Getting StartedBefore placing an activity in your listening center, familiarize studentswith the targeted fluency skill. Introduce the specific skill and explainhow it can be used to improve students’ fluency and comprehension.

• Phrasing in Sentences — Fluent readers group words together intomeaningful phrases, taking a small pause after each phrase. Thishelps listeners understand what is being read.

• Phrasing with Commas in a Series — Fluent readers take shortpauses for the commas that separate items in a series so the wordsdon’t run together.

• Phrasing in Paragraphs — Fluent readers read paragraphs in asmooth, natural way. They take short pauses after meaningfulphrases and longer pauses after sentences.

• Put It All Together — When reading aloud, fluent readers use theirknowledge of phrasing to make the passage interesting and easy forlisteners to understand. They take short pauses after phrases andbetween items in a series. They take slightly longer pausesbetween sentences in a paragraph.

Finally, make sure students understand how to work at the center.Prompt them to check the number in the top right corner of the activi-ty card to be certain that they have the correct one. Explain that theyshould listen carefully and follow all of the instructions on the record-ing. Point out that, after students answer the questions, the recordingwill provide the answers so they can correct their own work. Then, send small groups to your listening center to complete the activity.

Meeting Individual NeedsELLWrite simple sentences on the board, using vocabulary that is familiar tostudents. Work as a group to add slash marks to show phrasing.

Reteach/Extra SupportPre-teach this skill by copying sentences from the cards to the board.Read aloud, pausing to have students insert slash marks as needed.

ChallengeInvite students to become “reading buddies” for students who needmore help. Provide fun poems or short stories for the partners to echoread. The more fluent reader reads the material first, and the otherchild repeats it.
