Important Copyright and Photocopy Permission Information There seems to be more demand for ESL services and less money for books! It’s not easy to be an ESL teacher with-out photocopying books. ESL Resources recognizes this and provides ESL teachers with a relatively cheap source of legally reproducible books. For $25 - $50 purchasing teachers get an ESL book with photocopy permission. This is often less than 50 cents per reproducible page. Each book represents hundreds if not thousands of hours of prepara-tion time. Teachers, how much is your time worth? Canadian Resources has the books - now keep us in business by purchasing our books. Photocopies are not for resale.
Purchasing Teacher (One Teacher Permission) A purchasing teacher is granted permission to photocopy this book for use by his/her students. You can be an itiner-ant teacher at several sites or based at one site. Photocopies are not for resale.
Purchasing School (One School/Site Permission) If you need photocopy permission for more than one teacher in your school it can be arranged for a small additional fee. Please contact me at [email protected] for further information.
FAQ Q: Can I make a copy for a teacher so she can photocopy from the photocopy for her students? A: Photocopying from a photocopy of this book is known as a pirate copy and is illegal. Isn’t it better just to pur-chase the book with photocopy permission for less than $50? Q: Can I borrow this book from a resource centre or library then photocopy it? A: No, that would be copyright violation. You only get a photocopy license if you purchase the book or your school has purchased site photocopy permission. Introduction Picture This is a resource for ESL professionals who are teaching LINC (Language Instruction for New-comers to Canada) classes in Canada, although teachers in regular ESL classes may also find the integrated photograph-lesson plan format valuable for their teaching. Teachers and students alike will appreciate that all photographs and lesson plans can be photocopied for use in the classroom. Our goal is to enhance the learning experience of new immigrants by partnering black-and-white photo-graphs with relevant lesson plan activities. Teachers will find the photographs visually-interesting, reflect the full diversity of Canadian multicultural society and portray Canadians engaging in a wide range of everyday activities. Each of the 49 units in Picture This highlights one topic area covered within the LINC curriculum. Lesson plan activities are linked with the Speaking, Listening, Reading & Writing outcomes specified for LINC learners in the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB). Sufficient as a stand-alone teaching unit, individ-ual lesson plan activities and photographs can also be interchanged throughout the book as the instructor meets the needs of learners. Additionally, where the classroom instructor may prefer to utilize existing lesson plans, the photographs are an invaluable additional teaching resource in themselves. Picture This is a stepping stone for ESL professionals seeking a teaching resource that provides lesson planning flexibility, stimulates creative expression, and facilitates student awareness of Canada as a multicultural society. Lesson Format Each unit includes one or more photographs and a choice of Listening, Speaking, and Reading & Writing activities that are based on the unit topic. In some units, a sequence of two, three or four smaller photo-graphs provide the instructor even greater flexibility in lesson planning and delivery. Lesson plan activities are designed for all levels of LINC learners, although the majority of units focus on learners at Levels 1 through 3. Where applicable, activities have been designed to incorporate a variety of learning styles. In addition, lesson plan activities are geared to the needs of adult learners and provide interesting, relevant and topical educational experiences. Each unit follows the same format. Within each unit, the instructors will find: Vocabulary & Expressions, Grammar skills to be covered, Materials required (including web page references, where applicable), a Warm-up Activity, and activities related to the four different skill areas (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing). When you see the symbol “AP” (in the right margin) it indicates that ready-to-go material is available in the index. The number indicates the appendix page number. Also included with Picture This is a 60 track listening CD. The CD is not reproducible. Permission All photographs are copyrighted to the author, except where otherwise noted. Lesson materials and photo-graphs may be photocopied for use by the purchaser in his or her classroom. Wider distribution in the school or elsewhere requires permission of the publisher.
