired as part of the upgrade work by Clare Quarry.
We have quite a few projects in progress, including the Trail upgrade and the extension
of the Trail into Auburn ....

Allan Mayfield, Chairman
Trail Progress
Good news!
Gary Sims has now completed the upgrade from Mulkiri Road to Wakefield Road
(2.3km), except for a bit more watering & rolling.
I drove along it with him this morning & they have done an excellent job.
He is making the centre 1.5m level, rather than a curved crown, which will be
better for Trail users.
The Trail is still open while they are doing this.
Gary has a sign each end of where they are working telling Trail users to proceed
with caution once the operator has seen them.
We are waiting for Fox to finish tree trimming just north of Auburn & also to cart
more crusher dust down there to then do the section from Auburn to Mulkiri
Road.
He will also repair the section north of Greenwood Park Road (John Bastion's)
where it has washed the edges.
Pipes are going under the Trail at the north of this cutting (ie Mulkiri Road
crossing) to stop so much water going down there again.

Donations made to Riesling Trail maintenance
are now tax deductible
Donations made to help the maintenance and development of the Riesling Trail will
now be tax deductible in a move intended to increase community involvement in
the future of the popular trail.
The attraction, which recreates part of the old railway path from Adelaide to Spalding,
is currently being supported by the generosity of volunteers, grants and businesses,
but the Riesling Trail Committee hope more funding will aid bigger, and better
projects.
“We [need to] maintain a solid financial footing so we’re in a position to get more
grants and attract more money from the public,” treasurer of Riesling Trail Committee,
Peter Wood said.
“People who donate give us that base to get better grants from organisations, as well
as [government] grants,“
Mr Wood said the more the community put into supporting the trail, the more likely
they would be able to get the grants and government support they need.
“If you walk into any government organisation with no money in the bank and tell
them you’d like a grant, you’ve got [no] hope” Mr Wood said.
“The Riesling Trail is one of the main reasons people come to the mid north these days
as almost as many people come to [the Clare Valley] to ride, as they do to sample
wines”
“The grant we get will depend on how much community support we have”
This year the committee seeks to raise over $100,000 with the aid of the mid north
community to fund new projects and repair of the trail to its historic path, which
will see the restoration of an historic bridge

Newsletter No. 2 17 November 2016
I have reached the stage where most of the serious research has been done, and
am spending more time with photographs and diagrams now. However, I continue
to tinker around the edges, and surprise myself with new pieces of information.
