Research Council Forum Panel Presentation 1:30pm - 2:15pm, May 17 Garibaldi A
Bodies, Performances and Health: What's happening in physical and health education
Within the complex nature of teaching and learning in physical and health education,Tinning has observed that “the body is a central focus of (H)PE” (2014, p. 207) that is toooften reduced to a binary model of thinking and acting removing the embodiment thatarises within the field. These dichotomous understandings of fit/unfit, healthy/unhealthy,fat/thin, strong/weak lead to exclusionary practices that occur both subtly and explicitly inPHE classrooms. In considering how teachers are both trained and experienced in deliveringmaterial focused on improving the health of the population what transpires in and throughthe lived realities of classroom practices, the intentions of curricular documents, and thebroader societal settings shaping health messaging are three important areas of discussiontaken up within this panel. This panel illustrates the patterns that dominate theperformative expectations about bodies and health in education and society to providecounterpoints for blurring the boundaries between ‘goodness’ and ‘badness’ using a varietyof theoretical perspectives (i.e. critical race theory, critical Indigenous studies, currere, andBernstein’s horizontal and vertical hierarchies to explore how bodies and bodily relationsare engaged with, or ignored, in a subject area designed to foster wellness. The discussantfor this panel, Dr. Norman Moss (UBC), will address the centrality of the body andmovement from the papers and invite discussion for how movement forward might propelus beyond the binary components that can come to dominate physical and healtheducation.
