Length is called by a different name depending on where it is measured. Some examples are:
Diameter: length across a circle
Thickness: smallest length of a rectangular blockDepth: length below the surface of the water
Width/Breadth: length of shorter side of a rectangle
The choice of instrument will depend on the following:

Choosing the right instrument for measuring length depends on: the magnitude of the length being measured.
The ranges of instruments used for measuring length are different. The maximum reading on the scale of the right instrument should be greater than the length being measured but not very much greaterFor example, to measure the diameter of a pencil (a small length) a metre ruler would not be chosen. A micrometer would be suitable instrument.

Choosing the right instrument for measuring length depends on: the location of the length being measured.
The degree of difficulty in measuring some types of length, is greater with some instruments than others.
For example, a vernier caliper can measure the diameter of a tennis ball without undue difficulty compared to a tape measure.

Which instrument would you choose to measure the inner diameter of an engagement ring?
13NEXT QUESTIONNEXT QUESTIONNEXT QUESTIONNEXT QUESTION
A. It would be difficult to measure the real diameter of the ring with a ruler.B The micrometer is designed to measure external diameters and not inner diameters.C. The tape measure would pose the same problem as a ruler.D. is correct. The upper jaws of the vernier caliper makes it suitable as well as its range makes measurement possible without undue difficulty.

17NEXT QUESTIONNEXT QUESTIONNEXT QUESTIONNEXT QUESTION
A The design of the micrometer makes it impossible to probe into the hole of the bowling ballB The range of the metre ruler is unsuitable, as well as the design/thickness of the meter rule makes unsuitable.C is correct. The depth gauge of the vernier caliper can measure the depth of narrow cavities.D The range is suitable, but the thickness of the ruler makes it unsuitable.

A is incorrect. The main scale reading immediately below the zero of the vernier scale is 1.2 cmB is correct. The main scale reading of the graduation immediately before the zero of the vernier scale is 1.2 cm and the graduations align at 3 units on the vernier scale. The diameter is therefore 1.23 cmC is incorrect. The main scale reading of the graduation immediately before the zero of the vernier scale is 1.2 cmD is incorrect. What is the thickness of a metal plate which the micrometer in the illustration is used to measure?
21
A is correct. The reading of the graduation on the sleeve immediately before the line along where the thimble meets the sleeve is 4.00 mm. The scale line coincides with 44 units on the thimble scale. The thickness of the plate is 4.00 + 0.44 = 4.44 mm
B is incorrect. The scale line coincides with 44 units on the thimble scale and not 46 units
C is incorrect. The reading of the graduation on the sleeve immediately before the line along where the thimble meets the sleeve is 4.00 mm
D is incorrect. The reading of the graduation on the sleeve immediately before the line along where the thimble meets the sleeve is 4.00 mm
