The measure of the fragmentation cross sections is an important information to estimate how this process modifies dose distributions and biological effectiveness.

Hadrontherapy

Simulations with analytical codes are used to deal with these problems.

Such approach presents considerable uncertainty in the models implemented because of a reduced number of experimental data, both on the

fragmentation cross sections and on the different quality of radiations biological effectiveness.

All these reasons claimed the development of NUCLEAR REACTION MODELS

Nuclear fragmentation and Models

Presentation Notes
Thank you, Mr. Chairman. It’s my great pleasure to give a talk to you. I’ll be speaking about some of the overview of the fragmentation of heavy charged particles in relation to radiotherapy.

First of all, we need to know the reaction and fragmentation cross sections and yields after shielding !!

Outer radiation fields

… we have to know the primary interaction events,i.e. particle (all generations) fluences vs. energy

Interaction of the radiation withthe spacecraft hulls, the body... Target Fragments Projectile fragments

… lower charge … lower charge than target than primaries

… high LET … mixed LET … short ranges … long ranges

Heavy ion fragmentation

Cross SectionsP + T F + X

Total reaction

σtot = σreac+ σel

The probability, P(x), for a heavy ion to undergo a nuclearinteraction in a thickness in a given target material T is given by

P(x)=1-exp(-NAσreacxρtarget/Atarget)

σreac must be known with a great accuracy !!

Page 8: Physics: Fragmentation, Dosimetry, Simulation, Modeling · The measure of the fragmentation cross sections is an important information to estimate how this process modifies dose distributions

Cross SectionsP + T F + X

Inclusive

σreac=σreac(Zproj,Aproj,Eproj,Ztarg,Atarg)

When no distinction is made as how the fragment “F” is produced, e.g. as to what comprises “X”

Includes all possible confgurations (“final states”) of particles produced and/or emitted in the reactions

E.g. charge changing cross sections

Exclusive

When there are distinctions made as how the fragment “F” isproduced, e.g. as to what comprises “X”

Semi-inclusive

When some but not all components (“final states”) of “X” are measured

Monte Carlo Codes With Fragmentation• Several possibilities:

– GEANT4 – SHIELD-HIT (Karolinska / Russian Acad. Of Sciences)– FLUKA (INFN/CERN)

Goal: Accurate estimation of fragments produced at different

energies and angles is important in order to evaluate the beam contamination.

The nucleus-nucleus interaction models should be checked and validated because responsible of the fragments yields!

It is important to know the cross section of secondary particles production at different angles and for different target materials.

In literature there is not a complete data set in the energy range of interest for carbon ion therapy (0-400 AMeV)

Contribute of the hadronic processes on the physical dose

Accurate estimation of fragments produced at different energies and angles is important in order to evaluate the contamination of the beam

The nucleus-nucleus interaction models should be checked and validatedbecause responsible of the fragments yields!

This work could contribute to the development of a Treatment Planning System (TPS) for hadrontherapy (INFN project from 2009), which must consider the different biological

effects of the secondary produced

Page 16: Physics: Fragmentation, Dosimetry, Simulation, Modeling · The measure of the fragmentation cross sections is an important information to estimate how this process modifies dose distributions

Comparison of ion inelastic models

Secondary production data for nucleus-nucleus interactions are provided by

thin and thick target experiments

Published experimental data available for ion interactions at energy range of

interest in the medical physics field (10 – 500 AMeV):

enough for neutron production (both for thin and thick target)

few (and sometimes not of good quality) in case of fragments

production

lack of experimental data!

With the collaboration of the Geant4 Hadronic WG, systematic comparisons of different ion inelastic models have been performed (in progress)

published data experiments at LNS-INFN(thin target)

It is important to know the cross section of secondary particles production at different angles and for different target materials.

• make available existing experimental information on charged-particledata interaction relevant to radiotherapy and recommend nuclear data parameterizations and evaluated data which can be used by Monte Carlo code developers and users worldwide

• define and make available recommended hadronic physics settings for Monte Carlo transport codes used in proton and ion therapy calculations.

INFN and Medicine• INFN has developed for more than 15 years

competences in the application of nuclear and particlephysics to medicine (hadron therapy, detectors,imaging...)

• A strategic project, INFN-MED, is now starting with theaim of coordinating those activities which, havingcompleted the main R&D phase, are now mature forimmediate application. 5 main areas:– Medical imaging– Detectors for diagnostics– BNCT– Accelerator systems for hadron therapy– Treatment Planning System

Aim and features of the INFN project

• Contribute to the development of innovativeTreatment Planning Systems for therapy with ionbeams (in particular 12C, but not exclusively) foractive voxel scanning applications

• To produce a well defined, certified and ready-to-use deliverable in collaboration with an industrialpartner → IBA (through associated Elekta-CMS)

• Collaboration with CNAO in Italy for testing

• Scientific collaboration with other EuropeanInstitutes for aspects concerning nuclear physicsand radiobiology
