Oedipus Complex

• The name of the Oedipus complex derives from the Greek myth

where Oedipus, a young man, kills his father and marries hismother. Upon discovering this he pokes his eyes out and ecomeslind. This Oedipal is the generic !i.e. general" term for othOedipus and #lectra complexes.

• $n the young oy, the Oedipus complex or more correctly, conflict,arises ecause the oy develops sexual !pleasurale" desires forhis mother. %e wants to possess his mother exclusively and get ridof his father to enale him to do so. $rrationally, the oy thinks that ifhis father were to find out aout all this, his father would take awaywhat he loves the most. &uring the phallic stage what the oy lovesmost is his penis. %ence the oy develops castration anxiety.

• 'or girls, the Oedipus or #lectra complex is less thansatisfactory. (riefly, the girl desires the father, utreali)es that she does not have a penis. This leads tothe development of penis envy and the wish to e a oy.

• The girl resolves this y repressing her desire for herfather and sustituting the wish for a penis with the wishfor a ay. The girl lames her mother for her *castratedstate* and this creates great tension. The girl thenrepresses her feelings !to remove the tension" and

identifies with the mother to take on the female genderrole.
