Phyllis Wheatley one of America’s most profound writers, has contributed greatly to American Literature, but not only as a writer but as an African American Woman who has influenced many African Americans by enriching their knowledge of and exposure to their African American Heritage and Literature. Her literary gifts, intelligence, and poetry were a striking example to her English and American Audience. She most like many authors, wrote about what she knew or experienced. Phyllis believed that the power of poetry is immeasurable.

She is known to use three different elements to create and make her poetry meaningful such as using Christianity, Classicism, and Hierophantic Solar Worship. Over one-third of her poems consist of elegies, the remainder being on religious, classical and abstract themes and she rarely mention her own situation in her poems. She soon collected enough poems to include in a book, with Phyllis Wheatley publication in 1774 of her book, Poems on Various Subjects and Religious and Moral. She became the most famous African Woman.

Phyllis Wheatley’s contribution to literature is important. She proved to have an intellect matching or superior to many of those considered her superiors. She also wrote in a style controlled by rigid boundaries. Her poetry is widely regarded as being exceptionally mature. Phyllis ability to practice her art in the deprived social environment in which she lived makes her poetry worth studying for exceptional accomplishments in such circumstances.
