Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, is located approximately 862 kilometres south of

Bangkok. Its limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil broad bays and tropi-

cal in-land forests contribute to making it Thailand’s most popular island. It’s one of

the most renowned diving regions in the world, enjoying a tropical climate with an

average water temperature of 24º C (78º F) and an unmatched variety of aquatic

life.

The southern beaches of the island offer superb vistas and some of the most glori-

ous sunsets in the world. Many of the best hotels and restaurants in Phuket and

some of the most beautiful beaches in the world are located here. The southern

coastline is blessed with magnificent mountains covered with lush jungle forest that

Phuket town is well located for teaching positions, with many schools, polytechnics

Phuket town, minutes walk from the bus terminal, shopping areas and old Phuket

The course is full-time over 4 weeks. Course hours are: Monday, Tuesday and

Wednesday - 10 am to 5 pm with one hour for lunch, Thursday and Friday - 10 am to

1 pm followed by teaching your 1 hour class during the afternoon. Teaching practice

starts at 2 pm every Thursday and Friday. When you arrive, you will be given a de-

tailed course timetable and your teaching practice schedule.

EBC JOB SUPPORT TRAVEL DOCUMENTS FOR THAILAND

Are you already in Thailand? If you are, ignore this section.

Your passport

Make sure that your passport will have at least 6 months life left on it when you

travel to Thailand. If it doesn't, you will have problems.

Tourist visa

Visitors to Thailand from the United Kingdom, North America, Australia and New

Zealand can stay in Thailand for a maximum of 30 days without a visa. This can easily

be extended (once only, for 10 days) at the Phuket branch of the Immigration Divi-

sion. Citizens from all other countries should contact their local Thai consulate to

obtain current travel regulations.

We recommended that you apply for a Tourist Visa allowing you to stay for sixty

days. This can be extended for an additional thirty days at the discretion of the Thai

Immigration Office.

Check with your country's Thai embassy or consulate to find out what your specific

entry requirements are to cover the 28 day TESOL TEFL course period.

Before you send a deposit you must check with your nearest Thai embassy or consu-

late as to exactly what you need to do in order to apply for a tourist visa to enter

Thailand. In order to take the course you must have a tourist visa that will allow you

to stay in Thailand for 5 weeks. Make sure you have your visa BEFORE you send your

deposit.

Holders of Tourist Visas are required to enter the country within ninety days of the

visa being issued.

If you want to apply for a student visa that will allow you to stay in Thailand for up

to one year, this can be arranged if you take a Thai language course.

The TEFL course and Thai language course are given in the Phuket training centre.

The Thai course is very reasonably priced and is arranged through our partner

school in Phuket.

The advantage of doing a combined course is that you can apply for a student visa

which allows you to stay in Thailand for up to a year.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?

Mandatory

Your passport with your visa stamp with at least 6 months left to run on it (with

a visa if you need one – refer to the visa section for more information).

A round-trip or onward travel ticket if you aren't already in Thailand. If you

arrive only with a one-way ticket and passport control asks to see your return

ticket, they will force you to buy a return ticket on the spot. This will be very

expensive. The chances of this happening are unlikely but not impossible so

play it safe.

If you have a degree, a copy of your transcripts (official or unofficial) or a copy

of your degree certificate.

Laptop computer - Check that it is wireless B/G compatible. We give you the

WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?

There are no specific dress rules when you attend class, but we ask that you respect

your peers and the fact that you are a visitor in another country.

There are specific dress requirements for teaching practice sessions that conform

with the local working and professional culture. You are expected to dress smart

casual as per the following guidelines.

Women

Shoulders should be covered (blouses with sleeves). No low-cut necklines or very

short skirts. Bare midriffs must not be visible, even when lifting arms up. Open-toed

shoes are acceptable, but no hiking boots, sneakers/trainers or beach sandals.

Long pants/trousers. NO jeans. Short or long-sleeved shirts with a collar (a tie is not

required). Loafers or dress shoes are acceptable (no sandals, hiking boots or sneak-

ers/trainers). Long hair should be tied back.

Other wardrobe planning should be based on the seasonal temperatures mentioned

in the Local Weather Conditions section shown later in this document.

ARRIVING: AIRPORT TO DOWNTOWN TRANSPORTATION

AIRPORT PICKUP FOR ALL ATTENDEES WHO HAVE BOOKED ACCOMMODATION

Once you have applied for the course, been accepted and paid your deposit, the

course centre will ask you to send your travel plans once you have them finalised.

Please send your arrival details as soon as you have them and also at least one week

prior to your scheduled arrival time.

Bus

Airport Bus provides transportation service between Phuket Town and the Phuket

International Airport. At the Airport, the Bus stops directly at the Departure Termi-

nal. The service runs from 9 am until 8 pm and takes about 80 minutes to get to

downtown Phuket. Prices vary from 30 to 100 Baht depending on your destination.

Taxis

There is a taxi stand outside the main building. Official taxis are red and yellow.

MAKE SURE the driver turns his meter on. If you do not you will end up with an ugly

scene bargaining and haggling for a price. An average fare from the airport to Phu-

ket is 400 Baht and YOU HAVE TO pay a fee of 100 baht on top of the taxi-meter fare

as a tip. DO NOT use any other taxis because they are not official and therefore are

NOT insured.

Don't delay looking for a job until you start running out of your savings. The best

have a work permit or not.

WHAT IS THE AVERAGE SALARY FOR AN ENGLISH TEACHER?

The average salary in Phuket is about 30,000 to 40,000 Baht per month. This varies

depending on what type of school or company you work for and whether you work

full or part-time. We do not recommend that you accept less than 25,000 baht per

month unless the school is also throwing in some other incentives like free language

lessons.

HOW MANY EBC GRADUATES REALLY FIND WORK IN THAILAND?

Local transportation

Phuket is a great place to see on foot, but there is also local transportation.

The easiest ways to make your way around the island are via motorbike taxi or tuk-

tuk (a small truck-like taxi). When hiring a taxi always negotiate and agree to a price

before accepting the ride. There is a local bus network that circles the island; howev-

er, it is very slow and unreliable. Cars and motorcycles are available for hire locally.

Drinking water

Tap water is deemed unsafe to drink in Thailand; therefore you should only drink

bottled water during your stay. Bottled water is very inexpensive and readily availa-

ble in the school and throughout the island. Ice in hotels and restaurants is always

purified and therefore safe.

Shopping

All types of shopping facilities exist on the island - from international supermarkets

and department stores to small shops selling local handicrafts and markets selling

fresh produce. No doubt you will find plenty to buy in Phuket!

COMMON-SENSE WARNING: Shopping areas are always full of tourists and there-

fore pick-pockets so watch your purse or wallet.

Beaches and swimming

Phuket has some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches in the world. The aver-

age water temperature is 24º C (78º F). There’s an abundance of water-sports to

choose from.

Local weather conditions

Thailand has a tropical climate that does not follow the traditional four seasons.

Daily temperatures are usually between 24º C and 34º C (75º F and 90º F).

The rainy season runs from May to October inclusive.

QUESTIONS ABOUT LVING IN PHUKET

What are the average housing and living expenses when working in Thailand?

Most likely you will rent a room in an apartment or house with other teachers or

with Thais, and of course it depends on where you choose to live. A pleasant, small 2

to 3 bedroom house in Phuket is about 8,000 to 10,000 baht per month. Apartments

are available for less.

It is fair to say that TEFL teachers are well-paid by local standards in Thailand, which

means they can afford a comfortable standard of living. A local (Thai) teacher in

Thailand earns around 6,000 to 8,000 Baht (about 130 - 180 dollars) while a TEFL

teacher at the same school can expect to earn 40,000 baht - about $US1,000 per

month. While this may not sound a lot by international standards, it means you can

live comfortably in Thailand.

How much money should I bring?

You should budget to spend between 250 Dollars (Spartan life) to 500 Dollars (good

life) for the period covering the 28 day course. If you want to stay and work in Phu-

ket or the rest of Thailand you should budget between 500 to 1,000 Dollars to cover

finding apartments in Phuket and living expenses until you get your first pay-check.

Do schools provide work permits?

Your school should help you secure a work permit. In order to apply initially, you get

the job offer in writing from your future employer, along with copies of his business

registration and Ministry of Education documents. You then leave the country and go to

the nearest Thai consulate. Most people go to Penang in Malaysia. The next day you

collect your non-immigrant B visa which you use to come back into Thailand. It is then

converted to a work permit after a considerable amount of paperwork is completed.

What if I get sick in Phuket?

If you find yourself requiring medical attention, Phuket has a number of very good hos-

pitals and clinics with well-educated, helpful doctors. There are also plenty of pharma-

cies .

If you decide to get a job in Thailand and start paying Thai income tax, you are entitled

to Social Security, which gives you medical cover at a local specified hospital. However,

we do recommend that you get private health insurance before you travel.
