Students will gain an understanding of context, scope and individual experience through examination and analysis of photographs taken during and after the attacks on the island of Oahu on December 7th, 1941. Students will analyze photographs and make observations to connect the photographs to the historical context in which they were produced.

Develop documentation on the photograph as though it were for a museum’s collection. Materials Required

Printed or digital copies of the pre-selected photographs found in this lesson plan.

Printed copies of included “Photo Catalog Data Sheet”, enough for one worksheet for each photograph.

Projector to display a sample photo. Lesson Plan Warm-up: Ask the question, “What is the purpose of tagging photos online? Is it important to do so?” Discuss answers first in small groups of 2 to 4, then as a class.

Main Activity: Tell the students that they will be acting in the role of a museum curator to document the photographs as though they were being put into the museum’s collection.

In order to maintain records of the past for future generations to study, it is important to be incredibly detailed and thorough in the documentation of photographs or items of historical importance.

o Explain that the students will be analyzing photos from the Dec. 7th 1941 attacks on Oahu. Pre-select photos or allow students to select 2-4 photos for analysis in partners or small groups up to 4.

The photos will be provided with their captions to give the students a hint of what is in their photograph. o As a museum curator, you can get a large amount of information, or only a brief hint about the object or

photograph. o The captions will allow the students to get a brief bit of information about their photos, but they will use

background knowledge, analysis and inference to write a more detailed description of their photographs.

After students have developed their descriptions, they will then create “search tags,” similar to hashtags used in current social media, for each photo. Have students create 5 search tags that best describe the photographs. Conclusion: Once the groups have completed their worksheets, have a class discussion and have each group present one of their photographs and what they discovered. Discuss the importance of what knowing a small amount of the context of the photo does to understanding the description and knowledge about the subject of the photograph. As a class, also discuss the importance of search tags and why having detailed descriptions will help future researchers find the objects they need.

Holes were burned throughout the hull to permit the rescue of some of the men trapped below. Note one of the Oklahoma’s launches in the foreground, the battleship, USS Maryland, is in the background." (Official U.S. Navy Photo from OWI).
