Howdy, Fellow Chemical Engineers!? Bored with your usual desserts for kids? Then try the
recipe below. Aside from being delicious, it will also refresh you with some chemical engi-
neering terms. Enjoy baking!
INGREDIENTS:
1.) 532.35 cm3 gluten
2.) 4.9 cm3 NaHCO3
3.) 4.9 cm3 refined halite
4.) 236.6 cm3 partially hydrogenated tallow triglyceride
5.) 177.45 cm3 crystalline C12H22O11
6.) 177.45 cm3 unrefined C12H22O11
7.) 4.9 cm3 methyl ester of protocatechuic aldehyde
8.) Two calcium carbonate-encapsulated avian albumen-coated protein
9.) 473.2 cm3 theobroma cacao
10.) 236.6 cm3 de-encapsulated legume meats (sieve size # 10)
PROCEDURE
To a 2.0-L jacketed reactor vessel (reactor #1) with an overall heat transfer of about 100 Btu/0F-ft-
hr, add ingredients one to seven with constant agitation.
To reactor #2, add ingredient eight, followed by three equal volumes of the homogeneous mixture
in reactor #1. Additionally, add ingredient nine and ten slowly, with constant agitation. Care must be taken at this point in the reaction to control any temperature rise that may be the result of an
exothermic reaction.
Using a screw extrude attached to a #44 nodulizer, place the mixture piecemeal on a 316ss sheet
(300 x 600 mm).
Heat in a 460K furnace for a period of time that is in agreement with Frank and Johnston’s first
order rate expression (see JACOS, 21, 55). Once the reaction is complete, place the sheet on a 25oC
heat-transfer table, allowing the product to come to thermal equilibrium.

Tips to help save energy:
Use fluorescent bulbs instead of incandescent bulbs
Unplug appliances after use. Some appliances, like TVs still consume 20% of elec-
tricity when in standby mode.
Avoid using electric clothes drier. Use the old-fashioned clothes line and sunshine
instead.
Cover pan/pot while boiling water. This way, water will boil faster.
Thaw frozen food first before cooking.
Never put small pans on large heating elements or big burners.
Choose a ref or aircon with high Energy Efficiency Factor (EEF).
hilippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) SOC-SARGEN Chapter successfully launched the National
Chemical Engineering Week in General Santos City last Sep-
tember 12, 2010. The theme for this year is “Filipino Chemical
Engineers Breaking Boundaries”.
The occasion started with a Thanksgiving Mass at Our
Lady of Peace and Good Voyage Parish wherein the chapter was
the sponsor. It was then followed by a motorcade marking the official start of the week-long celebration of the Chemical Engi-
neering Week. The last stop for the motorcade was in Queen
Tuna Park along Acharon Blvd. wherein the chapter members did their part in helping the environment through their coastal
clean-up drive.
The coastal clean-up drive was in cooperation with the Community Environment and Natural Resources (CENRO).
More than ten (10) sacks of non-biodegradable wastes were col-
lected and turned over to the barangay for proper disposal.
The event ended with a round-table planning and discus-sion on the remaining activities for the week, to wit: Chemical
Engineering Awareness Campaign in different high schools in
General Santos City to promote Chemical Engineering as a course and as a career, and the Culmination activity to be held in
Dolores Farm Resort in Polomolok, South Cotabato. The culmi-
nation activity will include symposia with speakers who are chemical engineers from different career fields, general assem-
bly of members, and anniversary celebration.

With its deep concern for the environment, the
Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers (PIChE) –
SOCSARGEN Chapter held a tree maintenance activity
on February 6, 2010 along National
Highway, General Santos City.
The mentioned activity was led by the
PIChE – SOCSARGEN Chapter
president, Engr. Jeffrey A. Jesswani,
and joined by PIChE members from
the various sectors. It was initiated
not only to inculcate to the commu-
nity the importance of caring for the environment but
also to promote camaraderie and strengthen relationships
among members of the chapter.
The trees were previously planted in collaboration
with the Community Environment
and Natural Resources Office
(CENRO). The trees were wa-
tered, cleared of bushes and
shrubs. The tree guards were also
fixed. Several seedlings of blue
palm trees were planted to replace
those that already withered.
Brett Laudato, a chapter member, said “As
Chemical Engineers, we should be
on the frontline in protecting and
preserving the environment for fu-
ture generations.”
This activity was conducted as part
of the chapter’s commitment of
continuous monitoring and sustain-
ability of activities and projects
within SOCSARGEN.

To Promote Chemical Engineering
Campaign Drive Done in
Different HS
ecause of the dwindling enrollment data for
Chemical Engineering course in different Uni-
versities in Mindanao, an aggressive series of cam-
paign were conducted in different high schools by
PIChE-SOCSARGEN. The target participants were
graduating 4th year stu-
dents and 3rd year stu-
dents. The aim is to
give the students an
idea as to what chemi-
cal engineering is all
about, and to encourage
them to take it as their
future career.
Three (3) schools were already visited to date,
all in SOCSARGEN area. The schools were: San
Lorenzo Ruiz Academy of Polomolok (SLRAP),
Irineo L. Santiago National High School (ISNHS),
and Mindanao State University-Gensan (MSU).
The program for the drive includes a video
presentation about chemical engineering made by the
National PIChE and inspirational messages by fellow
members.
Mrs. Bernadita Totesora, principal of MSU-
Gensan said she was very happy and delighted that
professional organizations like PIChE-SOCSARGEN
had the opportunity to visit their school because it
will inspire their students to study more, to take on
science and engineering courses in college, and to
help in nation-building.

Message f r om t he Pres iden t
As more opportunities open up for chemical engineers in our geographical area, our membership becomes more diverse and sharing among members become more interesting and excit-ing. For every activity that we have, time spent and extra effort is not felt when there is enjoyment and strong bonding among the
members.
One measure of maturity of our organization is indicated by the readiness and willingness of the younger members to sustain and bring the group to higher levels of achievement. With further push, it seems our organization is on the right track in this as-
pect.
Congratulations to our chapter for another year of success-
ful activities. Let’s be proud as chemical engineers!
M es s age f ro m t he Nat ion a l Board o f Di rec to r
Greetings fellow Chemical Engineers!
First of all, I would like to congratulate the Editorial Board of this publication for coming up with the chapter’s very own official newsletter. A newsletter is very helpful in disseminating information and updates to all members wherever they are in the globe, especially with our current infor-mation technology. I hope this maiden issue will serve as an encourage-ment and inspiration to future members to continue the hard work done in
this publication.
Secondly, I would like to congratulate all the members for success-fully launching the National Chemical Engineering Week in General Santos City. The line-up of activities for the event proves that the members are very active and enthusiastic in their goal of promoting the chemical engi-
neering profession.
Third and lastly, I encourage all the members to contribute to nation-building by sharing our resources, skills and talents to the community we belong. As chemical engineers, we all have acquired the appropriate skills to help solve problems in the arena of environmental, social, and cultural aspects of our society. We were trained by our Universities on practical problem-solving skills, thus we can contribute more and help make it
[society] better.
Congratulations to the officers and members of this chapter for the
job very well done!
