By Hank YuloffAs an entrepreneur, you are

constantly on the lookout for ways to get your phone to ring. Here are six easy ways to make that happen for you.

1. If you are on social media, adding photos of your cats and kids, be on the lookout for people who are looking for someone named INEEDA. That’s I Need A plumber. Or I Need a Mechanic. Or I Need A Therapist. Be the Referral Queen! When they get together, the only thing they have in common is YOU!

And that is who they will talk about. We constantly look for ways to improve our Rolodex so we can give out referrals. Be known for having a great list.

2. When you receive testimonials, use them to drive your social media. After all, having lots of social proof for your business is very important. Use this as a way to get positive recommendations about your business to a wider audience. Use testimonials to drive OTHER people’s social media – and have them use you to do it. You should also give people testimonials willingly and let them know.

3. Have you ever sent someone a nail? One of our favorite sayings to keep our marketing clients on track is “People do not buy a hammer. They buy a way to pound a nail.”

We created a direct mail piece that visualizes that carries the message “We’d like to be your marketing hammer and make sure you and your clients are together, forever.” You can substitute your industry for marketing and you are ready to go. Remember to include the nail in your envelope.

voice on the phone.5. Another way to make

your website more effective and generate lots more traffic is to create an affiliate program with your website and then be generous to the people who sign up as affiliates their link to your website. For one of our products, an online marketing program, we pay $300 of each sale to an affiliate.

6. Give yourself away. We have donated our services to dozens of non-profits for silent auctions. From those ‘freebies’ and from noticing that you are helping the community that they care about, you will generate far more revenue than the value of the free service.

If you are looking for more ways to generate business go to www.FreeMarketingConsultation.com and get 30 minutes of ideas to get you on a better business path.

Shapiro pointed out the business developments in Calabasas - the new Bob Smith Volvo dealership, the expanded Audi dealership and the new “Calabash Room” at Calabasas Country Club, which will give the city a venue for up to 250 guests, which it currently does not have.

New and improved hotels are coming on board to serve the business community, including

City of Calabasas Supports Business(Continued from page 1)

the new Rondell Oasis off Las Virgenes with 127 rooms - which will also bring over $600,000 in revenue to the city for parks, senior services and more. The Hilton Garden Inn is under construction of 51 more rooms to serve guests and tourists.

The City is not only pro-business, but a strong environmental steward as well, Shapiro pointed out. The recent

Las Virgenes Creek restoration brought new trails along the creek, and the city’s single use plastic ban was followed by Shapiro passing out paper straws to all local restaurants!

Calabasas was the first city in Los Angeles County to approve the Clean Power Alliance, designed to get 50% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030.

“We’re forward thinking for business and our residents,” Shapiro said, having passed a small cell wireless ordinance to improve cell service within city limits, a huge issue, especially during times of emergency such as the Woolsey Fire.

Emergency preparedness is a top priority, he explained. There will be a new Emergency Fair this fall with fire and sheriff representatives specially to deal with business and residents’ concerns after an earthquake.

Shapiro concluded that the City’s strong relationships with Las Virgenes Unified School District and Viewpoint - it gives $1 million a year in money, grants, programs and services to the schools - benefits business by building strong residential values, and bringing more residents into Calabasas to shop and spend.

The City is not only pro-business, but a strong environmental steward as well.

While the flames have long been extinguished, the effects from the devastating Woolsey Fire are still being felt by many Valley residents. The Calabasas Behavioral Health and BrainsWay Deep TMS would like to help by hosting a free event entitled “What is After the Smoke Clears?” on Sunday, June 19, from 3 to 9 pm at Sagebrush Cantina. While the event is free, registration is encouraged before the event fills up! The businesses hosting the event will provide the local community with inspiration, education and entertainment for those still recovering following the Borderline Bar and Grill shooting and the Woolsey and Hill fires.

From 3 to 7 pm, mental health professionals will be on hand to provide valuable workshops and talks geared toward helping those suffering from anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health and Engage Therapy will also have booths at the event to provide useful mental health resources and information for attendees. To learn more about the event, view the workshops that will be on offer, and register your spot, visit afterthesmokeclears.org.

since 1968.By Vahid Khorsand

I have been a member of the Encino Chamber of Commerce since 2006. No matter how many organizations and events I have been a part of, the Encino Chamber’s Teacher of the Year has been my favorite. And that’s a reason why I believe we need to pass Measure EE.

The 25th Annual Teacher of the Year was this past April. Each year the Chamber recognizes local teachers from the west San Fernando Valley. And each year, the Chamber seeks out generous donations from valley businesses to go along with a cash prize for each teacher. The donations mostly make up a cart full of classroom supplies like markers, paper, paper towels and disinfectant wipes. These are things teachers pay for from their own pockets because of the funding crisis in our local schools.

I am a businessman. Specifically, I am an analyst who assesses the value of public companies and forecasts economic trends. I’ve analyzed Measure EE. I am voting yes because it will deliver value for

Guest Editorial

Rebuttal to Rantz & Ravez: Yes on Measure EEevery community within the Los Angeles Unified School District.

There is no dispute that decades of underinvestment have made it so our state, the fifth-largest economy in the world, is

44th in the United States in per-pupil funding. This gap is at the heart of Measure EE. Either we correct this imbalance by adding resources to our neighborhood schools or this imbalance will correct itself through economic decline. This funding status quo is simply unsustainable.

Measure EE funds would be used to lower class sizes and help neighborhood schools retain and attract quality teachers, counselors, nurses, librarians, support staff and principals. It will invest in quality academic

programs in math, science, career education and vocational education. It’s about preparing students for college and a career in a competitive economy.

Measure EE has strict accountability. All Measure EE funds would be deposited into a separate account and used only for voter-approved purposes. Every dollar is for local schools — funds cannot be taken by the state or federal government. A nine-member independent body will oversee Measure EE.

Measure EE is fair and equitable. Homeowners will pay less than one quarter of the costs. How it works is straight forward (something rare in ballot measures): property owners – residential, commercial and industrial – would pay 16 cents per square foot on buildings within Los Angeles Unified boundaries. The tax only applies to buildings already considered taxable by the county and does not apply to land. Measure EE will not affect existing or new rent stabilization ordinances and it includes exemptions for property

“Teacher of the Year”has been my favorite event, and that’s why I believe we need to pass Measure EE.

• So true. A sage told us, “10% of the people make things happen, 80% of the people watch and 10% have no clue what’s happening.”

• Did you hear about the butcher who backed up into his meat grinder and got a little behind in his work?

• My coffee drinking buddy Mary Kathleen says that being over the hill is much better than being under it!

• Didja’ hear about the thief who stole a calendar and got 12 months?

• Max Turrell, a regular contributor to this column, announced a new policy for himself. He’s only going to dread one day at a time. Another Turellism: What’s the difference between anxiety and panic? Anxiety is the first time you can’t do it a second time, and panic is the second time you can’t do it the first time.

By Theda ReichmanIn 1964 Disney’s “Mary

Poppins” received 13 Oscar nominations and took home five Academy Awards. Julie Andrews won for Best Actress and the Sherman Brothers (Robert and Richard) took home the gold for their song “Chim Chim Cher-ee”.

Now 54 years later Mary Poppins has returned to the silver screen in a film appropriately titled “Mary Poppins Returns.” This time Mary Poppins is played by Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda is a lamplighter, not a chimney sweep as Dick Van Dyke was in the first film.

The good news is Dick Van Dyke, now 93, has a delightful cameo as a 91-year-old banker. It’s worth the price of admission to watch him jump on top of a bank desk and do a lively tap dance. It’s the highlight of the movie.

Rob Marshall (“Chicago,” “Into the Woods”) directs and David Magee (“Finding Neverland,” “Life of Pi”) wrote the screenplay based on P.I.

Malibu Bluff is Your

Scandalous Summer Beach Read

With summer right around the corner, there’s no better time to prep the grills, break out the bathing suits and of course, craft your list of beach reads as gluttonous as the cocktails you’ll pair them with. No one is making more of a splash in this department than local screenwriter-turned-author Janna King. As an LA native who grew up near Malibu, the beach is not only her backyard, but the perfect backdrop in her newest novel Malibu Bluff, a not-so-sequel-sequel to her freshman bestseller The Seasonaires, where the intoxication of being an influencer could be deadly...

Inspired by the ever-growing social media surge, King explores the complicated lives of the “seasonaires,” seasonal brand ambassadors for an elite clothing line who live the life of the rich and privileged as long as they document their every moment to social media. But with an unethical boss and their lives constantly on display, isn’t it inevitable that secrets and greed will bubble to the surface? Social media, melodrama and murder combine for a tale as intoxicating as the characters that instigate the mayhem.

As an experienced writer, King has written everything from screenplays to kids’ animation, but the area of novels had remain untouched until the visual aspect of this story was so vivid, she knew she had to put the idea to paper. Fascinated with the idea of worlds looking perfect on the outside, while simultaneously imploding within, King built on the idea that posted perfection might not be so perfect after all... Taking inspiration from shows such as “Pretty Little Liars” and “UnREAL” that unmask the perfection facade, there’s no shortage of scandal for King’s characters who get dazzled by the elite lifestyle only to face the harsh consequences that their naiveté bestows upon themselves. While King’s thrilling follow up Malibu Bluff introduces a new mix

of influencers looking for fame, it’s evident that certain vices are seasonaires’ standards.

With Malibu the playground for the new group of seasonaires, King was heartbroken when the Woolsey Fire recently devastated the city to an unimaginable degree. With the area so close to her heart, as well as being portrayed as its own character in Malibu Bluff, King donated proceeds from her recent book launch at Diesel bookstore to the CA Fire Foundation that aims to protect against wildfires around the state. Reading her latest

(Continued to page 17)

novel, Malibu comes back to life and reminds you of the beauty of the area which is working its way back to being restored.

With a slew of characters you love to hate, The Seasonaires and Malibu Bluff combine the scandalous and seductive elements of every reality show you pretend you don’t watch yet seem to always know the latest drama of. Capturing the zeitgeist of the current social media climate, King’s seductive reads are a perfect escape in which summer is effortlessly personified in paperback.

So pack your beach bag with a copy of The Seasonaires to read surf-side before indulging in King’s newest release Malibu Bluff. Just don’t forget your sunscreen...after all, the only ones who should be in danger of getting burned are the seasonaires...

The Seasonaires and Malibu Bluff from Pegasus Books are available for order through Barnes and Noble and Amazon.

Heartbroken from the Woolsey Fire devastation in Malibu, proceeds from her recent book launch were donated to the CA Fire Foundation.

Cleaning

By Allie PrioreIf you are an avid coffee

drinker chances are that you’ve visited your local coffee shop and seen a sign listing alternative milk options.

You scroll down the list and see the normal culprits: coconut, almond, soy, hemp or cashew, but at the bottom notice one option crossed out.

Upon asking the barista what is crossed off you learn the option is oat milk. Yes, the latest dairy free milk alternative to hit the scene is none other than “milk” derived from oats.

Being a fan of oat milk myself I am pleased that it is gaining popularity. It is in fact in such high demand that when I see it at Whole Foods I always grab two cartons. I kid you not I have gone back later the same day to find the once fully stocked shelf of oat milk to be entirely empty. So what is so great about oat milk you may be wondering? Let me give you a little insight as to why this new milk alternative is taking the country by storm.

Oat milk has many benefits for people and the environment. While it is a lactose free option for those sensitive to dairy, oat milk goes one step further and is an available alternative to those

with nut allergies as well.It is also completely

vegan and high in fiber which makes it a nice alternative. Environmentally, it is much more sustainable than acquiring dairy from a cow or harvesting nuts.

It takes much less water to make oat milk than it does the alternative milk based options. For instance, almonds take six times as much water to grow than oats do. Further, it has a longer shelf life and can be stored unrefrigerated unlike some of its alternative counterparts.

If you are weary about the taste of oat milk I can assure you that it is quite delicious. Using oats gives it a bit of a creamier consistency making it closer in texture to regular milk or cream.

The taste is neutral but has a rich essence to it which is what I think makes it stand out against it alternative milk counterparts. It also blends perfectly with coffee and I find enhances the flavor of the coffee drink itself.

By Sandy RosenholzToday’s senior is living

decades longer than their parents did, benefiting from a higher level of medical care and healthier living practices.

However, depending on your finances and overall health, living well into your golden years can either be a blessing or a curse.

When aging is only about deciding which active senior facility to move into or where to go on your next trip, it is just another life transition. However, for those with a physical illness, disability or dementia, which includes one out of every six women and one out of every ten men who live past the age of 55, living longer can be a curse.

It’s a bigger burden when finances are an issue, lowering the level of care. And, may be further impacted if the federal government doesn’t find a viable solution for Social Security and Medicare.

My mother was one of the lucky ones. She lived a long and wonderful life and collected Social Security for 30 years. My guess is that in 1933 when the program was initiated by Congress, our legislators did not anticipate that the life span would increase to such a degree.

So, how much does it cost to age in Los Angeles?

What you spend on your care depends on your abilities, your finances and the type of care you need or desire. Here is how it all breaks down:

Hourly non-medical companion care (in-home care) costs $25.00/hour and will increase to $33.60/hour by 2029, $45.15/hour by 2039, and $60.68/hour by 2049.

On an annual basis those

numbers are $57,200, $76,608, $103,303.20, and $138.350.40, respectively. For the senior living on Social Security, that’s a fortune!

Assisted living (one bedroom/one person) is less but includes no assistance, costing $48,000

now, $64,512 (2029), $86,688 (2038), and $116,578 (2049).

Adult day care has an annual cost of $18,720 (2019) and will rise to $25,188 (2029), $33,816 (2039) and $45,444 (2049).

For those who require skilled nursing, rehabilitation or a nursing home, the costs will skyrocket. Currently the bill for these services is $88,292 annually. It will rise to $120,000 (2029), $161,268 (2039), and $216,732 (2049).

owners over 65 and certain disability recipients. And it expires in 12 years, when it would come back to voters for renewal.

I was a student at Robert Frost Middle School in Granada Hills in the 1990s when our class sizes were around 25. Today, middle-school classes at LAUSD are crammed with up to 46 students. I know a middle school teacher now who moonlights as an Uber driver to afford being a teacher. Asking our teachers to work second jobs because we refuse to fund education is not a strategy for the long haul. And the long haul for our kids looks tough.

Just this week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon was placing robots in warehouses that would replace at least 2,000 employees. Are we preparing our students today to be employable in the future? Only quality education will prepare our kids for the future. And, Measure EE provides the necessary funding to prepare our kids for the future gig economy.

We all know how essential our schools are to our property values. We know an educated workforce is essential to our economy. Measure EE is a wise investment. And it’s one we need to make now. The sharing economy and the growth of Amazon with the slow death of

retail stores came quick. Now is the time we must prepare the next generations for autonomous vehicles and a new technological change. We can all agree we can’t do that with student to teacher ratios above 30. It is no time to use our kids as bargaining chips. The time to pass Measure EE is now. On June 4th, Vote yes on EE.

cowboys and iconic scenes were all included in the series that represented the past, present and future of Southern California. There was gold trim around the roof line exterior. Black and white stone was used on the interior and exterior. The designs and decor made each immediately identifiable as a Home Saving and Loan location, despite the fact that no two were the same.

The Woodland Hills branch featured a scene depicting the “hills of Woodland Hills and its many trees.”

Prior to the demolition to make way for The Village, Westfield had promised to preserve the artwork. According to Larry Green, Vice President of Development, due to age and materials the mural was in need of repair and renovation. Once the work is complete, the mural is scheduled to be reassembled at the Rose Goldwater Community Center, located at at Westfield Topanga.

The last mural of its kind in the San Fernando Valley adorns the Chase Bank in Encino - a lasting tribute to Ahmanson’s ideals and Sheets’ vision.

REAL ESTATE CALENDAR

Statement from the Association: Measure EE, LAUSD’s proposed property tax, would assess a

tax of 16-cents per square foot on all properties, which is in addition to an existing 12-cent per square foot property tax already levied by the district, and statewide tax increases dedicated to schools passed by voters in 2012 and 2016. LAUSD already spends more than $7.5 billion a year, yet the district is so badly mismanaged that money hasn’t led to any significant improvements in classrooms or test results. Real reforms are needed at the district. However, no reforms are included in Measure EE, just a demand by district bureaucrats and defenders of the failed status quo that taxpayers bail out a school district with a history of red ink, appalling education results, declining enrollment, runaway administrative hiring and exploding retirement and health care costs.

them to Mary’s cousin (Meryl Streep) who can fix anything.

Angela Lansbury also makes a cameo appearance in the park where she sings as she sells her balloons.

As in the first Mary Poppins film, there is music throughout composed by Marc Shaiman which is pleasant enough, like “Trip a Little Light Fantastic.” However these new songs are not as memorable as the Sherman brothers hits like “A Spoonful of Sugar Makes the Medicine Go Down,” “Chim Chim Cher-ee” or “Feed the Birds” which stand the test of time to this day.

A tip of the hat to the first Mary Poppins film is the big production number, not by chimney sweeps this time, but by Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), fellow lamplighters and Mary Poppins.

In the DVD featurette the cast, director and others who worked on the film talk about how “Mary Poppins Returns” was designed which is quite enlightening and informative. There is also a song that wasn’t in the film.

“Mary Poppins Returns” is rated PG for some mild thematic elements and brief action. Running time: 2 hours, 11 minutes.

Travers books “Mary Poppins Comes Back” (1935) and “Mary Poppins Opens the Door” (1943).

This time the Banks children from the original story are grown. Michael Banks (Ben Whishaw), is a widower with three youngsters of his own (Pixie Davies, Nathanael Saleh and Joel Dawson). His sister Jane (Emily Mortimer), is a labor activist who lives nearby.

When Mary Poppins makes her return appearance, floating down from the sky with her umbrella in hand, Michael is facing the loss of his family home due to an ill advised loan he made with the bank where he works. His employer, William Weatherall Wilkins (Colin Firth), while seeming to be concerned, is obviously overjoyed at the prospect of foreclosing on Michael’s home since it will mean more money for the bank.

There are some animated segments as Mary Poppins takes the children inside a porcelain bowl owned by their mother who said it was priceless. Earlier while fighting over the bowl they accidentally drop it so Mary Poppins, ever helpful and resourceful, is going to help them repair it. This eventually takes
