PHYSICS AT CITY COLLEGEAre you curious, unconventional and ambitious? Do you accept nothing unchallenged and like to ask the whys and hows for everything? Are you intrigued about faraway galaxies and quantum particles? If yes, then you have what it takes to become a physics major at the City College of New York.

Physicists in the 21st century sail out for a great adventure that reaches the very limits of the universe as we know it. From subatomic particles to the structure of the cosmos, an array of challenges and opportunities open up for those with the skills and imagination to explore the frontiers of the physical world. A course of studies in physics will make you an insider in all the excitement and will leave you with the knowledge, skills and intellectual confidence to excel in physics or anything else under the sun!

e Physics Department of the City College of New York offers an exciting range of options and possibilities for undergraduate studies. Our students receive an education and hands-on research experience that is second to none and are launched into outstanding scientific or professional careers.

THE CHOICE OF THE SMART AND AMBITIOUS

World-class educationA renowned faculty of dedicated teachers and active researchers instruct and guide our students through a wide selection of high-quality courses at all levels. State-of-the-art experimental facilities provide training and opportunities for student involvement in research projects.

Individual attentionA student-to-faculty ratio of better than one-to-one affords a close, personal-ized mentoring and guidance of each student. Small, honors-level course sections offer extra depth and challenge to the driven. e Physics Club, where physics students socialize, interact and learn from each other’s experience, complements the informal atmosphere between faculty and students.

Flexibilitye Physics Department offers tracks of study that focus on a variety of areas of interest, from the theoretical to the applied. Students have the possibility to tailor their stream of courses according to their own interests and ambitions. is can lead to “flex majors” that prepare them for a wide range of careers or cross-disciplinary work, such as biophysics, education, patent law, engineering physics and financial physics.

OpportunityLow tuition rates and an extensive program of financial aid and scholarships open the gate of opportunity to students of all backgrounds. e City College

has been a virtual “dream machine” in taking students and catapulting them to the full range of their ambition. e Physics Department produces some of the most sought-after graduates with an excellent record of virtually immediate employment.

Student LifeSituated in the heart of Manhattan, the City College campus is immersed in the endless cultural possibilities of the City. Whether you live in our brand-new student residences or out of campus, a wide palette of ethnic neighborhoods and a virtual infinity of musical and artistic events, exhibitions, cafés and night-life are just a step away. Between interacting with faculty and other students, participating in student organizations and governance, thinking about physics or simply living the city life, there is no dull moment for a physics student!

RECENT GRADEder Izaguirre immigrated to New York Cityat the age of 16, leaving behind his mother and his native Honduras. He had the will and desire to study, but very little means.

“I could not have afforded any of the expensive private schools in the area. At City College Ihave been fortunate to find great physics professors who gave me a top-level education and inspired me to pursue my dreams,” Eder says. “My fellow students were also a wonderful bunch and we have formed close bonds and a friendly competition that helped me keep high standards.”

Eder graduated with honors in Physics and became the 2007 Valedictorian for the entire City College. His dream is to do theoretical research on elementary particles and cosmology.

Jonathan Maltz grew up in a Brooklyn family of modest means. He was always curious aboutgadgets and figured he would grow up to bean engineer. His true calling, however, was revealed after he came to City College.

“e desire to study the universe was always in me. What City College gave me was discipl-ine, self-respect, and an exciting environment that showed me what it is to practice science,” Jonathan says. “e Physics Department has practically been my home and almost every professor inspired me in some way. e camaraderie among students was extraordinary. City College made me the person I am today.”

Jonathan graduated with honors in Physics and added a major in Mathematics

and a minor in Chemistry on the way! His ambition is to do research in theoretical physics and mathematics.

Eder and Jonathan will see a lot of each other in the coming years. ey both received a full scholarship from Stanford University, where as graduate students they will pursue their passion for studying the mysteries of the universe. Way to go, guys!

Gennady Khirich (…some personal stuff thatI am missing). After one year in another school,he transferred to City College and became a physics student.

“Transferring to City College was the best decision I have ever made in my life. e facu-lty of the physics department took me seriouslyand devoted a lot of time to make sure that I was comfortable with the material,” Gennady says. “ey are all very strong players in their disciplines and gave me a very good foundation in physics and an incredible opportunity to do research in the lab of my choice.”

Gennady graduated with a specialization in biophysics. He is going to Yale, where he received a scholarship to pursue graduate studies in biochemistry. Great going, Gennady!

Laryssa Rybak grew up in Astoria and Yonkers. She was accepted to several Ivy League schools, but two years at another college made her reali-ze that engineering was not her calling. She took a year off to work full-time in theater and find out what made her tick.

Eventually, she returned to full-time studies by becoming a physics student at City College.

“Studying at City fired up my interest and drive,” Laryssa says. “I took a very broad range of courses and did a lot of exciting lab work. I was intrigued by quantum information and thought I would do graduate work on it, but was also interested in the world around me.”

Laryssa graduated in Physics with a Math minor. e real world beckoned her, and she is now applying her skills in finance, working for Credit Suisse. Good for them, Laryssa!
