Throughout its history, Puig has had a special connection with nautical sports and a keen interest in sailing. The entire family has always shared a love of this sport that embodies so many of the values on which the company was founded. As the sponsor of the Copa del Rey from 1984 through 2006, Puig worked hard to make this event one of the most exciting, elegant and pres-tigious sailing events on the international yachting circuit. In the same spirit, one of the family’s company yachts, Azur de Puig, participated in the world’s most exclusive regattas for more than 15 years. The Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona is a natural out-growth of the company’s long and success-ful association with the Copa del Rey and a perfect reflection of the unique relationship between Puig and sailing.

This regatta was created in 2008 out of a desire to revive the nautical spirit and tradition that has been so much a part of Barcelona throughout its history. It is an event brimming with beauty, elegance and tradition, showcasing the great historic value of the boats that come to compete.

The Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona is already well respected as an important leg of the international regatta circuit, but this year it will include a unique additional event that promises to make it an irresistible mecca for serious yachting fans: the Puig 12mR World Championship, a competition that will uni-te some of the world’s finest examples of boats in this particular class. This legendary international fleet, which has more than a century of history, was a major protagonist during some of the most glorious decades of the America’s Cup competitions— from the 1950s through the 1980s.

The Puig 12mR World Championship will kick off on July 13, just a few days before the beginning of the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona, which starts on July 16. Both competitions will conclude on July 19, wrapping up an exceptional week that will bring almost one hundred wonders of naval technology together off the coast of Barcelona and transform the city into an unforgettable and extraordinary floating museum.

New in 2014: The America’s Cup Challenge

For one week in July, Puig will imbue Barce-lona with the spirit of one of international yacht racing’s most time-honored events: the 12-meter regatta. The long, fast boats manned by large crews that will participate in this year’s Puig 12mR World Champions-hip have played a significant role in the development of sailing during 20th century. They have been designed by some of the world’s finest naval architects, including Fife, Burgess, Nicholson and Stephens.

Since the inception of this class in 1907, 196 12-meter sailboats have been cons-tructed. Some of them have competed in sporting events of great importance such as the 1908, 1912 and 1920 Olympic Games; the elegant regattas held in Great Britain and continental Europe during the 1930s; and the ten America’s Cup Challenges held between 1958 and 1987. Their design and achievements have made them genuine naval treasures whose home ports are lo-cated at different points around the globe, from Australia to the United States, not to mention the boats registered in Northern and Southern European fleets.

One of many curiosities of the 12-me-ter class is its name, as the designation “12-meter” does not refer to the length of a boat’s hull but rather the sum of compo-nents included in the complex formula that governs its design and construction. That said, 12-meter sailboats range from around 20 to 23 meters in length with masts rea-ching a height of approximately 26 meters. By modern rules, 12-meter sailing boats are divided into five categories: Grand Prix,

Modern, Traditional, Vintage and Antique.

The boats participating in the Puig 12mR World Championship in Barcelona repre-sent all of these categories, except the last. Nearly 20 boats hailing from eight different countries (the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, Argentina and Portugal) will compete in the event. A fine example is the Vim, one of the most highly regarded 12-meter sailboats in the world today. The Vim was built in 1939 and featured an innovative aluminum mast. Its owner took it to England where it won 19 of the 28 regattas in which it competed. The boat was shipped back to the US during World War II.

Another iconic boat in this class is the Nya-la, commissioned by the president of Stan-dard Oil as a wedding gift for his daughter Lucie who married the famous yachtsman Briggs Cunningham, known for inventing a downhaul device bearing his name that increased the speed of racing sailboats and for his success as skipper of the Columbia, which he sailed to victory during the 1958 America’s Cup race.

Not to be forgotten is the legendary Kooka-burra II, designed by John Swarbrick and Iain Murray, which played an important role in the 1987 America’s Cup, in which it came in third behind the Kookaburra III and the Australia IV. The participation of these sailboats will make the Puig 12mR World Championship a historic event that is bound to thrill spectators in Barcelona this July 13 -19.

The return of the classics: the VII Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona

Heading towards a historic seventh edition, the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona has beco-me recognized as one of the main regattas on the international classic sailing calendar. The exclusive atmosphere of the event and the prestige of the competitors it attracts are only two of the reasons why year after year more yacht owners and sailing con-noisseurs are becoming unconditional fans of this event.

Nearly 50 classic and vintage boats from Spain and countries such as England, Fran-ce, the United States and Italy will provide a vast array of nautical splendor rarely seen in major cities such as Barcelona. July 16 through the 19, the Real Club Náu-tico de Barcelona (Barcelona Royal Yacht Club) will host a maritime legacy that al-most defies description: unique, century-old boats, more contemporary vessels that combine the purist lines of classic yacht de-sign and the latest naval technology, and a select gathering of yachtsmen and women who not only compete with the same fierce rigor demonstrated by champions in other types of nautical sports but also bring a style and elegance born of tradition and the spirit of competition that will make this an unforgettable, one-of-a-kind event.

The VII Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona will also host a number of boats known for key moments their histories, such as the Moonbeam IV, on which Grace Kelly and Prince Rainer III of Monaco and spent their honeymoon in 1956. Another legend that will be sailing into the Barcelona harbor is the elegant Mariette, requisitioned by the US Coast Guard during World War II as a West Coast patrol boat.

In keeping with the International Medite-rranean Committee (CIM) regulations, boats competing in this regatta will be divided into three categories based on each boat’s model and year of construction: Vintage Boats, Classic Boats, and Big Boats.

100 years of Puig history in Barcelona

The history of Puig is closely linked to the history of Barcelona. From the company’s very beginnings to the present day, Puig and Barcelona have had a shared history and destiny. They have grown together, each one an inseparable part of the other’s identity for a century. It is therefore not at all surprising that the firm has maintained its headquarters here even when it beca-me a major international corporation. To celebrate the first 100 years of its corporate history, Puig has inaugurated Puig Tower, designed by CGA Arquitectos and world-re-nowned Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, winner of the Pritzker Prize and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts.

Strategically located in the Plaza Europa of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, the company’s new 100-meter-high headquarters spans 15,000 square meters of floor space rising up 23 stories. Majestic in appearance, it is also highly sustainable: it is one of a select group of only nine office buildings in Spain to have obtained LEED Gold certification.

Furthermore, six years ago Puig put Bar-celona back on the coveted list of major Mediterranean cities that host prestigious international sailing competitions. The first sailing competition organized in Barcelo-na was held in 1883, but it was not until 1886 that the city began to regularly host regattas involving small racing boats. Since 1929, when the city was the one of the hosts of the World Mediterranean Cruise, which coincided with the Barcelona World Exposition, the city has served as the site of numerous sailing competitions. Many of the boats that now participate in the

Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona first put out to sea during the early decades of the 20th century.

The seventh edition the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona offers the general public a rare opportunity during any given year or place in the world to see historically and cultura-lly significant boats in action, an experience usually reserved for a privileged few. The regattas organized almost simultaneously for the Puig Vela Clàssica Barcelona and the Puig 12mR World Championship will together constitute an unparalleled inter-national event that will mark the 100th Anniversary of the firm and its passionate commitment to the capital of Catalonia.

No other city in the world hosts a regatta with classic boats of this caliber. Among the most exclusive venues where classic yachts gather to compete (Antigua, Anti-bes, Newport, the Isle of Wight, Cannes, etc.), only one is a major international city: Barcelona.

The dates chosen for this year’s regattas in Barcelona, July 13-19, fit perfectly into the international yachting calendar, as the ma-jority of the world’s classic sailboats spend the summer participating in an elite circuit of competitions held at key points along the Mediterranean coast.

With more than 140 years of history, the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona (RCNB) is a major reference in the world of Medi-terranean sailing. The club is a founding member of the International Mediterranean Committee (CIM), the Spanish Yacht Club Association (AECN) and Barcelona Sports and Culture and is affiliated with such orga-nizations as the Royal Spanish Sailing Fede-ration (RFEV), the Catalan Sailing Federation (FCV), and the Real Asociación Nacional de Cruceros (RANC).

The RNCB has sister yacht clubs in various European countries and a range of recipro-cal membership agreements with clubs and organizations such as the Yacht Club de Monaco, the Yacht Club Italiano, the Yacht Club de France and the Circolo del Remo e della Vela italiano.

The RCNB has been the recipient of various awards honoring its distinguished contribu-tion to the community as a sports organi-zation. In 1999, it received a Royal Order of Merit gold plaque from the Spanish government, and in 2003 it was awarded a gold Medal for Sporting Merit from the Barcelona City Council. It received the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation’s Golden Anchor Award in 1998 and was designated as the best sports organization in Catalonia by Mundo Deportivo in 1997.

July 13 through the 19, the Real Club Náuti-co de Barcelona will be buzzing with social activity: there will be mid-morning pre-race meetings, seafood lunches, post-regatta refreshments and cocktail receptions as the sun slips below the horizon every afternoon. Due to the greater number of participants in this year’s dual event, the entertainment area has been enlarged to accommodate up to a thousand yachtsmen and women.

The Village, which will serve as a place to meet and relax overlooking the sea, will also be the site of the opening and awards cere-monies and a farewell party that will move to the beat of The Tall Tutsies.

This spot is where yacht owners and crew members mix and mingle with local autho-rities and an elite group of local and inter-national guests each year in an informal and relaxing atmosphere.

Year after year, major sponsors such as Bombay Sapphire, Nespresso, Coca-Cola, Damm, and ISDIN help make the Village a great place to stop and relax during the regatta.

VINTAGE YACHTS

CLASSIC YACHTS

BIG BOATS

These are yachts built in wood or metal from original plans and launched prior to December 31, 1949.

They are divided into three categories according their sails and rigging:

• CLASS A: Vintage boats with gaff-rigged sails also known as gaffs.• CLASS B: Vintage boats with Marconi (Bermudan) sails and ketch, yawl, or schooner rigging. • CLASS C: Vintage boats with Marconi sails and sloop or cutter rigging.

These are yachts built in wood or metal from original plans and launched prior to December 31, 1975. Boats built as part of a series are not accepted in this class.

They are divided into two categories according to their sails and rigging:

• CLASS B: Classic boats with Marconi (Bermudan) sails and ketch, yawl, or schooner rigging. • CLASS C: Classic boats with Marconi sails and sloop or cutter rigging.

Vintage or classic boats more than 25 meters long. A minimum of three boats must enter to form a group.

TYPES OF VESSELS

Sloop: A single-masted vessel normally rigged fore and aft with mainsail and jib. These small, swift sailing vessels were used by navies to carry military orders from one ship to another.

Cutter: A vessel with a single mast located some two-thirds of the way from the transom with a sail plan of mainsail and two jibs.

Yawl: A two-masted vessel with either Bermuda or gaff-rigged sails. The main mast is stepped at the center and the mizzenmast, which is very small, is located at the stern behind the ship’s wheel.

Ketch: A vessel with two masts equipped with Bermuda or Marconi rigs (triangular sails) or, alternatively, with gaff-rigged sails (trape-zoidal sails).

Goleta or Schooner: A sailing boat with two or more masts rigged with different types of sails. On a double-masted schooner, the mainmast is located on the stern aft of the ship’s wheel and is ta-ller than the foremast, which is stepped in the bows, in the forward 30 percent of the boat. These two masts may be of equal height, but the one in the stern always takes the mainsail and the one in the bows, the foresail. The sails originally hoisted on this type of ship were gaff-rigged, also known as Gaff sails, although many crews preferred Bermuda rig sails.

Gaff-rigged or gaff: trapezoidal sail (generally the mainsail).

Bermuda or Marconi: triangular sail.

Mizzen: “driver” sail or stern mast on a yawl or ketch.

Jib: generic name for all cutter and triangular sails that are joined together or in a stay on the foremast, which is to say that they extend from the head of the foremast to the jib boom or bowsprit.

The international 12M rule is based on a formula that determines a particular vessel’s category and takes into account its length at the waterline.

THE 12-METER FORMULA:

12= L + 2D + √S – F2.37

A sailboat in the 12-meter class measures 20 and 23 meters in actual length and its displacement can be anywhere between 20 and 25 tons. The maximum height of its mast is set at 26 meters and its total sail area works out to between 180 and 190 square meters. The average 12-meter yacht is manned by a crew of 14.

Twelve-meter yachts are divided into five categories: Grand Prix, Modern, Traditio-nal, Vintage and Antique, which are each defined as follows:

• Vintage (Vintage & Antique): sailboats constructed before the Second World War with wooden hulls and a luxurious inte-rior fitted out with cabins, a living area, a kitchen, and a bathroom.

• Modern (Grand Prix, Modern & Traditio-nal): sailboats designed and built after 1958 specifically for the America’s Cup competi-tion thanks to a modification of the rules, and often built with modern materials and cutting-edge technology.
