TYPICAL WEEKLY SCHEDULE

“After spending last semester at the Y after school program just once a week, my sons asked when they could go back. I told them that we didn't need the program since they could come home. Well, a few days later my 8 year old came and handed me a handful of cash. I asked him what it was for and he said, ‘The Y. I will pay my own way.’”

Because it is preschool, having fun and playing in the water is a large part of the program. We want your child to have fun!

ADDITIONAL INFO

WHAT DOES MY CHILD NEED TO BRING? Children who are not potty-trained need to wear a swim diaper. Long hair needs to be tied-back to help them swim without the distraction of hair in the face. Although not required, we suggest that girls wear a one piece suit so that they do not have to adjust it while swimming.

CAN I WATCH MY CHILD’S LESSON? Yes! We require that parents stay during lessons but ask that parents stay within the seating areas so that the children are not distracted.

WHAT IF WE MISS A CLASS? Refunds and/or make-up classes will not be offered for missed classes.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING BAD WEATHER? The decision to cancel classes due to inclement weather will be made as early as possible. We will notify you of any cancellations as soon as we can.

All sessions have 2 inclement weather make up dates set in case classes are cancelled. However, the YMCA can only guarantee 6 classes per session. Inclement weather make-up days are typically on Fridays, same time.

WHAT IF MY CHILD CANNOT PARTICIPATE? Once a session has begun, if the child is pulled out of the class by the parents/guardians, the YMCA will only issue a credit. No refunds will be issued.

The Pickens County YMCA Swim team is a member of the Carolina YMCA Swim League. The purpose of CYSL competitive swimming is to provide young boys and girls an opportunity to participate in competitive swimming, under conditions that will foster skillful aquatic ability, good fellowship, team association loyalty, a finer appreciation of swimming for its own sake and not just for winning; and sportsmanship of a high type on the part of spectators, as well as swimmers and officials.

Super Squad 1: A developmental team that uses games and toys as a technique to enhance one’s swimming abilities. Super Squad 1 participants must be able to swim a 25 free.

Super Squad 2: A developmental team that uses games and toys as a technique to enhance one’s swimming abilities. Super Squad 2 participants must be able to swim a 50 free and 25 back.

Advanced: The Advanced Team is 50% conditioning and 50% stroke technique. Dry

OPERATION SAVE A LIFE

Since 2009, the Pickens County YMCA has been focusing on reducing the drowning

rate in Pickens County and Northern Anderson County. Our goal has been to

teach as many children as we can to swim, as well as basic water safety.

In 2012, we taught 609 children to swim at the Easley and Pickens YMCA; of which 219 children were taught for free. The

local schools refer need based children in the 2nd & 3rd grade to the Y and we

teach them water safety and swimming basics at no cost to them.

This initiative is funded by the Share the

Spirit Fund. (See page 26)

In this program, your child will learn the basics of Baseball, Basketball and Soccer in a non-competitive environment (two weeks for each sport). Each session will end with a talk to these young athletes about one of the YMCA's core values: Faith, Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility. HEALTHY LIVING Being healthy means more than simply being physically active. It’s about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. The Y is a place where you can work towards that balance by challenging yourself to learn a new skill or hobby, fostering connections with friends through our lifelong learning programs, or bringing your loved ones closer together through our many family-centered activities. At the Y, it’s not about the activity you choose as much as it is about the benefits of living healthier on the inside as well as the outside.

SUPPORTERS $12-$119

FRIENDS $120-$239

CHAMPIONS $240-$999

Each year, the Pickens County YMCA scholarships thousands of dollars to families and children in need in our community. We offer valuable services that many in our community need and want to be a part of such as afterschool and summer camp. As a non-profit, we strive to serve everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. We raise money each year to fund what we call the “Share the Spirit Fund”, which allocates money to those asking for help. All money that is donated to our Y stays in our community and goes directly to those in need. In 2012, our YMCA provided $109,000 in scholarships!

Like many other non-profits, we strive to raise money so that we do not have to turn anyone away that is in need. However, in 2012 we were only able to raise $68,000 through direct donations, United Way and special events.

“Hi my name is Tiffany Moon and through God's strength and grace, I have lost 55lbs. I started my journey to a new me on Aug. 22, 2012. I started by removing most processed foods from my fridge, restocking with fresh organic produce and meats. I also committed myself to going to the Y. I chose classes that would motivate me to push myself, like spin class and Zumba. I would recommend to anyone wanting to see a difference in their weight to try spin class. I love Carla's classes on Monday and Tuesday nights, they always pushed me to my limits.

After just five months, I have shed 55lbs and working on completing my ultimate goal of 100lbs. It’s amazing what you can do when you put your mind, spirit, and body to the challenge. I am very thankful that the Y not only works the body and mind out, but also works with the spirit as well. I found it uplifting each time scripture was read after a spin class, because it helped to encourage me that through Christ's strength, all things were possible. I feel amazing and I know I have just hit the beginning of how great I am going to feel when all the weight is gone.

Thank you for allowing me to share my weight loss journey with others. I hope and pray it will help someone else to continue on their own journey. God bless.”

-Tiffany Moon

“In the summer of 2011, Nicolas Meola (everyone calls him Nicky) attended the YMCA summer camp program at the Powdersville location. He was 4 years old turning 5 that July. Nicky's experience there had a profound impact on the events that were happening in our family. Soon after Nicky began camp, his father passed away after a long battle with lung cancer. When I called his pediatrician, she said it was important for Nicky's routine to stay the same as much as possible. Although I was fearful in sending him back to camp, it was better for him to be away from the funeral arrangements being made in our home and from my initial grief.

Nicky's Uncle intervened in helping Nicky go back to camp. The staff at Powdersville were informed and more than willing to work with Nicky's Uncle in anything that would help Nicky stay on his routine at camp.

The Powdersville staff were phenomenal with Nicky and our family members. They were caring, attentive, willing, understanding and above all, loving. They knew Nicky would have mood swings and difficulties and yet they accepted the challenge without hesitation. They surrounded him with love and helped him have fun. Their willingness and understanding made all the difference in helping a child deal with the process of grief. If not for them, Nicky could have taken a much harder road with losing his Dad.

I commend the staff at Powdersville and whole heartily appreciate their support for my Son, Nicky.”

The Pickens County YMCA is excited to offer a program created by Grace Church that focuses on calling men out of their comfort zones into the vital roles and responsibilities that God designed them for in the body of believers and in their homes. Our desire is that each man (single or married) would know his biblical role and live it out on a daily basis. The teaching is designed to equip men to know and understand their roles and to support them through the process of becoming who God has created and called them to be. This 9 session weekly program is open to everyone in the community!

BOARD OF DIRECTORS The Pickens County YMCA is a community non-profit (501c3) company that serves the local community through membership and programs. The ‘Y’ receives no government funding nor is it governed by the community. The PC YMCA is governed by a local Board of Directors (BOD). The BOD has full authority to execute all decisions regarding policies, financial obligations, supervision of the CEO, and the future happenings of the YMCA. Board Members serve a 3 year term but are eligible to serve again after one year. All board members are full volunteers and receive no compensation or benefits for their service to the YMCA. The Pickens County Y BOD requests all matters regarding the YMCA be brought to the staff and/or CEO. Day-to-day issues, program decisions, facilities and interpretation of policy are the decisions of the CEO. The BOD serve primarily as a policy making body. They also approve the vision of the YMCA, financial debts and supervision of the CEO. Board Members serve the YMCA by offering their ‘4-W’s’.

WORK Serving on the BOD requires work. Whether its manual labor, writing letters, making phone calls, planning events or researching policies. Work must be performed by the members.

WEALTH Financial contributions to the YMCA is a requirement to serve as a Board Member. The amount is not specified. Board Members are also asked to raise funds in the community for the Share the Spirit Fund (pg 26). Soliciting funds is something that all Board Members and staff do in service of the Pickens County YMCA.

WITNESS Sharing with the community, friends, and family about the YMCA and its impact on the community is an important factor of being a great board member.
