BIRD

Your feathers so soft as you elegantly fl y,Your tail sailing high,Swiftly as one wing is elevated,And the other is dropped,As you turn almost motionless to your left,You glide down to the ground,And there you abruptly stop,Folding your green and blue wings aroundYou,To keep warm.

As I sit at my desk there is much to see. My desk is quite large at sixty-three inches long, and it sits right in front of four windows. On it is one pink lamp, a blue scented candle, a large stack of books and binders from school, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, my phone, a pair of striped socks, and a freshly opened can of Canada Dry ginger ale. My desk is facing south, therefore, I have much sunlight throughout the day. Although the sunlight is great, there is much more to look at outside, which makes me quite distracted. As I look to the second window from the left, under the Cornell Medical College sticker, I see a small patch of the ocean through the trees. Every time I look to the sea, I have an urge to go swimming, but then I realize that it’s 40° out. Also, in front of my window are two large trees that house many squirrels. I hate squirrels; they are annoying and they bother me. In the summer every time I see a squirrel, I tell my dad and we get the BB gun to scare it off. How I miss summer! Spring break is next week, but I wish summer would come just a little faster. Mallory McArdle, Grade 8

EXCERPT FROM THE BIOGRAPHY OF JANET GLOVER

One beautiful sunny day, Janet’s mother and Esther (her sister) were out in their backyard in India. Esther was in a little baby carriage when Janet’s mom ran inside to get something. When she came back outside, baby Esther was gone. Suddenly, Janet’s mother heard a sound coming from the tree above her. In the tree she saw a monkey, and the monkey was cradling the baby! Since Janet’s family was rather rich, they had servants and maids while they were in India. Janet’s mother called for a servant to bring a large blanket and called another servant to bring a pole and a loaf of bread. First, she had one servant stand under the tree and hold the blanket open. Next, she instructed the other servant to put the bread on the end of the pole and reach it up towards the monkey. The monkey saw the food and wanted to grab it, but then realized that he was still holding onto Esther. He looked back and forth between the two things, and then made a choice. He dropped baby Esther and grabbed the loaf of bread. Esther landed safely on the blanket and everything went back to normal.

DAY 5 FRANCE JOURNAL

Today we visited a very important château in the town of Amboise. Thischâteau housed Leonardo Da Vinci on his visits to France. What surprised me was he traveled through the Alps on a mule just to get there! Inside the building was a copy of the Mona Lisa, a room dedicated to his inventions, and a secret tunnel that led to the nearby city. (Sadly, it was closed.) We visited the town of Amboise and got to do some shopping and dining at the Pause Café. However, today was our last day in the country, so it was rather quiet when I returned to my home for the last time.

SUMMER, PLEASE COME BACK

Your warm weatherYour long nightsYour wild partiesAnd the fl ying kites

The ocean smell in my hairThe sun-kissed skin,Which is hard to compare

Beach balls, tennis racquets, bathing suits, and moreAnd we could never forget, Our favorite little store

St. Claire’s ice cream is hard to beatI can’t think of night in the villageWhere we teens don’t meet

I miss the funI miss the tanI miss the timeWhere you have conversations in the sand

Competitive tennis players gather ‘roundThe crowd knows when someone’s servingNot to make a sound

When things heat up All we can do is rememberThat we were lucky to be hereAs a member and contender

The saying is true, “Time fl ies when you‘re having fun.”Especially when we dance our worries awayUnderneath the summer sun

When school plays along, in its routine waysAll I can do for now,Is count down the days

Summer, I trust you’ll be here againBecause all I can do is count on you, in the end.

DAY 4 FRANCE JOURNAL

Today I got the most exercise since my time in France. I literally spent the whole day riding a bike from one château to another. I am told that we biked over 20 kilometers, and I agree because my legs feel as if they are about to fall off. When we were riding on our bikes, I got to talk to many of the other French students and made some good friends other than my host, Jade. While at the châteaux, I was taught some French by Hélian and Benjamin. Some of the French would be very helpful if I were to revisit this beautiful country, but other words helped explain why Americans say, “Excuse my French.” However, the châteaux were amazing, and I liked the château of Sleeping Beauty the most. We had the opportunity to walk through this château, and I was amazed by the craftsmanship of every object in every room. The only room that was “under par” was the dungeon, but I can see why the wealthy wouldn’t want their prisoners to live in anything more than what they needed to survive. Now, I have the evening to relax, recover, and rejuvenate for my last day with my host family. Andrew Bronk, Grade 9

DAY 4 FRANCE JOURNAL

It is the last day in Richelieu. I am very excited to see Paris, but I know I am going to miss my host family. Hugo, Angèle, Océane, and the rest of the family are going to be with me forever. However, I will not miss the evil cat Miraque. She scratched me in the middle of the night and the pain was terrible. I didn’t realize the scratch was bleeding until after I woke Oceane. I will also miss the rest of the French people. They are all so nice, and I wish I could have gotten to know them better. Tomorrow’s goodbyes are going to be hard, but after sad-ness, there comes joy. Cassie Seidel, Grade 9

EXCERPT FROM THE BIOGRAPHY OF FRED SEEMAN

Fred’s family wanted to move to the United States because they weren’t well-to-do in the fi rst place, and it was a rough time to be Jewish and living in Austria. A few times in school, Fred actually got into fi st fi ghts because he was Jewish. For example, one time he was called a dirty Jew at school and he couldn’t stand for it so he punched the person. He described the government as similar to the Fascists. The Nazis were very strong and they wanted to take over. Finally, on March 13, 1938, the Germans marched into Austria. Fred said it was a very scary time, and something that really scared him was when he looked out of his window, he saw men taken by Germans and thrown into buses to be taken away. Fred couldn’t go to school and stayed home all of the time. Beth Fleming, Grade 7

EXCERPT FROM THE BIOGRAPHY OF ARTHUR VOLSTAD

Arthur once went to a doctor to question a giant fl uid-fi lled bubble on his hand. The doctor, pretending to be curious about this bubble, walked over to his bookshelf and told Arthur that he would look the thing up. As he walked back to Arthur, he asked him to put his hand on the table. The doctor then raised the book and smashed it onto Arthur’s hand. Arthur later learned that he had a cyst called a Bible cyst. It got its name from people popping it with the biggest book in the house, which in most cases, was the Bible.

DAY 3 FRANCE JOURNAL

I am so happy with my conversation with my exchange buddy. I speak in French mostly, and Cyprienne translates big words for me. I got to play the Wii yesterday, and I found out Cyprienne is into Zelda, Tekken, Doctor House, and South Park; we even watched NCIS today. We went to the supermarket, and I bought a lot of French food for my mom, along with a French Lego-like toy from a vending machine. I can see how awesome France is, but I wonder what my friends think. An interesting highlight of the day was when I woke up earlier than my host family because I had slept so well on the plane and in their house. It was eight o’clock, and by eight-thirty my friends heard me and decided to get up.

The only problem with having ambitions or ideas is that there’s never enough space to carry them out. In a perfect world, I’d have space for anything that I ever wanted to make or build or just plain have. But we don’t live in a perfect world, so I’m stuck with trying to make space. One spot where there is space to make something is under my bed. I’ve had this master plan to empty out the boxes of dead model locomotives and broken track into one big tub and put that tub into a niche in the closet. Then I’d fi nd a big enough piece of plywood to put at least a simple oval with a siding of HO gauge track with some scenery and buildings, and I’m on my way to having a complete, albeit small, railroad empire at my disposal. There is only one problem: getting track rights and material funds to start operations from the house zoning committee–my dad. He, an avid model train guy himself, is always telling me why something like that won’t work. I’ve told him that he would have track rights on my railway if it happened, but that didn’t matter to him. He says that it’ll just get dusty and covered in magazines or other stray items, but I say there’s a solution to that. I need to draw up plans for a removable skirting board for my bed. You know what? I think it will work.

EXCERPT FROM THE BIOGRAPHY OF MERCEDES VOLDSTAD

Later as time passed, Mercedes attended a very nice grammar school in Brooklyn, New York, called Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH). The school was big enough to separate the boys from the girls, so they would never be together during the school day. Mercedes had to wear a navy blue skirt, a white blouse called a nitty, and a big red tie. All of the different classes would meet in the courtyard before entering the school every morning. One day, Mercedes was in the front of her line fooling around with her friend when her teacher, a nun, saw her. The nun told Mercedes to go to the back of the line and not to move until she was told to. Soon after that, the classes were dismissed into the school, but Mercedes never moved a muscle because she was afraid the nun would get angry with her. When a few minutes passed and Mercedes was still outside waiting in the freezing cold for the nun to dismiss her, she decided to just walk home because she didn’t want to get in trouble for going inside without the nun’s permission. Once she got home, her mom asked her why she was home so early from school. Mercedes told her mother everything that had happened and she was given a bowl of soup and put in bed. After a while, her mother went to see the principal to learn how this incident happened and he said he had no clue. Then he brought in her teacher and the nun apologized for forgetting that Mercedes was outside.
