mastering the piano

Mastering the piano is the first series of books to be launched by the Lang Lang Piano Academy, published by Faber Music. Comprising five progressive books, mastering the piano captures Lang Lang’s passion, drive, and extraordinary mastery of the instrument. Each book gives students the chance to learn from this exceptional talent and contains:

• Eight units that develop key aspects of piano technique.

• Specially devised exercises and studies that focus on each technical area.

• A diverse selection of piano repertoire, including Lang Lang’s best-loved works.

• Beautiful arrangements of music from around the world.

• Inspirational commentary and guidance directly from Lang Lang.

• A stunning photo section of the pianist and examples of art that have inspired his playing.

About Lang Lang: Generally regarded as the world’s most successful concert pianist, Lang Lang’s extraordinary talent and charisma has inspired millions to study the piano. In China alone, ‘the Lang Lang effect’ is credited with encouraging over 40 million children to learn how to play the piano. Lang Lang has been included in Time magazine’s annual list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World.

CLASSICS for STUDENTS:

BACH, MOZART & BEETHOVEN By Jane Magrath

CLASSICS FOR STUDENTS

The Bach, Mozart & Beethoven books in three

progressive levels make up the first volumes in the

new Classics for Students series. They are designed

to encourage students to bring new life to the music,

as well as to provide core literature by the most

important Baroque and Classical masters in one book.

The selections are at the centre of the standard

repertoire at these levels, and the book format provides

aids to help connect students with the composer.

Each volume includes spacious editions of the pieces,

inviting composer biographies, and study guides that

focus on three key teaching points for each piece.

The Composer Biographies are divided into two parts. For example, the first section of the biography for Mozart in Book 1 provides a basic overview of his life and works. In the second section, his life as a Child Prodigy and the difficulties related to this are discussed. This section explores how Leopold Mozart booked engagements haphazardly for Wolfgang. He relied on word of mouth for concert promotion. Once, when the family was temporarily stranded in London, the children performed in a tavern to earn enough money to continue travelling.

In Book 2 the same core overview of Mozart’s life is provided in the first half while the second section goes into detail about the Dueling Pianofortes in Mozart’s competition with Clementi. The discussion reviews the various stages of the contest, what they played, and how Mozart and Clementi were asked to sight-read and improvise in the competition.

Polonaise in G Minor

from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena (1725)

BWV Anh. 125

With the Polonaise in G Minor, BWV 125 from the Notebook for Anna Magdalena in Book 2, students may want to listen to a recording and then divide it into practice sections. I have marked suggested practice sections with brackets. I like to help students discover the surprises (sudden stops on crotchet) at the ends of the main motives (two semi-quavers and a quaver). These unpredictable surprise endings appear at the end of the declamatory gesture each time it appears (mm. 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 21, 22). For variety, I usually suggest that the sections beginning at bar 13 and bar 17 be played lighter.

The About the Music section provides three key points for students to consider when studying each piece. For example, for the Mozart Minuet in F Major, K. 15oo in Book 1, the key points provide a concise and clear introduction to the piece.

Students should play the melody with a light sound and slight emphasis on first beat of each bar. I often ask students to circle the two-note slurs throughout (11 in this one-page piece). Writing in small diminuendo signs beneath each slur reminds the student to taper the slurs. Students can also locate the upbeats that seem to pull over the bar line toward downbeats of the next bar. In these examples (marked with arrows), two quavers pull to the crotchet on beat one, helping to bring the music to life.

Minuet in F major, K. 1500~ Strive for a light and graceful character that

emphasises the downbeats slightly~ Listen for the sighs and tapering of the two-note

slurs throughout~ Note that upbeats in phrases pull strongly

over the bar line toward the downbeat of the following measure

Page 7: Piano Perspectives | Winter 2016

PIANO PERSPECTIVES 5

Some of Mozart’s most attractive writing for students appears in the Viennese Sonatinas that were originally composed as Wind Divertimenti, K. 439b for two bass horns and bassoon. They have become standards in the piano repertoire in these arranged versions. Pianists can imagine the different sections of the orchestra playing different phrases, alternating in dialogue. This can expand students’ abilities to “orchestrate” at the keyboard by studying the varying textures (thick and thin) within the examples. The performer also learns to work with thick versus thin textures in voicing and inflecting the phrases. Both Books 2 and 3 contain a Viennese Sonatina.

A Suggested Order of Study is included in each book as a guideline for teachers. While most students will not study every piece in every book, these guides can aid teachers with repertoire selection.

6 PIANO PERSPECTIVES

Geri is a composer and piano teacher who lives in New-

castle NSW and runs “Piano for Schools”, a music school

comprising over 150 students. Geri is also the Director of

LGS (South Pacific), a not for profit organisation which

recycles educational resources from Australia to remote

schools in Fiji.

STARTING OVER

with Geri Rea

With the help of funds raised from annual student concerts, LGS has supplied over 25 schools

with libraries, instruments and teaching resources. But this year has been different. When Tropical Cyclone Winston struck on 20th February, it caused immense damage and destruction to many parts of the Fiji Islands, namely the islands of Taveuni, Koro, and the north coast of Viti Levu. The category 5 cyclone was the largest ever recorded in the Southern Hemisphere. Thousands of families and children are now living and learning under aid shelters

and tents whilst they await the rebuilding of their homes and schools.

At the start of the school year, Piano for Schools and LGS (South Pacific) were preparing 7 pallets of educational resources destined for Taveuni Fiji, when cyclone Winston ripped through the island. Many schools suffered structural damage, and in the worst hit areas hundreds of schools lost their rooves and contents. In March and April, two LGS teams travelled to Fiji with the purpose of assisting with aid relief efforts following the Cyclone.

Page 9: Piano Perspectives | Winter 2016

PIANO PERSPECTIVES 7

We targeted an isolated farming settlement in south Taveuni, who had not received any substantial government or other aid agency assistance due to their remoteness and isolation. This farming settlement was severely affected due to their reliance on crops for their livelihood (coconut, kava and taro) which were all destroyed, and who must now wait up to a year for a full growing season to generate any income.

Having travelled to Fiji many times before this trip, and indeed to many parts of the most affected areas, I was familiar with the people and places which make this remote part of Fiji so special. It was an extremely emotional experience to not only witness the destruction caused to the landscape, but also to hear the amazing tales of survival and see first hand the complete devastation the cyclone caused to many people’s lives. Everyday life in remote Fiji is very tough, and there is an incredible resilience in the Fijian people, but I was acutely aware that the cyclone had cut these communities deep. Many families lost everything, without any ways or means to restart their lives.

STARTING OVER

Through the generous donations of the Newcastle community, urgent food and building materials were purchased for several families whose houses were either partially or completely destroyed. In addition, emergency shelter was provided to those in the most desperate need by way of tents, with a small supply of blankets, bedding, clothing and other household items also provided. Over 400 solar lights were also distributed to households with school age children, as many families have had no access to any lighting since the cyclone.

Financed by Piano for Schools, 9 pallets of aid were shipped to Taveuni on 22nd April, but the work will continue for many months to come. On 23rd April the Fiji Times reported that of the 69,200 students who lost their schools and learning materials, 19,800 have received assistance, leaving a staggering 49,400. We have returned to gather and ship a further ten pallets of books from schools homes and libraries in the next ten weeks.

One of my collections ‘World in Harmony’ was written to raise funds for this project. All proceeds will be invested in the rebuilding and refurbishment of damaged schools in Taveuni and RakiRaki.

Please assist us in our work by purchasing World in Harmony, and receive a copy of The Playground free of charge.

World in Harmony, Geri’s latest book, is a compilation of 12 pieces created to facilitate a voyage of discovery through musical cultures of the world. Students will enjoy the marching rhythm of England’s ‘Changing of the Guard’, escaping to Trinidad’s Carnival Calypso or perhaps the popular New Orleans Show Boat; an opportunity to show early talent at a concert or performance.

The Playground is a collection of 12 pieces for those who are ready to expand their geography of the keyboard – extending the range of notation to an octave, in the setting of a traditional play park, complete with swings, skateboards and a hint of Geri’s English village background. The play park offers a range of styles from swinging blues to ragtime a variety of tempos and keys and encourages creative interpretation with clearly marked performance directions, articulation and dynamics.

ABRSM SYLLABUS

ABRSM’s new Piano syllabus will be launched on 7 July, along with a suite of new supporting publications!

ABRSM NEW PIANO SYLLABUS

PIANO EXAM PIECES – NEWA selection of nine pieces from the ABRSM Piano syllabus at Grades 1 to 7 and 12 pieces at Grade 8, covering lists A, B & C. Meticulously edited, these volumes comprise rich and varied repertoire from which to create an exciting programme for an exam or concert. Each volume also includes helpful footnotes and syllabus information. Available as a book only or a book & CD package.

TEACHING NOTES – NEWWith a fresh new approach for the 2017 & 2018 Piano Syllabus, Teaching

Notes covers invaluable guidance for teachers on all 158 pieces set at Grades 1 to 8. Notes for each piece now contain teaching ideas relating to three areas of learning: musical context, technical challenges, and performance and interpretation.

PIANO PREP TEST – NEWThe Piano Prep Test is an ideal introduction to the exam experience. It encourages the development of good musical and technical foundations before students take graded exams. The test covers many of the elements beginners will be working on at this early stage, including pitch, time, tone, shape, performance and musical perception. The Piano Prep Test book is easy to use and supports players in their exam preparation. For the first time the book includes duets, as well as solo pieces.

The syllabus will also include pieces from the existing Piano Mix and Encore series.

The new syllabus will take effect from January 2017, and there will be no changes to scales or sight-reading requirements, so the current publications will continue to be valid.

Released July 2016. Pre-Order Today!

Hans Bischoff (1852–1889) was a German concert pianist and well-regarded music editor, who continues to be respected for his thorough research, attention to detail, and careful consideration of source materials. These six newly engraved editions of well-known works by J. S. Bach are based on Bischoff’s analysis of manuscripts and secondary sources. Bischoff’s footnotes and prefatory commentary have been preserved, as well as his interpretive suggestions for performance. Also included are explanations of the ornaments used throughout the works, and helpful fingerings.

D instead of B, according to B and E.In B there is an appoggiatura on D without any trill—instead of the trill as it appears here.

In A the mordents are almost always extended. In view of the presentation of the ornaments in autograph B, I consider this to be due to carelessness in engraving. The ties in the Aria are taken from the original. In the opinion of the editor, even the untied notes should be executed legato.

Chapter 2: How Students Learn 45

sUMMary

‚‚ Student learning is facilitated when many learning theories are applied to piano teaching.

‚‚ Many learning theories have developed from three branches of psychology: cognitive psychology, behavioral psychology, and humanist psychology.

‚‚ Most learning theorists, educators, and educational psychologists agree that teaching should be adapted to meet the needs of each unique student.

‚‚ Age, maturity, intelligence, strengths, learning context, temperament, and learning modes can be considered to determine how each student learns best.

‚‚ Each person has a primary mode of learning: visual, aural, or kinesthetic.

‚‚ Visual learners, having good visual perception, learn best with diagrams or other images.

‚‚ Aural learners learn best by hearing.

‚‚ Kinesthetic learners learn best by doing.

‚‚ Although teachers often instruct using their preferred learning mode, students will be more successful when taught in the way they learn best.

‚‚ A student’s weak areas can be improved using teaching strategies based on learning modes other than the student’s dominant learning mode.

‚‚ Teaching strategies can be developed when teachers know the characteristics of different learning modes.

‚‚ Based on the results of temperament assessments, teachers can apply specific teaching strategies to meet individual needs.

projecTs For new Teachers and experienced Teachers

1. Select one educator, learning theorist, or educational psychologist mentioned in this chapter, and write a short paper on his or her work. Based on the individual’s ideas and theories, incorporate at least two teaching strategies in the paper that can be applied to piano teaching.

2. Devise a step-by-step strategy to introduce a music-theory concept (such as how to invert triads) to a visual learner. The introduction should include some type of activity at the keyboard. Develop a strategy for introducing the same concept to an aural learner and another strategy for introducing the same concept to a kinesthetic learner.

3. Determine your personality type by taking the Myers-Briggs test or a similar test. List some ways that your personality type has influenced your own piano study, your piano teaching, or both.
