CONGRATULATONS TO THE PARTICANTS OF THE
2014 NORTH AMERICAN INDIGENOUS GAMES This is warm welcome home and congratulations. The Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation are proud of your accomplishments during these games which were held in Regina, Saskatchewan during the week of July 20 to July 26th.
U14 Boys Basketball took the silver medal, U14 Girls Basketball took the silver medal and 2 silver medals were brought home to the community for Athletics.
Starla Lightbody and Cameron Alexander were a part of the under 14 Girls Basketball Team for Ontario. The Girls Team was undefeated! Scoring 64-18 over Northwest Territories, 54-26 over Manitoba and 54-42 over Saskatchewan. Team Ontario including the fans were wild as the reality set in that they were going for Gold. This game was played against British Columbia on Tuesday July 22nd; it was point for point throughout the entire game with a final score of 46-45 for B.C. The loss was excruciating for the team as they worked so hard to finish the game after losing their popular Point Guard to exhaustion in the 3rd period. A special thanks to Coach John Nolan and Assistant Coach, Eileen Jones-White for all your time, effort and friendship. It was truly amazing to witness how these players pulled together as a team after only meeting each other the night before their first game. Well done!
Mason Roesler and Kreed Knox were a part of the under 14 Boys Basketball Team for Ontario. Team Ontario defeated Colorado with a score of 37-33, lost to Alberta with a score of 37-35 and defeated Northwest Territories with a score of 51-28. It was very tense at this point, as “gold” was contingent on the outcome of a game between Colorado and Alberta. Team Ontario needed a win from Colorado but with a score differential of no more than 12 points. To the excitement of Team Ontario, Colorado accomplished a win over Alberta and under the 12 point mark. Team Ontario advanced to the Gold medal competition on Wednesday, July 23rd. This game was played against Manitoba and lost with a score of 59-34. A special thanks to Coach Gerry Benoit and Assistant Coach Randy Roesler for organizing two practices with the team, one in Rama and the other in Pikwakanagan and taking the time and effort with our children. Good job!
Lucas Kohoko was a late entrant in the Athletics competition. Pikwakanagan’s NAIG group were excited to have another participant from their community. Everyone rallied together and thanks to AoPFN, there were enough funds to sponsor and support Lucas’s trip. His parents booked a flight and we all left together on Saturday July 19th. Lucas competed on July 24th and 25th in the 1200 metre event, high jump and 2 relays for which he brought home 2 silver medals. Way to Go Lucas! I can only imagine the excitement Lucas experienced. Lucas had been at the games since Saturday July 19 but didn’t compete until Thursday; throughout this time he became a part of the U14 boys basketball team; they called him their official mascot; he made friends! Finally on Thursday the games were about “him”. Players, Coaches and Chaperones all attended to cheer him on. Lucas stood proudly on the podium to receive his medals! Chi Meegwetch to Coach Erin Baptiste for all your support, guidance and training. Way to Go! The North American Indigenous Games was an experience of a life time. The Opening Ceremonies were held at the Mosaic Stadium, the home of the Saskatchewan Rough Riders of the CFL. It was televised live by APTN and each participating Province and State were paraded into the stadium by traditional dancers; participants carried their representing flags together with community flags; the athletes, coaches and chaperones were dressed in their team colours and came in cheering phrases such as “O. N. T.” repeatedly. It was truly an amazing, thrilling and completely overwhelming experience. In one word “PRIDE”.
The ceremonies show cased traditional dancers, drummers, singers, an Arts Performance, a performance by various artists including Crystal Shawanda and speeches from local dignitaries and the Princess of Treaty #4 who warmly welcomed us. To top the event off the Olympic Torch was lite signally the official start of the games!
By the second day of the games, each Province and State recognized each other by their Team jackets; Ontario supporters were showing up at our games and we were showing up to theirs. The stands were filled with fans and the fans competing with one another in their cheers, noise makers and signs. It was amazing to see our U14 boys come out to cheer the U14 girls on and vice versa!
On our down time, we were able to visit the Cultural Centre where several tee pees were set up and at each tee pee you could learn about story telling; games, drumming, singing, moccasin making, beading, basket weaving etc. There was also food, arts, crafts and clothing that could be purchased in separate tents.

Please visit the site for 2014 NAIG Games and learn more of what we experienced. Overall Ontario placed third in the medal standings, while B.C. was in first place and Saskatchewan came in second place.
A very special thanks to the Chaperones who cared for the athletes during the times they were not playing in an event. This included sharing a dorm with several other athletes and caring for them throughout the night, getting them to their events throughout the day, meal times and generally watching over them daily and tending to their needs. Chaperones were not only responsible for their team but for all of Team Ontario. Chi Meegwetch to Christine Lightbody, Jody Alexander, Tracy McMullin, Jeremy Sutherland and myself, Shelley Wilcox. Special thanks to Kellie Roesler who wasn’t able to attend but supported the team as a parent, fundraiser and treasurer. Great job everyone!
Once again thank you to the Coaches for your dedication and time away from your friends and families to support our children!
Chi Meegwetch to all our supports! Your sponsorship was much appreciated and allowed us to attend this event of a life time: Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation, Makwa Fundraising Committee (KIDS WISH), Anishinabe Kijekwe of Pikwakanagan Dreamcatcher Charitable Foundation, H.J. Searson Limited, Bonnechere Valley Builders Supply Ltd., Royal Canadian Legion – Eganville Branch #353, Mountainview Market, Jacks Smoke Shop, Ben’s Butts, Commanda Smoke Shop, Teresa M. Kohoko and Peggy Dick
The NAIG athletes also held a RIGHT TO PLAY basketball tourney at EDPS to help raise funds for their trip. So a big thank you to their fellow peers and EDPS staff for playing and contributing! Your support and generosity means so much to us!
Thanks to the North American Indigenous Games and Aboriginal Sports and Wellness Council for the experience of a life time.
We the athletes, coaches and chaperones highly encourage our youth to participate in the next NAIG games to be held in 2018.
Congratulations Mason, Kreed, Starla, Cameron and Lucas for bringing home the silver medals and making your community proud! It is anticipated that a celebration in your honour will be planned in the community in the very near future.
Submitted by Shelley Wilcox on behalf of all those involved. “What an experience!”
(Lucas Kohoko, Mason Roesler, Kreed Knox, Starla Lightbody and Cameron Alexander)

The Piwàkanagàn Earthwalkers have made turtle cages to help protect the turtle’s eggs until they are hatched. We are looking for volunteers to temporarily keep an eye on the cages until the eggs have hatched. It would be beneficial to check the cages every other day and make sure they are intact and to see if they have hatched. The cages can be signed out at the Administration Office. CHANGES TO IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR SCHOOL ATTENDANCE
Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, children and adolescents will require proof of immunization against meningococcal disease, pertussis (whooping cough), and varicella (chicken pox) to attend school. (Note: Varicella immunization is only a requirement for children born in 2010 or later.) This is in addition to the existing requirements for proof of immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, and rubella.
The number of required doses of tetanus, diphtheria, poliomyelitis, and mumps vaccines has been updated to align with current clinical guidelines.
All changes to the immunization requirements for school attendance align with Ontario’s existing publicly funded immunization schedule. Children and adolescents who have received all recommended vaccines per the immunization schedule will not require any further immunizations.
These changes are being made to improve the health and safety of Ontario’s schoolchildren. The changes will help protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks in schools.
