ADVICE 1: BE CLEAR• You might think some things go without
saying
• But to others they might not.
• There should be no room for vagueness; esp in groups with cultural diversity
ADVICE 2: PICK THE BEST DAY• Make sure you plan your event on a good day:
no other events around “your” day
• Make sure you have nothing planned the day after
• Give yourself at least 90 days before the date
ADVICE 3 : BE CLEAR TO SPEAKERS• About TED-rules
• About when to tweet and when to go public
• About the difference between TED & TEDx
• Herd them
ADVICE 4: COACH YOUR SPEAKERS• Even speakers who give talks on a daily
basis
• Get good coaches
• Preferably two on two
ADVICE 5: BUILD A TEAM• Be honest about the things you’re not so good at
• Be a community
• Have clear job descriptions
• Project managers are important
ADVICE 6: “THE DRESS DRESS REHEARSAL”• Ask your speakers to show what they will be presenting 2 weeks
before the day of the event:
• Some of them might get a wake up call, some might feel reassuredEither way: there’s still time to fix it
ADVICE 7: THE PRICE OF TICKETS / CURATING AUDIENCE• Lots of different opinions on this topic
• Decide what your ideas are on this
• Invite special groups
ADVICE 8: SHORT AND SIMPLE• Make sure the talks are short:
18 mins should not be the goal
• Better have a few speakers than a marathon
ADVICE 9: VALIDATE THE NEED• Ask yourself: Are you taking this on because you want to
put on a conference, or because you know there’s an actual need to be met?
• Ask yourself: is your target audience your target audience?
• If there is a need: build a community. Also with other TEDx
ADVICE 10: LET PEOPLE BREATHE • Your audience needs time to let all those new ideas sink
in
• Give lots of breaks
• Give them good food and nice drinks
• Do not try to squeeze every little bit of value into every second
ADVICE 11: CHOOSE YOUR THEME WISELY• Make it nice and simple
• Not too specific, but also not too vague
• Decide, or at least talk with your team about this
ADVICE : SHRUG• Respect the way someone else handles things. Just
shrug and smile.
• And, as Caitlin Morran said: "You have to give up on the idea of being fabulous. My kind of base position on existence is that you just have to admit you’re a bit of a twat."
• So, you will be a twat and that's OK. Just shrug
