A coupon is a piece of paper that can be exchanged for a financial discount when a product is purchased. They are typically used as part of a “sales promotion” strategy.

Asa Griggs Candler (1851-1929), a drugstore owner and maker of patent medicines, purchased the secret formula for Coca Cola in 1887. His aggressive marketing turned the drink into a national institution.

In 1887, as part of a new innovative advertising campaign, Asa introduced a new slip of paper called a coupon whereby consumers could obtain a a “complimentary drink” of Coca Cola.

With Asa Griggs Candler, at the helm, the Coca-Cola Company increased syrup sales by over 4000% between 1890 and 1900

Keep in mind, in the early days of coke production cocainewas one of its’ two primary ingredient! Asa Griggs Candler
