Coastwest Grants Program

Western Australian Planning Commission and the Australian Government’s Caring for Our Country

Western Australia’s coastal environments have unique and diverse values, and face a range of difficult challenges including the effects of climate change, population growth, competing uses and degradation.

The annual Coastwest grants support projects designed as a response to these challenges, which improve the condition and amenity of these coastal environments. Grants are provided to community groups to work in partnership with coastal managers in on ground coastal and marine rehabilitation, restoration and preventative conservation projects.

The grants also look to build the skills and capacity of Western Australian communities and to encourage and maintain their involvement in coastal and natural resource management.

Coastwest is open for grant applications from 4 July 2011 and will close at 5pm, Thursday 29 September 2011. Successful applications will be announced at the end of 2011.

Big Ideas

Lotterywest

Some ideas are particularly out of the ordinary. They might provide enjoyment for large numbers of people, help to bring about important change, or create a major community asset.

The number of grants Lotterywest provides for big ideas tends to be small, though the range varies enormously. Regardless of their diversity, grants typically:

- Have strong community support; - Offer widespread community involvement; - Provide significant, enduring impact; - Are unique, often world-class; - Attract major support from a number of sources (whether financial or in-

kind); and - Involve partnership between government, community and the private

sector.

As grants for big ideas can be complex, Lotterywest needs to be involved from the outset.

Grants for big ideas typically fall into one of the following three areas:

4. Community assets 5. Major events 6. Large scale projects

These grants are available to not-for-profit organisations and local government authorities.

Applications can be made at any time.

National Coaching Scholarship Program

Australian Sports Commission

This program’s main objective is to provide opportunities for potential and current elite coaches to develop skills and knowledge to coach effectively in high performance programs.

The scholarship program is administered by the ASC's Sports Coach and Official Section in partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and national sporting organisations. The scholarships provide potential high performance coaches with a structured, intensive learning program over a two year period.

Scholarship coaches are generally placed within an AIS, or state institute/academy of sport program. The head coaches of these programs act as a mentor to the scholarship coach and assist them to develop a comprehensive understanding of elite athletes and the programs in which they train and compete.

To complement the practical learning, scholarship coaches undertake an educational component which may include postgraduate coaching qualifications or other appropriate courses.

If you would like to apply for a scholarship please contact your national sporting organisation.

Department of Sport and Recreation

The Organisational Sustainability Program (OSP) was developed to refine the way in which the department works with key organisations in the WA sport and recreation industry to enable them to meet the challenges they face. It is about assisting organisations to make the most efficient use of their resources to enable them to be adaptable, meet the expectations of their members and be valued by the West Australian community. DSR aims to do this by working with organisations to enable the best practice governance, management and human resource structures and processes required to create a high performance organisation. The Department will invest in the strategic intent and operational plans of the organisation rather than providing funding for specific programs. As such, organisations will be given three-year funding agreements to encourage longer term planning.

Localised Enhancement Projects

Office of Energy

Localised Enhancement Projects provide local governments with an opportunity to apply for funding to beautify streetscapes and traffic routes that are recognised as having scenic, tourism or heritage value.

They are intended to replace around 1,000 metres of overhead distribution power lines with underground supply in each project. To date, 30 LEPs are either in progress or have been completed throughout Western Australia.

Localised Enhancement Projects form part of the State Underground Power Program which is a partnership between the Western Australian Government, Western Power, Horizon Power and participating local governments.

The costs of replacing existing overhead power lines are shared, with the State Government providing 50 per cent of the cost of each project up to a maximum limit of $500,000.

On 30 August 2011, the Minister for Energy released guidelines for Localised Enhancement Projects Round 5. Local governments are now invited to submit proposals.
