All matter within the universe is made from atoms.Atomic structure:• The simplest atom known is that of hydrogen, it consists
of 2 subatomic particles; a proton and an electron.• All other atoms have a 3rd sub-atomic particle known as
a neutron.• Protons and neutrons form the nucleus of the atom and
are known as nucleons.• The electrons orbit the nucleus and are not attached
directly to it. They are held in place primarily by theelectrostatic force produced by the positively chargedprotons attracting the negatively charged electrons.

Atomic number:• All atoms have a specific atomic number and this is
based on the number of protons in the nucleus.• For example, naturally occurring carbon has 6 protons
forming part of its nucleus and therefore has an atomicnumber of 6.
Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 6
![Page 7: Physics For Medical Imagingkarary.edu.sd/site/assets/files/21814/01_physics_for... · 2020. 11. 5. · Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 2. All matter within the universe is made from atoms](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022071302/60af4f05a6aa4976a62ef0c0/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Mass number:• The mass number is the total number of protons and
neutrons that form the nucleus.• As electrons have negligible weight they are not
included in the mass number.• The commonest form of carbon consists of 6 protons and
6 neutrons and therefore has a mass number of 12. Thisnatural form of carbon is referred to as ‘carbon 12’.

Binding Energy:• The binding energy of an electron is that amount of
energy which is required to remove the electron from itsatom and such an event will leave an atom which hasbeen ionized.
Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 8
![Page 9: Physics For Medical Imagingkarary.edu.sd/site/assets/files/21814/01_physics_for... · 2020. 11. 5. · Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 2. All matter within the universe is made from atoms](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022071302/60af4f05a6aa4976a62ef0c0/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
The binding energy of an electron is determined by:1. The number of protons in the nucleus of the atom (i.e. its
atomic number)2. The proximity of any electron to its nucleus (i.e. the
orbit it sits in).
Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 9
![Page 10: Physics For Medical Imagingkarary.edu.sd/site/assets/files/21814/01_physics_for... · 2020. 11. 5. · Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 2. • Every electron in any given shell of a specific atom willhave the same binding energy. For example, the bindingenergy of K shell electrons in tungsten (W) is always69.5keV and L shell electrons in tungsten always have abinding energy of 10.2keV.
• In short, the binding energy of any electron is notdetermined by the electron itself but rather, it is afunction of the atomic number of the atom and theenergy orbital (or shell) in which the electron exists.

Atomic symbols and the periodic table:• Every atom known is included on a table known as the
periodic table.• Each type of atom has its own letters (symbol)
accompanied by the atomic number and mass number.• If we consider carbon once again this will be written as:
This is also known as a ‘nuclide’.
Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 11
![Page 12: Physics For Medical Imagingkarary.edu.sd/site/assets/files/21814/01_physics_for... · 2020. 11. 5. · Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 2. Atomic balance:
• In any given atom it is common for there to be the samenumber of electrons, collectively, within the electronshells as there are protons in the nucleus. This is knownas an electrically balanced atom.
• But what happens if the nucleus and the electronshells become imbalanced electrically?
Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 12
![Page 13: Physics For Medical Imagingkarary.edu.sd/site/assets/files/21814/01_physics_for... · 2020. 11. 5. · Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 2. • if an atom gains an electron (which is a relativelycommon occurrence for some atoms), it is referred to asa negatively charged atom, also known as a negative ionor an anion (because it is attracted to a positiveelectrode or anode);
• if an atom loses an electron (again, relatively common) itleaves a positively charged atom, known as a positiveion or a cation (pronounced cat-ion), because it isattracted to a cathode.
• An ion therefore is an atom in which there is anelectrical imbalance between its nucleus and electronorbits.

Force, Work, Energy
and Power
Force:• Is defined as the ability to move a stationary body OR to
increase/ decrease the speed of a moving body.• It’s unit of measure is the newton (N).• 1 newton = 1 kg x m/s2• The Newton is therefore the amount of force required to
move a mass of 1kg at an acceleration rate of I meter persecond, per second.
Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 14
![Page 15: Physics For Medical Imagingkarary.edu.sd/site/assets/files/21814/01_physics_for... · 2020. 11. 5. · Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 2. Work: • Is effectively done if the object is moved. If a force of 1
newton was need to move an object over 1 metre thenthis would equate to 1 joule of work done.
• The unit of measure is the joule (J).• 1 joule = 1 newton x 1 metre
Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 15
![Page 16: Physics For Medical Imagingkarary.edu.sd/site/assets/files/21814/01_physics_for... · 2020. 11. 5. · Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 2. Energy: • Is effectively the same as work in that it equates to the
ability to do work and uses the same unit of measure thejoule.
• However, it is quoted in two ways, potential and kineticenergy.
• Potential Energy (PE) is the amount of energy which abody is capable of emitting.
• Kinetic Energy (KE) is the amount of energy actuallybeing used at the time, ie the work being done during theactivity.
Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 16
![Page 17: Physics For Medical Imagingkarary.edu.sd/site/assets/files/21814/01_physics_for... · 2020. 11. 5. · Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 2. Power: • Is derived by the rate at which energy is used.• It is measured in two ways either as joules per second or
as watts, 1 joules per second (J/s) is the same as 1 watt(W).
Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 17
![Page 18: Physics For Medical Imagingkarary.edu.sd/site/assets/files/21814/01_physics_for... · 2020. 11. 5. · Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 2. • All atoms are in constant motion and because of thisthey possess kinetic energy. Heat as a form of energy isalso measured in joules.
• Different materials such as solids, liquids or gases haveslightly different amounts of motion depending on theirchemical structure. Anything that increases the amountof motion will lead to an increase in kinetic energy andeffectively to an increase in temperature.

Transfer of Heat:• There are 3 forms of heat transfer; conduction,
convection and radiation.1. Conduction:• Requires the atoms to be very tightly packed together
and as such is the dominant form of heat transfer forsolids but conduction does occur in liquids and to alesser extent even gases.
2. Convection:• Heat transfer occurs when a current or flow of heat is
created inside the material which is why it is restricted to liquids and gases.
Dr. Ahmed Alsharef Farah 19

3. Radiation:• This form of heat transfer is related to vibration of atoms
in a similar way to the other forms of heat transfer. Asthe atoms are continuously heated and given energy theyvibrate and as they do they give off pure energy as awave which has both magnetic and electrical properties.
• This type of energy is part of the electro-magneticspectrum known as infra-red radiation. As it is anelectro-magnetic wave heat transfer does not require amedium and can even occur through a vacuum or void inspace.

Waves have three main components:1. Amplitude.2. Frequency.3. Speed.
• The amplitude is the height of the wave.• The frequency relates to how quick it switches between
its lowest and highest points.• The speed is obviously how far it travels in a certain
time.

• If the pressure wave travels towards the human ear itcauses a vibration of the ear drum at the same frequencyas the source and if the frequency falls somewherebetween 20 Hertz (20 cycles per second) and 20Kilohertz KHz) we perceive this as sound. Vibrationsstill occur outside this frequency range and strike the eardrum in the same way, it is simply that it falls outside thefrequency range we are sensitive to.
• Ultrasound is used in diagnostic imaging and uses soundabove the audible range of 20 KHz and are usuallybetween 2 and 18 Megahertz (MHz).

each other and opposite poles attract.• Inside the magnet there are a series of much smaller bits
known as domains which have a north and south pole.

• In a non magnetic material these domains are randomlyarranged so the material does not have a net magneticforce as all the magnetic forces cancel each other out.
• If on the other hand we do have a magnetic material it’s
domains are arranged so they line up with their north andsouth poles in the same direction.
• Around this magnet are what is known as ‘lines ofmagnetic flux energy’, which form relatively large loopsflowing between the north and south poles.

called a current.• If a potential difference is applied in an electrical
circuit it will cause a current to flow.• The positive electrode in a circuit is known as the anode

• Electrical conductors have a liberal supply of electronsloosely bound in their outer conduction shell. Silver isthe best metal electrical conductor but copper iscommonly used due to the expense.
• Electrical insulators have all their electrons firmlybound to its molecules. Good insulators are oil, plasticsand rubber.
• The unit of electric current is the Ampere (A). Theampere (amp) may be defined:1 amp is 1 Coulomb of charge flowing per second.
• Power in an electrical sense can be determined from thecurrent (amps) and voltage (volts). The power of anelectrical circuit for X-ray production is measured inkilowatts (kW).

• Different types of electromagnetic radiation (EMR)carry energy at different frequencies and wavelengthsand this dictates their properties.
• All EMR travel in a vacuum at the speed of light (3 x108 m/s) and travel in straight lines. They comprise oftransverse variations of electrical & magnetic fields.
• All EMR carry energy and are not affected by electrical/ magnetic fields.
• As the wavelengths shorten this leads to an increasinglikelihood that they will interact with the atom causingionization.
