PIA's first Boeing 720-040B, AP-AMG, photographed during pre-delivery test flight in December 1961. AP-AMG was delivered to PIA on December 21, 1961 and introduced on Dacca-Karachi-Tehran-Geneva-Frankfurt-London route in

February 1962. Incidentally, AP-AMG on its delivery flight to Karachi on January 2, 1962, piloted by PIA's ace Captain Abdullah Baig, broke the world record for

the London-Karachi non-stop flight time. With representatives of FAI (Federation Aeronautique International) on board to monitor the official timings, AP-AMG completed the flight in 6 hours 43 minutes and 55 seconds, the record

which to this day remains unbroken!! This achievement symbolized the fledgling Pakistani airline's fighting spirit and urge to reach the top. PIA

operated AP-AMG until 1974 when it was leased (later sold) to Air Malta as 9H-AAM. The island airline continued flying B720s until 1989, but this particular aircraft (AP-AMG) was retired in 1981 and later used for fire practice at Luqa

Airport, Malta

From Switzerland's Zurich-Kloten Airport, here's a series of beautiful photos of PIA Airbus A310-308 (registration AP-BEU) taken by Peter Frei on December 11,

2003. In this photo you can see AP-BEU on taxiway Romeo after overnight parking at Zurich-Kloten Airport. Peter took this photo at 08:23 AM, about two

minutes after sunrise

Airbus A310-308  (Copyright © Peter Frei)

Here is the second photo of AP-BEU taken by Peter at Zurich-Kloten Airport on December 11, 2003. This photo was taken at 08:24 AM, when AP-BEU taxied head-on on taxiway Romeo. After years of absence, a PIA aircraft was finally seen again at Zurich, in the shape of this Airbus A310-308. The reason for its

visit was actually that Geneva Airport lacked parking space for it. It brought the Pakistani delegation led by Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali to the

World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) held at Geneva in Switzerland. After unloading at Geneva, the aircraft flew to Zurich in the evening of

December 9, 2003, arriving here in complete darkness. On the morning of December 11, 2003 it ferried back to Geneva to pick-up the delegation

Page 42: PIA History In Pics

This is the third photo of AP-BEU taken by Peter at Zurich-Kloten Airport on the morning of December 11, 2003. This beautiful photo shows AP-BEU passing the

rising sun. What you can see on the ground is not snow, but ripe from a cold, clear night. At this time the aircraft had still only been partially been de-iced.

The crew was hurrying as it was anxious not to be in Geneva in time to pick up the delegation headed by Pakistan's Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali.

Full de-icing was later done en-route to the runway. Remember, the flight to Geneva is just 300 km, or about 25-30 minutes

Here is the fourth photo of AP-BEU taken by Peter at Zurich-Kloten Airport on December 11, 2003. The photo shows AP-BEU during take-off from runway 28

of Zurich-Kloten Airport. As you can see it was lifting-off early and climbed away very steeply, which is no wonder as the aircraft was empty. This photo

was taken at 08:42 AM, about 20 minutes after sunrise

Lockheed L-1049C Super Constellation  (Abbas Ali Collection)

This photo was taken on February 1, 1954 when Pakistan's ambassador to the United States was invited to officially accept the delivery of PIA's first Super

Constellation (AP-AFQ). With the delivery of AP-AFQ to PIA, Pakistan became the first Asian land country and the first Muslim country to fly the Super

Constellation. Six-and-a-half year old Sharon Owen - who is exactly the same age as Pakistan, born on August 14, 1947 - acted as honorary stewardess, helping show off the plane to the official party. In this photo, young Sharon

Owen is seen shaking hand with Syed Amjad Ali, Pakistan's ambassador to the United States. Looking on are Mrs. Amjad Ali, Robert E. Gross, president of

Lockheed, and Capt. Neville Hemsworth, PIA's Super Constellation pilot

Sikorsky S-61N  (Rolf Helbig Collection)

This photo from Rolf's collection shows PIA S-61N helicopter sporting registration mark AP-AOA. PIA was the first airline in the world to operate

scheduled helicopter services. For short-haul operations in East Pakistan's delta region, based on Dacca, PIA set up a network of scheduled helicopter

routes, using three amphibious Sikorsky S-61Ns which were delivered between October 1963 and February 1964. The first revenue flight took place on

November 25, 1963, the first routes being to Khulna, center of the East Pakistan jute industry, and to Faridpur. The value of this new mode of transport lay in the

time saved, the 80-mile journey to Khulna, for example, taking 21 hours by surface travel and just 37 minutes by the helicopter. Faridpur, only 36 miles

from Dacca, derived even greater advantage by the reduction of journey time from 22 hours to 17 minutes! More than 20 points were served as the complete fleet became available. These services had to be switched to fixed wing aircraft in 1967 after two accidents reduced the S-61N fleet from three to one, although

by this time traffic had developed to a more worthwhile level to favor the construction of runways for fixed wing aircraft operations

Air Marshal Malik Nur Khan  (Abbas Ali Collection)

In this photo from 1960, PIA's very first jetliner (a Boeing 707-321 leased from Pan Am) is taking gentle turn under the command of Malik Nur Khan. Nur Khan was PIA's Managing Director from 1959 to 1965. His success in establishing PIA

Page 144: PIA History In Pics

on a firm and profitable financial basis in six years is now a fact of airline history. Under his charismatic and inspirational leadership PIA became one of the leading and respected airlines of the world. Under his tenure PIA became

the first Asian airline to operate jet aircraft. The airline inducted modern Boeing 720B jet in its fleet. PIA started flying to China and flights to Europe via Moscow

were also launched during this period. In 1973 Nur Khan was specially requested by the government of Pakistan to resume control of PIA. During his second term as airline's head, PIA became operator of wide-body DC-10s and Boeing 747s. Popular Green & Gold aircraft livery was introduced plus many

more achievements were made by the airline under Nur Khan's leadership. He kept PIA out of Pakistan's turbulent political arena and returned it to a sound commercial basis. Nur Khan was a dynamic leader and believed in innovation

and new ideas

Air Hostess Momi Durrani  (Photo Courtesy of Indian Aviation Magazine)

In this photo PIA's famous Air Hostess Momi Durrani is seen in airline's 1950s cabin crew uniform. Momi was one of PIA's highly trained, professional and

hard working cabin crew members of 1950s and 1960s. She was tall, fair with film-star looks. PIA had featured Momi in its many advertisements and it is said

that when she smiled, she made others smile. In short period of time she gained immense popularity and achieved status of a bright star and a legend in

PIA's glorious history. Momi was on duty aboard PIA Boeing 720B jetliner which crashed near Cairo Airport on May 20, 1965. Sadly, 114 people, including

Momi, died in this tragic accident

Capt. Abdullah Baig and Capt. Taimur Beg  (Copyright © Aizaz Moin)

This photo is in the collection of Aizaz Moin. In this rare photo you can see PIA pilots who flew airline's brand new Boeing 720-040B (registration AP-AMG) on its record breaking delivery flight from London to Karachi on January 2, 1962. The flight was captained by Capt. Abdullah Baig. With representatives of FAI

(Federation Aeronautique International) on board to monitor the official timings, AP-AMG completed the flight in 6 hours 43 minutes and 55 seconds, the record

which to this day remains unbroken!! This achievement symbolized the fledgling Pakistani airline's fighting spirit and urge to reach the top. This photo was taken soon after the arrival of record breaking flight at Karachi Airport from

London. In the photo you can see PIA's ace pilot Captain Abdullah Baig (left) and his co-pilot Captain Taimur Beg (right). In those days PIA's policy was to

have 2 fully rated captains as pilot and co-pilot on jet flights. In the background you can see the record breaking PIA Boeing 720B (registration AP-AMG). This Boeing 720B jetliner was delivered to PIA on December 21, 1961 at Seattle and

flown by another crew to London from where Captain Abdullah Baig took command and broke the existing world speed record. On the left side of this

photo you can see Aizaz Moin's father Captain Moinuddin Quraishi. Incidentally Capt. Taimur Beg was also Capt. Moinuddin Quraishi's co-pilot when he

suffered a heart attack at Tehran in 1961. Capt. Taimur took command and flew the Boeing 707-321 (registration N723PA) to Karachi. This Boeing 707

(registration N723PA) was on lease from Pan Am and it had made PIA the first Asian airline to fly jetliner. Capt. Moinuddin Quraishi was one of the very first

Pakistani pilots to fly jetliners

After a short period of independence, Pakistan decided in 1951 that it needed a national flag carrier airline; the government of the country accordingly established Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) in this role, and on 25 May ordered three examples of the Lockheed L-1049C Super Constellation four-engined airliner as the new operator's initial equipment. PIA flew its first service with the Super Constellation on 07 June 1954 on the route linking Karachi and Dacca (now Dhaka), which were the main cities of the country's western and eastern halves, of which the later is now Bangladesh. On 1 February 1955 the airline flew its first international service, between Karachi and London via Cairo.

On 11 March 1955 PIA formally took over the assets and routes of another Pakistani operator, Orient Airways, which had in effect been part of PIA since October 1953. The consolidation of the two airlines meant that PIA could enlarge its domestic network with 11 Douglas DC-3 and two Convair CV-240 aircraft, which left the Super Constellation machines wholly free for international services.

Modernization of the fleet used for domestic and regional operations was now a matter of high priority, and in May 1956 the airline placed an order for three examples of the Vickers Viscount 815 four-turboprop airliner, the first of which was accepted in the UK on 2 January 1959 for a debut in revenue earning service on the service linking Karachi and Delhi on 31 January 1959. Further enhancement came in 1961 with debut of the Fokker F-27 Friendship twin-turboprop type, of which the first was received on 3 January 1961. The availability of the F-27 for operation on the routes linking the major Pakistani cities freed the DC-3 fleet for use on new services to the remoter parts of East Pakistan.

PIA was the first Asian airline with pure-jet aircraft, in the form of a Boeing 707-321 machine leased from Pan American World Airways for use from 7 March 1960 on the London service that was extended to New York on 5 May 1961. On 21 December 1961 PIA began to receive its own jet aircraft when it took

delivery of the first of three Boeing 720-040B aircraft, whose availability permitted the operator to enlarge its international route network.

In 1963 PIA called off its New York service, but on 29 April 1964 became the first non-communist airline to operate a service to the Chinese city of Shanghai. A notable feature of PIA's domestic routes in East Pakistan for some time was the helicopter services operated with Sikorsky S-61N's. PIA ordered four examples of the Hawker Siddeley HS.121 Trident 1E to replace Vickers Viscount 815s. First of these four Trident aircraft was accepted on 1 March 1966. The Trident aircraft  were later sold to the Civil Aviation Administration of China in 1970. In 1971 East Pakistan secured its independence as Bangladesh, and PIA ceased operations to that country. The airline's fleet and network were both reduced, but the service to New York was resumed in 1972.

The first wide-body airliner used by PIA was the McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30 three-turbofan type, which the airline first received on 1 March 1974. A pair of Boeing 747-282B four-turbofan aircraft (initially leased from TAP Air Portugal) followed in April 1976, and on 3 March 1980 the airline accepted its first Airbus A300B4-203 two-turbofan type. In 1985 PIA became the first Asian operator of Boeing 737-300 aircraft, a

total of six Boeing 737-300s were ordered to replace ageing Boeing 720B aircraft. PIA received first of its six Airbus A310-308 aircraft on 25 June 1991 from Airbus Industrie.

In the first half of the year 1999, PIA acquired five Boeing 747-367 aircraft (initially leased from Cathay Pacific) for its European and North American destinations. In 2002 PIA signed an agreement with Boeing Company for the biggest aircraft deal in the history of PIA. After a dry spell of 10 years, PIA ordered new aircraft - 8 wide-body aircraft from the Boeing 777 family for its long-haul flights. The airline accepted delivery of its first Boeing 777-240ER aircraft at Boeing Field in Seattle, USA, on January 29, 2004. The A300, A310, Boeing 747 and Boeing 777 are currently the mainstays of PIA's medium- and long-haul operations, with feeder and local services provided by the Boeing 737-300 and Fokker F-27 Friendship.

Life has never been easy for PIA, as the flag carrier of a young and developing nation which has had an eventful history to date, but it is a worthy ambassador for Pakistan and its people. Its services and personnel have helped to make the country more widely known and her people better understood in a large part of the world.
