ObjectivesObjectives

The objectives of this presentation are:

– Familiarize you with the concept of PIC/NIC Analysis.

– Examine how leaders can use a PIC/NIC Analysis to determine how to get desired behaviors to reoccur.

2

• One way for leaders to help their followers improve their performance is by positively reinforcing those behaviors.

• The leader—or the work itself or co-workers--need to provide appropriate consequences (reinforcers) for desired behavior.

3

Reinforcement and Reinforcement and ConsequencesConsequences

PIC/NIC AnalysisPIC/NIC Analysis

• The extent to which behaviors will reoccur depends on whether– The consequences are positive or

negative (P or N).– The consequences are immediate or

future (I or F).– The consequences are certain or

uncertain (C or U).

NFU ExampleNFU Example

• People continue to smoke cigarettes even though they know cigarettes may be harmful because, even though the consequences may be negative (N), the consequence is future (F) and uncertain (U).

• Some people experience negative consequences and some do not.

• Some people who never smoked develop cancer or other diseases.

Do a PIC/NIC AnalysisDo a PIC/NIC Analysis

• If a leader wants to determine whether or not the consequences (reinforcers) for behaviors are powerful or not, he or she can do a PIC/NIC Analysis, using a chart like the one in this week’s lesson.

• If consequences (reinforcers) are P (Positive), I (Immediate), and C(Certain), they are likely to be the most effective.

9

Do a PIC/NIC AnalysisDo a PIC/NIC Analysis

• If consequences (reinforcers) are:– N (Negative) – F (Future), and – U (Uncertain),

• Then, these are likely to be:– the least effective and

– will probably do little to help the desired behavior to reoccur.
