Danilo IervolinoMultiversity Holding PresidentUniversità Telematica PegasoPresident

Today the world rewards the oneswho drive innovation and conquernew horizons, supports those whohave the ability to connect peopleand lead them to realise big dreams.

It is no longer time for cautious words, measured gestures, restrained poli-cies, or the paths that others havetraced. Today is the time of rebirth, ofnew social and economic frontiers; offree, creative and powerful initiatives.

It’s the beginning of a new era inwhich the first rule is to fly high.

Luigia MelilloPegaso International RectorHead of UNESCO Unit of the EuropeanCenter for Bioethics and Quality of LifeDirector of CELL, UniPegaso-EMUNI

Pegaso International’s great chal-lenge arises from Malta, thanks to itsstrategic political and cultural func-tion in the Euro-Mediterranean area.We aim to build and disseminate aplatform of knowledge under a globalperspective, investing more in educa-tion, in basic training and in life-longlearning with a focus on the needs ofthe future.

Our digital technologies can fosterequality of opportunities and ensuresocial integration. It is only by creatingalternatives to migration and there-

fore compatible conditions in local development by enhancing education, training, employment and social welfare that, we create a fertile ground fordialogue and peace.

Education is necessary but not suffi-cient. To run routes of daily life, whereknowledge helps you in turning diffi-culties into opportunities and obsta-cles into motivations for developmentand growth, you should learn how toact and how to be.

Gavin GuliaChairman of the MaltaTourism AuthorityFormer Minister for Justice and Labour

The Valletta City is a cultural, artis-tic and historical centre, with theprivileged status of world heritagegranted by UNESCO a long time ago.

‘Hospitality is our strength, combinedwith authenticity and tradition.’ Cul-tural tourism has indeed been a ma-jor focus for the tourism industry as awhole. Thanks to the PIConference,we give a value added to the con-struction of networks of cultural di-alogue and mobility in the Mediter-ranean Area.

  • About World Bioethics Day

On 24th June 2001 UNESCO Chair in Bioethics was established in the personof Amnon Carmi in that time Rector of the International Center of Health,Law and Ethics, University of Haifa. The purpose of the Chair is to coordinateand stimulate an International Network of Institutes for Medical Ethics Train-ing (NIMED), associating higher education institutes in both the developedand developing countries, and to develop an up-to-date syllabus for medi-cal ethics education which will satisfy the requirements of medical schools inthe world.

Every year, the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics celebrates the World BioethicsDay (WBD) on October 19th, through a variety of activities (e.g. Interna-tional Competitions, awareness campaigns). Students attending the highschool are invited to participate in this event as well and they will be en-gaged in different kinds of competitions: essay, poetry, photography, scien-tific and artistic posters, drawing and short films.

This year World Bioethics Day will celebrate article 12th of Universal Declara-tion on Bioethics and Human Rights dedicated to Respect for Cultural Diver-sity. The importance of cultural diversity and pluralism must be given properemphasis. However, these considerations must not invoke the violation of re-spect for human dignity, human rights and fundamental freedoms, nor theprinciples established in this Declaration, as well as to limit its goals.

Miroslava Vasinova, President of European Centre for Bioethics and Qualityof Life – UNESCO Chair in Bioethics Italian Unit and Luigia Melillo, Director ofInternational Research Office for Lifelong Learning Bioethics Education ofthe Italian Unit decided to celebrate the fourth edition of WBD in this currentyear in Malta on the occasion of PIConference dedicated to Social Inclu-sion, Education and Digital Society.

A special day is organised in three moments:

    • the opening lecture on Thriving for Inclusive Society,• lectio magistralis Beyond Ethical Policies held buy Marie-Louise Coleiro

Preca, rewarded as Unesco active member for her mission of solidaritywith the most vulnerable people in the world,

    • a panel discussion among academic representatives of many Africanand European countries about Policies and Ethics of Social Inclusion:Cultural Diversity.
