ThanksLiving: Experiencing the Multitude of God’s Abundance

During the month of August, the Stewardship Committee has planned several opportu-

nities for fellow parishioners to share their thoughts about stewardship. First you will be

able to view brief video clips of parishioners sharing why they give in response to all

that God has given to them. These clips will be shown on a video loop in the Reception

Area, on our website as well as our Facebook page.

Sunday, August 11th -- During both the 8:00 and 10:00 services, there will be panel

discussions moderated by Nelson McDaniel. Serving on the panels and respond-

ing to a series of questions will be Jean Riechenbach, Rick Schulhaus, Jim Gil-

more and Mary Lynn Guidage.

Tuesday, August 13th -- The Vestry and Stewardship Committee will be participat-

ing in Call Night. Parishioners will receive a phone call to share Christ Church up-

dates and extend an invitation to join us for our Annual Giving Campaign Kick-Off

Carnival and Picnic filled with fellowship, fun and food.

We hope you will join us in continuing our journey of sharing the MULTITUDE of God’s ABUNDANCE and his

love for each of us, for Christ Church, and for the world God has called us to love and serve.

“GIG”ing Up for 2019-2020

Are you

looking for a

very reward-

ing program

to be a part

of at Christ

Church?

Growing in

Grace would

love to have

you join us

for this up-

coming

school year! We need volunteers to serve as one-on-

one homework mentors, van drivers, van monitors

and substitutes.

All volunteers receive training, undergo a background

check and complete the Safeguarding God’s Children

Program. Training for all volunteers (new and return-

ing) will be at 5:30 pm Thursday, August 29 in the

GIG Room - Music building upstairs. Please contact

the Director Debbie Fodrie (debbiefodrie@

christchurchnewbern.com /252-675-8358) if you

would like to join Growing in Grace this school year.

IRM Back-to-School Drive Interfaith Refugee Ministry (IRM) is an organization

dedicated to helping refugees rebuild their lives in East-

ern North Carolina. We will be collecting items for their

back-to-school drive from August 4 - 25. Requested

items include book bags and gift cards. A donation site

will be set up in the Reception Area. If you have ques-

tions, please contact Rebecca Liberty at rebeccaliber-

[email protected]

Acolyte Training

The Acolyte ministry is open to all chil-

dren and teens ages 8-18. They are invited

to serve at the altar as Torchbearers and

Crucifers. It is a fun ministry that gives our

youth a chance to learn more about the

history and tradition of the Episcopal Church, while serv-

ing important functions at the altar. A Training & Re-

fresher session for all current and new Acolytes will

be on August 25th, following the 10:00 am service. All

Acolytes will be fitted for robes, current procedures will be

reviewed, and all members will receive their newly revised

Acolyte Customaries (handbooks). For more information,

please contact Bill Dorn at [email protected].

Prayer Vigil for Victims, Families and

Survivors of Gun Violence

Christ Church will host a vigil for victims, families and

survivors of gun violence this Sunday, August 11 from

5:30 - 8:30 pm. Please join us for prayer at the response

of tragedies across the nation. To view the Facebook

event page, go to https://www.facebook.com/

events/409979219870599/

Art Guild Fall Exhibit

Countdown for all artists of Christ Church.

We will be accepting your two-dimensional art works

from 10:00 am - 12 pm on August 29 in the Parish

House. The Fall Exhibit will be up for the months of

September and October.

For more information, contact JoAnn Bredley at

252.635.9707.

Hymn Notes for August 11

“Blessed Assurance,” L 184, is a collaboration be-

tween gospel hymn writers Phoebe Knapp and Fan-

ny Crosby. Knapp, a wealthy insurance man’s wife,

wrote the tune and asked Crosby, a blind hymn writ-

er and worker among the marginalized, what the

tune meant. Crosby wrote this hymn for it. It be-

came part of Dwight Moody’s and Ira Sankey’s re-

vivals in England the United States.

“Jesus Loves Me,” L 218, comes from sisters An-

na and Susan Warner’s novel Say and Seal, published

in Philadelphia in 1860. The novel is peppered with

hymns and poems. In it a sick and dying boy named

Johnny asks his Sunday School teacher, Mr. Linden,

to sing a song, and he sings this. The novel became

a best-seller. Hymn writer William Bradbury read

the words and composed a simple tune. “Jesus

Loves Me” became the best-known children’s hymn

on earth.

Where Do We Give Our Time?

Christ Church shares many financial resources with various

ministries in our community. But we know that often above

and beyond that, many parishioners donate their valuable

time to various ministries. In an attempt to capture a snap-

shot of what that volunteer time might look like, we have

created an online survey at https://tinyurl.com/

CCNBvolunteering. Thank you for your participation.

Barbershop Harmony Group

Those interested in singing with a small Barbershop

Harmony group should contact Doug Sudduth at

RCS Accepting Clothing Donations

RCS is accepting new or gently used clothing dona-

tions (currently summer clothes) for needy children

in Craven County Schools. RCS will be working di-

rectly with Guidance Counselors to get school-aged

children (grades K-12) the clothing they need during

the school year. Please consider donating or pur-

chasing clothing for students. This is a huge blessing

for our students in need.

“Synthesis” Study Materials

Copies of the August and early September

"Synthesis" study materials are available in a marked
